They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread

Recommended Posts

Just hire Brad that way if he fails, at least we know we're doomed and IU is just the place that coaches come to die. He wouldn't fail though. If IU could just hire a coach that eliminates the year to year worry of us at least making the tournament, that's a good start. There should never be a year where we are worried about THAT!

Offer Brad 10 years, 20 million and work with less NIL if you have to. Let Brad coach 3 and 4 stars that WANT to be at IU and buy all the way in. We'd win more that way anyway imo.

Mgbako is not a five star, but he is also not slow. In a funk and unmotivated? Very. But when he drives into the paint off the wing or corner he's very fast and very explosive. At his size he can be a big problem offensively. Get in the paint and put it up. He was doing that a few times the last couple games and drawing fouls in the process which is always a good thing. So no more threes for Stella until she gets her groove back :P In the meantime hit the wing and cut or hit the corner to cut/sneak into the dunker's spot if Ballo/Reneau is getting collapsed on. Speaking of Reneau, he's one of my personal favorites on the team, I just wish he would actually try on defense. That goes back to motivation, which is the job of the HC to motivate his guys and teach them how to develop and improve skills. I'd have to watch more of Tucker's game to give my personal assessment on him. I admittedly haven't paid as much attention with him as I probably should. It's just disappointing for me as I see such a high ceiling with all of our players but we're stuck in the floor most of the time.

Anyone who thinks that winning at northwestern is a likely outcome has been hitting the bottle hard! They may not beat michigan today but we are likely losing the game. Possibly by alot!

Completely agree. There's likely a generational divide here. My dad remembers Woodson the player, and still supported him as coach last offseason.

Maybe to some extent, but I was at IU for the latter part of Woodson's playing career. I remember him hitting the shot to beat Purdue for the NiT title. Still, I thought it was a terrible hire. I couldn't believe that his name was leaking in the press as a possible candidate for the job.

Be cautious.  Mike Woodson is a survivor.  Seems to always go on these miracle runs at the end of every season that accomplish absolutely nothing except give Quinn and co ammo to keep him around.  I guarantee you Woody is thinking…

Anyone who says I hope we make the tourney is playing with fire. That gives quinn all he needs to bring this clown back.

I want a coaching change but I hated how I felt watching the OSU game. I have decided I am going to root for us to win every game because I never want my team to lose. I have no control on making a coaching change so I am not going to stress about it.

Meanwhile I just see an older guy who accomplished a lot in his day, but hasn't really kept his knowledge up to date, and is unwilling to admit that his time has passed. Not a phenomenon unique to basketball. I've seen this in my line of work, and lots of you probably have too.

When IU moves on, people might look back on his entire career with more positivity. But right now he is actively damaging something really important to a lot of people. (Including him, which makes it sadder)

I loved him as a player and he was a very tough player. To come back from back surgery and lead us to the big ten championship plus the big ten player of the year.

Saying that I can separate his playing career and his coaching career

Butch Carter hit that shot to beat Purdue

Quinn clearly put the word out to the media to stop the insults. They went from Woodson is done to kissing his behind in a day. Quinn still has massive power and why I think year 5 is still possible. Dolson does not control bbal I will never believe otherwise.

I mean that's fine but the more wins the more likely quinn keeps him. His fan boys are out in full force. And more win and they will probably be talking extension and getting the cooks to pony up again

I also saw Woody and Buckner play in person (while at IU) so I compartmentalize their playing and administrative careers into two separate buckets. Both were great players (Woody had a really sweet bank shot), and I still view them that way, but on the other hand both are absolutely terrible in their current roles.

I understand why younger posters, who never saw them play, don’t see it that way.

Kind of how I view Michael Jordan…stupendous player but a horrible owner/administrator. Doesn’t diminish my opinion of him as a player.

Kind of the same thing with Wittman and Zeke. Great players, not good coaches.

Sadly, it’s usually the last thing that they do that leaves the lasting impression. Loved watching them all play, but that was 30-40 years ago.

Kids today have no clue about their playing days… ya gotta know when to walk away.

Furthermore, Q1, sure... but OSU, Nebraska, and Iowa aren't going to end up T30...

Nebraska, Iowa and OSU  was road games so Q1 up to 75 and it’s still a Q1 game.    Definitely disappointing that’s where we are discussing them but for a bubble team their NET right now would be good enough for the bottom of the bubble.   B1G has too many opportunities since they did so well early that basically every game they win moving forward will be a solid resume win.   If IU got to 11-9 they would be a lock to make the tourney just based on what the committee has done in the past.   IU would be compared to teams like Dayton, Pittsburgh, TCU, New Mexico which if they get to 10-10 in the B1G with no Q3 losses will look good.  Again not where this team should be or what I would want but I would be very confident that they would be on the right side of the bubble with a 10-10 record.   If and this is a big if they swept Purdue, beat Michigan at home and add 2 other wins they would be locked in at 10-10
