Feel free to think that

Roughly speaking, do you think it's a 5% chance Stevens comes, or more like a 50-50 chance? In other words, is this more of a theoretical, but still unlikely, possibility? Or is there is a real chance he comes home?

I’m not completely ready to give up on the Brad Stevens possibility until we actually see that he’s not the coach. I just think he’s in a different situation family wise as well as business wise with Boston to make me believe there could still be a chance. Obviously if it doesn’t happen, I wouldn’t be surprised. Otherwise, if it means Dusty is next on the list and he’s just waiting in the wings to make the move to IU (knowing his Michigan contract buyout situation), then I’ll be just as excited either way. Like guys in the know have said, I think Dolsons list is 1. Stevens 2. May….and if Dolson gets his way he shouldn’t have to worry about going past that.

When generational wealth is 100% guaranteed, a guy like Stevens gets to pretty much do exactly what he wants within his chosen industry vis-à-vis role, location, and level of challenge versus comfort.

So there's only one guy who truly knows what his intentions are (and that's if Stevens even knows) and one (his wife) or maybe two or three other people with whom he's shared the factors and leanings toward that decision. In other words, looking to what would make the most sense if you were him is tricky and speculative at best, but multiple options that make sense are possible.

You’re right, of course. Stevens has the sort of flexibility that we all dream of. But since idle speculation is the nature of the beast around these parts, my guess is if David Bonderman ends up securing the Seattle NBA expansion franchise which is inevitably coming, and it’s hard to imagine it would be anyone else, I will be very, very surprised if Stevens isn’t the EVP there with an ownership stake. I think he’s outgrown coaching. But we shall see.

Bonderman died last month, so I don't think he'll be getting an NBA franchise.

Disagree with you on that speculation. If I am Brad Stevens and I'm weighing role, location, and challenge versus comfort, my three top choices, in order of preference would be:

  1. The Boston freakin' Celtics (duh!), including potentially a coaching role some day if Mazzulo gets tired of the grind.
  2. The Indiana Pacers, if and when his preferred role opens.
  3. IU, if he's crazy enough to want to do the college thing again.

As I said, I hope I’m wrong, but there’s zero precedent of someone going from NBA HC to NBA GM (of the Boston Celtics no less) and then back to CBB. It’s such an absurd career arch I just don’t see it. Nobody is going from GM of a championship winning/caliber NBA team to recruiting 17 year olds and trying to convince your existing players to not transfer for an extra 100k voluntarily lol. Who knows though, maybe he misses it?

Kind of like going from Butler HC to the HC of the Boston Celtics?

You left this stud of a coach off your list.

Quinn Buckner... was fired with four years left on his contract with the Dallas Mavericks, who said he couldn't lead or teach.

...Buckner, whose team had a 13-69 record, the worst in the NBA. It was marked by complaints from the team's best players _ rookie Jamal Mashburn, Jim Jackson and Derek Harper, who later was traded to the New York Knicks.

Mavericks owner Donald Carter said Buckner "burned bridges."

Buckner said, "We had a great run. It was fun and I'm sorry it didn't work out. It was a great experience."
