Fire Coach Woodson Thread

I would like to think, that if there was any doubt was Dolson's mind that Pearl might not happen, he wouldn't let Dusty get away. So if Dusty does go to OSU, (totally me assuming here) that would mean that either Dolson has 100% confidence in Pearl or Woody will be back.

I would assume so but let's hope it doesn't get that far

The only reason I don't think he is using this as a raise, and I could be way wrong, but he just received a raise from Auburn two years ago and he truly loves Indiana as a state and credits much of his success to his early days at USI and being able to listen/learn from Coach Knight. I think this is his "dream school" and wants to be the one to bring it back to the mountain top.

I wonder if there is some friction between Bruce and the AD.  Auburn hired a new Athletic Director in 2022. You could be right about IU being his dream school. Bruce has been complimentary on IU in a couple of occasions.   However, I would think the only reason a 64-year-old head coach would want to move from one major program to do a rebuild at another would be that he's not happy at Auburn.

Would also be interesting to hear Calbert Cheaney's thoughts.  He's obviously privy to the whole thing and he's not really an outwardly vocal guy.  If Dolson were to go to him and he was voicing concerns, that probably would hold a lot of weight.

Someone (maybe @Chris007) posted earlier that Calbert was a "Woody guy", so not sure how objective he might be, or how willing he might be to talk... not trying to throw Cheaney under the bus, but just saying...

I'm still more upset with Woody's unwillingness to evaluate things correctly (style of play, who we need to recruit, wasting a scholly, believing in certain players/coaches, etc) than I am with the hire itself. I know that won't be a popular opinion.

It's "both" for me... was a bad hire, given Woodson's lack of experience coaching/teaching kids as well as recruiting effort, but the things you listed are true and have made the bad hire an untenable situation.

Chris says Dolson essentially has BP waiting in the wings with DM a backup.. otherwise a pissing contest...
Meanwhile i see some discussing if iu can make the tourney on another site. The tale of two different worlds.

Well, Woody has his excuse for next year.  He's told us again and again that his players are young or were transfers from other schools.  It takes time to learn to play together and learn his system.   Next year with several new players, same thing will happen.  I just want to know how many idiots will think that makes sense.  There's no way next year won't be another crap show.

IU doesn’t even have an opening. May can have a deal in principle before the tourney starts.

Why wait and see if a fluke shot or bad draw knocks you out early if you are May? He’s time is now.

Just like Matta, just like Stevens…nobody is waiting for IU.

.....We can all agree that "something" definitely is going on behind the scenes. That "something", is what everyone is trying to assume, figure out or guess. You better believe coaches and players know or assume "something" as well. It just depends what the "something" is. If the plan IS to 100%, not retain Coach Woodson after this year, Dolson needs to 100% make sure he has his plan A and plan B locked in.

I just don't want to waste valuable time being strung along and plan A falls through and plan B is too late and already hired.

We are stuck with in the current situation and/or trying to hire a plan C or D. We been through this before. It can't happen again. JMO

Imagine bringing Woodson back when you could get pearl .It would be such an iu thing to do.

This is true for 99.99% of coaches. However, Dusty grew up 10 miles from Assembly Hall - when Bob Knight was king.

Knights not king anymore.

Even if Dusty were as sentimental as some on the board imagine, it still wouldn’t matter. His wife, attorney, agent, financial advisor, and any informal advisors won’t be that sentimental.  They’ll make him see how silly it is to turn down real bona fide offers to make him a highly paid P5 coach at great programs is compared to waiting on a make believe offer of “maybe” from IU is. This is doubly true when 1) IU still has a coach and 2) is repeatedly chasing Pearl.

Nobody that cares about him will let him turn down a $20-30mil contract to maybe chase the ghost of Bobby Knight.

Two thoughts:

1) It seems like May is the hot flavor of the month on the coaching carousel. Honest question: how often do those guys work out? My gut says they don't,  more often than not.

2) If key decision makers aren't on board with a coaching change yet, I'm not sure what else they need to see. In which case, every win makes it less likely, IMO.

I am at the point where I will believe it when I see it.  IU admins just have sucked at their jobs to expect something better.  If they don’t move on, I just won’t watch next year.

I keep seeing people (not just you) complain about "the administration" being inept and they have botched this or that or have screwed up everything for all of history.

My problem with that is, that not all of the administration has been involved in a number of the "bad" decisions made over the years. Some were, to be sure. But let's remember Dolson and Whitten were not around for a lot of the previous decisions. Yes, the hiring of Woodson, and subsequent extension/raise was on their watch, but not the entirety of bad decisions can be laid at their feet. So, I don't think we can blame them for everything we might not like.

So what else have Dolson and Whitten been a part of that sets you off?

Seriously I'm done with being a fan if May goes to OSU and we run it back with Woodson.
I can only stomach May to OSU if we end up with someone proven like Oats or Pearl.
If IU brings back Woodson it will be almost impossible to get exited. Once a coach loses most fans it's very hard to win them back. It would be just another gut punch like the last 25 years.

Who says we haven't. I think we have been in contact.

So May wasn't the one you were talking about yesterday being a the backup that was good to go

Yes that is correct. I think May is good to go if we want him. But he doesn't know if IU is going to open up or not, he already knows OSU is open.

There is another possible scenario - farfetched IMO but possible nonetheless.  Dolson has locked up Pearl (or the coach to be named later) and told May the IU job is no longer open thus Dusty starts entertaining serious offers elsewhere.  Or, Dolson knows we're stuck with Woody for another year with no change at all possible and relayed the same message to May that the IU job is no longer open.
