Fire Coach Woodson Thread

Can’t speak for everyone but in my case I personally didn’t have to wait to see if he could coach talent.  I want and have always wanted a college basketball lifer to be the head coach of the team I’m most invested in.  He wasn’t that but he was the head coach of the team I’m most invested in so I had an open mind on giving a coach that had 0 college head coaching experience when he was giving the job.   Over the last 3 years nothing was done by him or the coaching staff that changed my initial stance.   Little stuff added up that snowballed into bigger stuff that just reinforced my opinion of the situation.   Just my opinion but IU will never win big with him as the head coach just like they were never going to win big with Miller(who I thought would be great).  I don’t need until march to know he isn’t the guy for IUs future.   As far as this team they have a chance to compete for a B1G regular season or even a B1G tourney title however I don’t see them as a legit National Title contender.  B1G as a whole is so far behind the title contender programs.   Again just my opinion but IU will not be a major ncaa title threat contender until they move on from the current coach

You've only had 3 years and 4 games (107 games total) on which to base your opinion. As we've been told with previous coaches, at least 4 years are required before one is allowed to have an opinion that isn't blind support. He's still saddled with Miller players Galloway and Leal. We need to wait until he has his own team. So maybe he needs year 5 since year 4 doesn't count because of that.

Sure his team has underperformed expectations every year and last year was a total bust. As Woodson himself told us during the season, that was the players' fault, there's nothing wrong with the coaching.

It takes a lot of time to turn around a team with a roster size of 13. You can't look at the immediate success that C^3 has had since it's much easier to turn the 80+ roster of a traditional loser around than to turn the IU basketball team into a contender.

(Therapist opens their office door and sticks out their hand)

”It’s a pleasure to meet you. How can I help?”

”I hate my college’s basketball coach.”

(silence)

”Alright, what else can I help with?”

”I HATE MY COLLEGE’S  BASKETBALL COACH”

(Therapist quietly steps back into office and shuts door)

I can't believe you were spying on me.

I thought therapy sessions were private

The Woodson hire was a mistake from day one. He wasn’t a promising up and comer like Miller.  Woodson was supposedly an established product that was part of his supposed appeal. But looking under the hood his resume wasn’t that good. Hence why he wasn’t a HC anymore.

IUPUI wouldn’t have entertained him as a coaching candidate.

The fact he hasn’t shown anything resembling being up to the task isn’t surprising.  Anybody who looked objectively saw this coming when his name first got floated.

Give me a basketball equivalent to Cig. Guy who has won consistently at a lower level. Somebody who has won a conference tourney for gods sake.

Anyone else awaiting Woodson's NBA connections to pay dividends finally? That was one of his main appeals, no? In addition to being an alumni?

Hey his preseason combines have been a smashing success! Lol. The NBA connections were always overhyped. Sure they’re nice to have, but what elite coach doesn’t have “NBA connections” of their own? Woody’s obviously don’t matter enough to recruits to make up for his putrid coaching.

Sounds like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josh_Schertz is your guy...

I don't have anyone in mind to replace Woodson, I just want the best candidate available. Indiana connections are great, but not important. We all have our preferences for style. Don't care.  Identify the best candidate and get him. I complained long and loud about Woodson, because I thought he was just hired as an IU guy. Don't make that mistake again. Find the best guy and hire him. Not easy, but simple.

Best case scenario is Woodson somehow manages to overperform with this team and chooses to retire on a relative high (B1G championship or Sweet 16, etc.) Then avoids the messy break-up.

Exactly. Try selling Woodson's song and dance crap to Curt Cignetti. As you have said, CCC has flipped the roster and changed the culture of the football program and is actually coaching the players and being successful... and we're only TEN GAMES into his tenure - one-tenth of the time Woodson has had...the results speak for themselves.

I am from Missouri -- show me.  That's where I am at.  Neither up, nor down.  Guy has a top 5 roster -- money wise.  Top 10 roster -- talent wise.  No more humps.  Time to put up or shut up.  Time to win those championships we have been promised.

Winner, winner chicken dinner.  So far I’ve seen poor offensive rebounding, low volume of 3’s, letting poor teams hang around and not blowing them out by 30, poor ball movement and passing, and the list goes on and on!  It’s exactly like the concrete analogy, same old sh**, different day!  We should beat Louisville but the way we played last night, I can see us losing to them too.  They are 2-1 and they beat the teams they were supposed to by more than 30.  If we lose to Louisville, this thread will definitely explode!!!

Win or lose this year, he's not the guy for the future.

And if I was to make a very educated guess? Given our lack of incoming freshmen and the very minimal buyout, this is his last year.

Yeah, absolutely everything about this screams last year. And under those circumstances you'd certainly have to assume they will have identified an incredibly short list for next. Like no more than a couple of guys.

I'm gonna start with one of these fine gents:

  • Wes Miller, Cincinnati
  • Josh Schertz, St. Louis
  • Micah Shrewsbury, Notre Dame
  • Bucky McMillan, Samford

If I had to rank these four in order of my preference?

1. Shrews, 2. Bucky ball!, 3. Wes, 4. Schertz.

But there's a case to be made for any of them.

No opinion on the Samford HC, though he’s done incredibly well there. The other 3 are obvious candidates. I’d add Medved, though he’s probably early 50’s and that might be the outer age limit for a guy moving up in class. Among the big name home run-types, you keep reading that Arizona has an NIL problem. Is Lloyd poachable? It’ll be interesting. Can’t imagine it wouldn’t be a quick process.
