Soon to RETIRE Coach Woodson Thread

To throw a little fuel on the fire ... first, I KNOW NOTHING ... just a IU basketball forum reader that started back in the 90s on the Indy Star page, before Peegs. Just for IU basketball coaching hires since Mike Davis was fired ... just think of how many names were sure things from insider sources yet the man standing at the podium for his introductory press conference was a coach that nobody predicted. Are my old memory cells completely gone or has that happened the majority of the time? I do remember the "IU janitor" said Sampson was the IU hire that no one predicted. LOL

I don’t know….it seems like Archie and Woodson were on people’s lists.  Archie was pretty close to the top of a lot of lists, although not mine.

Scott (with an s) would be a lot cooler if he is putting the heat on QB. Someone needs to. He’s holding the program hostage for his buddy’s personal gain.

Unless that isn't true, could just be rumors. Trying to land Pearl does seem very out of character for how IU has been the last couple decades; and we know they'll stick with Woodson too long.

I understand your concern but I’m not here as an influencer. Some things have been suggested or even alleged that aren’t accurate and I wanted to share what I know. Your skepticism is both understandable and welcome, but that’s why I posted. If you have other questions for me, I’ll do my best to provide answers, including telling you I don’t know. I just wanted to address the Dolson versus Buckner narrative, which I don’t believe is accurate on any way for the reasons I listed, as well as a few others that I can’t confirm bit believe to be true.

If you are close enough to the situation to know the interpersonal relationship between Buckner and Dolson (and I will take you at your word despite this being anonymous internet land), what is your general opinion or knowledge on the narrative that Buckner is protecting Woody, his friend, from getting fired regardless of how bleak next season looks? This has always been a hard one for me being that seemingly Buckner cares/should care about the program first and his friend second. Does he really believe Woody can and should get to rebuild the roster through the portal in year 4? Thanks and welcome!

Sounds like there's some real smoke on McNeeley now.

Had some info shared with me from a Kansas fan whose kid is at KU, and what he's heard:

- If Woodson leaves, or there's a mass exodus of players, he'll definitely ask out of his LOI.

Can't say I'm surprised, but wanted to share in case anyone else has been hearing similar info.

if this holds true, for the better of IU over the long haul I am fine with Liam asking to be released(chance he'd still return assuming we get BP imo).

Do I need to explain the track record of either of those guys? They’re both known to have missed badly with a number of their viewpoints, so I would never consider either to be a sure fire barometer of what is actually happening.

Woody may not survive this, but there are a number of twists and turns before we arrive at that destination. If he goes, it won’t be because Dolson surreptitiously outfoxed Buckner and pulled off a coup.

I'd prefer you try and explain QB's and Dolson's track record, tbh.

But the challenge isn't that hard. You go out and get a proven Power 5 coach like Pearl or Drew or even May.

The ones who still believe in MW need to make an appointment at the Psychology building.

I agree that Dolson would not directly try to undermine anyone.

Do you know if Dolson has sat down with Buckner to talk about a change? On another site it's been reported that QB refuses to even have that conversation.

Those guys talk all the time, but this is delicate stuff and one of the reasons why some people have always shied away from supporting a basketball alumnus as coach. No one ever wanted to go through the process of letting him go, and that’s true for Woody, who is very well liked by a good number of people, including donors. I don’t know if Buckner has refused to have a discussion, but I’m sure he would resist supporting a move to fire him right now.

Absolutely!! You never keep a coach because you are worried about players.  If we lose Liam because of getting rid of Woody..that is fine. BP probably could talk to him anyway and get him to stay.

Bottom line.....

If a change is not made, the brass in charge are not serious about IU basketball ever becoming an relevant player in the landscape of college basketball for the foreseeable future.

That's really all that needs to be said.

Sincerely,

Hiring Mike Woodson didn't already tell us that?

This was not the order of events here. James Blackmon committed to Crean and played for Crean.

It could be as simple as "they don't give a sh!t who knows how they feel."
IMO there is too much societal belief that everything is influenced/rigged. Sure, that happens and is possible. But what's also possible is that people, including reporters, act independently and without 'getting a message' from somewhere.
You're giving journalism in 2024 way too much credit

I agree on the proven P5 part, except May isn't that. I really don't believe IU is in a place to make that kind of gamble
