Fire Coach Woodson Thread

Yea, if he is fired end of this season IU has to pay him his remaining contract of $8.4M.  However, we only have to pay $1M/yr until that amount is paid off, which helps.

And Dolson should be able to negotiate that $8.4M down a bit...

No matter what happens the king is walking away a very rich man. The grift worked out perfect for him. Ben johnson goes back to coach his alma mater with actual college experience as an assistant. Gets 1.8 million. Woodson with no college experience claims he is coming back for the love of the school gets 3.2 million. That's a grift. If it was true love he would have taken 1.5 million.

Why?

They should be assistants because they played at IU?

I don’t have anything against Fife but how many programs are knocking on Fife’s door?  I think the answer is equal to the number of other teams that wanted Woody as a head coach which is zero. We have had good football assistants get gobbled up by premier programs but no one has thrown a bag at Fife yet for some reason we should bring him back because…….??? He played at IU ?

Perhaps Hulls and Calbert are great assistants (I have no idea) but those hires should 100% be made by the new coach rather than having assistants imposed on him.If the new hire wants Hulls and/or Calbert I think that would be FANTASTIC  (if they are in fact good assistants) but it should solely be up to the new coach.

PS…..I agree with Jersey in that I feel bad for Hulls cutting his playing career short in order to wade into this mess.

New coach needs to establish his culture. Very difficult to do that with holdovers from previous staff.

Hulls would be easy to retain imo.

I like Walsh as well. He is formidable and really gets limited by the head coach. Landed McNeeley and had us in consideration with many others that we had no business being involved with, due to lack of effort from the head guy.

Agree with your position on Fife. We can do better. He’s too polarizing and that seems like it can and has caused distractions.

Well I'm also guessing Woodson had his boys do a big trash job on fife to make him toxic. He had given lots of stuff to media we were told that was put out after he left. Two sides to every story. Hopefully fife tells his one day. Just saying I hardly doubt it was all fife Woodson probably didn't want to hear anything from him. Plus fife turned his favorite channel and that can't stand. He is the king after all.

Fife has IU and Michigan State on his resume but hasn’t caught on at another coaching job because of the influence of the incredibly well respected Woody? That’s funny.

The bigger question to me is why are hunter and the other assistants still around. Do they develop players? They are supposed to be incredible recruiters yet they have only landed three fall players in three years. Take away money bag recruiting in the spring and they stink at long term recruitments. 2025 was supposed to be a monster fall class and they got nobody. And as bad as Woodson is the one game they coached at minnesota few years ago without Woodson they won in the last second vs a minnesota team who had six healthy scholarship players that night.

I'm not trying to stick up for fife but I'm just saying I'm guessing there is probably alot more to the story.

Season is long and IU can't  fire this lame duck coach fast enough. I'm getting beyond tired listening to his BS post game pressers.  We're going to lose a ton of games so it's only gonna get worse.

Hell -- I'll carry Woody on my shoulders three times around SSAH and lead the cheers for him if that means we'll have a new coach in place by next season.

Please don’t drop him or maybe do?

Just a couple comments about the staff…

1.) The staff that remains has learned that Woodson only listens to Mike Woodson.  They are there to do what he wants. This works for a few elite head coaches, but Woodson misses major stuff and still refuses to listen.

2.) I’ve gotten mixed messages on this, but  I’m not certain Woodson has the ability to fire some of the staff like say, Calbert.  His own assistants, yes.  But outside of that, I think that’s it.  Trying to connect the dots, but I think that’s why the Howard thing was a mess and Dolson offered him another job in the department.

3.) One of Dane Fife’s good friends was just hired at the University of Michigan (where Dane is from) as the head basketball coach and he (to my knowledge) did not offer him an assistant coach position. That should tell us something.

The "I did my job" comment after a 19 win season irritates me just as much.

That's like me telling my parents I did my job with a C+ average on my report card.

And you’re getting paid for A’s, but you’re delivering Fs

Maybe fife is toxic but I was convinced the remaining staff are yes men like you confirmed. Because Woodson never changed a thing ever with them. You would think a shakeup after last year but nothing. He kept everything the same. Woodson knows best is the motto.

Wasn’t the rumor, at least at the time, that Fife was anti-NIL??  Maybe his stance has changed, but I thought that was the rumor at the time.

I think that was part of it and he turned cnn off to fox and and it pissed Woodson off. Who knows but the king reins and with an iron fist. But the real point is I get he wanted his own guys. It was a disaster from the start. It was never ever going to work. If it really was dolsons idea to hire fife and Matta I do question him it means he knew Woodson was not ready for college ball. You would think he would eat up Mattas advice.

If I had to guess, I'd say the remainder of this season will be a linear journey, with a rigid proscribed set of waypoints, leading without exception to a logical and predictable conclusion.

How do you figure?
