Please don't do that because that would only be a negative. Our fans need to stop contacting players and coaches because we t makes us look bad especially if it is negative

....I wasn't encouraging or promoting it, I was just wondering. Good point though.

Okay - I have a mystery candidate to describe:

  • Young - as in 'twenty five years left in his career' young
  • Assistant coach to multiple P5 programs, including to multiple teams and programs that finished their season in the top ten
  • Has been a peer or mentored with/by multiple Hall of Fame coaches and two coaches that currently have Top 15 ranked teams
  • Every job he's been head coach at for more than one year has had multiple 20+ win seasons and NCAA tourney within two years of his hire.
  • Very intense personality - teams are known for defense and three point shooting.
  • Completely clean personal record
  • Currently a complete success at a top seven or eight conference that has multiple ranked teams
  • Will be in demand for top tier jobs after this season

Who is this mystery guy, and are you intrigued/interested?

I agree with that. And I’m willing to bat around absolutely anybody because every great coach in the history of sports has at some point in their career not been viewed as great. The Bob Knight who got the IU job wouldn’t get it now. Beilein’s a HOFer and didn’t get a HM job until he was 51. Underwood’s a top 3 guy in the B1G and didn’t get 1 until he was 50. Bill Belichick straight up failed in Cleveland. Not saying some random dude in the MEAC is the right guy here, almost certainly not, just saying record and name recognition are not close to the sole criterion to find the Guy. That’s what makes this thought exercise fun.

Don't disagree. And in that vein, K really had no business getting the Duke job. In today's world -- he's probably gone after three seasons there.

(I don't know why -- I just find it funny that we're talking about Richie Pitino at IU!)

He wouldn't be at the very top of my list, but I do like him.  :)

If the coach at New Mexico was named anything but Richard Pitino Jr I suspect this board would want IU to take a long, hard look at him. He's 66-26 over the course of the last 2.5 seasons and has a decent chance of being ranked here in the next couple hours.

It's funny that you think it's his name people are opposed to instead of his dismal coaching record, including a stop at a B1G school. Even at NM, he's only won 64% overall and 52% of conference games. So I'm going to have to disagree with you that if he had a different name the board would think differently of him.

Or do you mean if he didn't have the FIU and Minnesota jobs on his resume? Then he'd be in just year 4 as a HC and, while having a decent year, not exactly setting the world on fire. So I don't think we'd be too enamored with him even then.

Nah, he's proven time and time again he can't coach at the P5 level.

I'm not going to hold Pitino Jr's tenure at Minnesota at the ages of 30-38 against him in the sense that he doesn't deserve a P5 job again. He gained valuable experience at a tough place to win and is re-inventing himself down at New Mexico and has done a phenomenal job. He'll be coaching at the P5 level somewhere next year.

Since you defended Woodson for so long, it's not surprising that you think Pitino Jr has done a phenomenal job at NM. He's having a good year but to say he's been phenomenal is quite a stretch.

But compared to Woodson, those numbers do look a bit better, I'll give you that.

Pitino has 3 more wins/3 less losses overall along with 3 games over .500 instead of just 1 in conference. So much better. I'll grant you that Pitino's teams are getting better while Woodson's are getting worse. But still...

He's 10-1 atop the best mid-major conference in the country about to be nationally ranked. 3 of his 4 losses have been by a combined 9 points. New Mexico's Net is 45 and they have a solid 8-2 Q1/Q2 record. He's doing much more than "ok" at New Mexico. The coach he replaced was 52-47 in the 4 years prior.

Again, I'm not going to hold his lone year at FIU...at the age of 29 against him nor his time at Minnesota coaching in his early 30's where he at least had some decent success. Nonsense to think at 42 Pitino Jr has flatlined as a coach. Ridiculous actually.

Surely he's had offers in the 10+ years he's been at NW but he's still there.  Some coaches are very satisfied to stay in one place especially when it's close to home and where the pressure to win and the fish bowl isn't what it would be at IU with us "true fans".  That's not meant as a slam against your post just that not every personality is meant for the bright lights of Bloomington.

I don’t disagree.  I’m sure Collins is content and would only consider a handful of schools if he were to move on.   I think he’d do very well at IU, but that’s just me.

I guess my main concern is that when Steven's isn't hired it will come back as the administration was incompetent. People believe it is going to happen then when it doesn't happen they will blame people even though it wasn't ever a possibility.

What is your problem? Don’t you know the administration has already shown itself to be incompetent without Stevens’s rumors. Why you so worried about it?
