When you have seven portal players, you do not need them all to be top players.

We had terrible roster construction last season. But, I have real hope (and some faith) that the staff will be very particular in who we take via the portal with the intention of much better roster construction. There is an obvious IUBB instance of this happening. Crean was eviscerated for the Vonleh, Stan Robinson year. It was easy to see, he went and got shooters, and two years later we were B1G champs and in the Sweet Sixteen.

*Finally, of note*:

While I understand the need to vent, especially in the 'Fire Mike Woodson' thread, the constant disparagement of there being any staff competence or hope for next year's team is

  • Inaccurate
  • Joyless
  • Repetitive, and
  • Makes many good posters want to avoid the entire forum. It's easy to avoid the 'Fire Mike Woodson' thread, but when the all-encompassing negativity seeps into almost every thread? Yuck.

That seems to be painting with an awfully broad brush. One thread makes the rest of the forum not very good. I think the majority of the fanbase feels like Mike Woodson should be fired.

Just the opposite!

The Fire Mike Woodson thread makes the forum better. It gives everyone a place to vent, rage, and "Mediocre Mike" at will.

It's when many substantive posts in other threads get responses like "it doesn't matter anyway because Mediocre Mike will screw it up" that things get unreadable. Many of us (including me) are guilty of doing that.

When I get non-open-forum messages from some of our very best contributors stating "Yeah, I think I’m gonna split for a couple of days... Life is entirely too short to be as miserable as some of these folks clearly are" I think that people who enjoy the board should remember what makes it enjoyable.

Just my opinion.

Might I suggest you mods fine tune the BTB algo to filter out all of these messages that say the same thing over and over again to a ghost thread titled "Spot on. This x 1000%". It will just be an endless loop of nothing statements about things sucking and people responding with "Spot on" or "This x 1000%".

IMO we don't necessarily need them all to be top 50 guys or coming from a P5 school... plenty of mid-major players who can contribute at this level, especially in the backcourt. I would like a few of the top 50/P5 transfers to land here, because they are important too... just not the end all be all. Problem is, the staff doesn't seem very interested in evaluating talent. So do you trust them to go out there and identify under the radar types who fit their system and will mesh together? I don't, and honestly, that doesn't seem to be their recruiting strategy which as far as I can tell appears to be chasing stars and rankings. Hope it works out.

Edit: removed a reference to the staff not being capable of developing talent. They are with big men certainly, in TJD and Ware.

They don’t need to top 50 players, but they all really do need to be capable of being rotational players on a good team. We have 3 players on the roster right now who fit that bill. Two of them may transfer and/or enter the draft. We need a lot of help.

Why would a single “high end” guard come to IU, let alone 2?  The idea that we’ll have a big ten championship team one year out of the portal is a pipe dream.
Some thing to think he is just going to throw 7 portal guys together and have this great team. They site portal guys having success at other programs. Difference is those guys were fillers who went into stable programs with a core of players that were already together.

I think Reneau, Mgbako, Galloway is a nice core.

If they all come back and that's only three guys. You will need 5 other rotation player who can play at this level. And MR is foul prone so if he is the main big I expect he will foul out alot. Sent from my SM-A146U using Tapatalk

Yes! But with varying degrees of "that can play."

We will need a few that can be go-to, 25+ minute per game players, and a few that can contribute and have a positive impact in a 10-20 mpg role.

Maybe.  MR is still a bit one dimensional.  MM made great improvement.  Galloway is a great glue guy type but he is what he is.  You're still going to need a few true studs out of the portal and there is no reason to come to IU vs another better program.  That's the problem.

I'm trying to be more positive.

Mr and MM both are not very good on defense. They will score but Mr will probably foul out lot unless the nba legend finds another ware in the portal.

Mgbako was horrible on defense ... until he wasn't bad at all.

Agree on MR. Defensive liability. MM showed improvement toward end of the year. and Gallo defensively is a juggernaut in my mind, always guarded best perimeter player - often shut them down. He desperately needs another CG to help carry some of the load. I think Gallo is great but he was asked to be the playmaker, best defender, primary ball handler + more and he still caught all of Woody's **** talk post game. Respect for Gallo.

Offensively, if IU can get a guy who shoots 58% from unguarded 3's and stack him on MR's side of court it reduces the double or leads to open shots. Also, would help if the CG could shoot 47% from catch n shoot 3's to help a driving guard with great vision like Gallo. Of course the player I'm talking about is Javon Small :farting_smiley:

A year of S&C for MM will make him one of the best offensive players in the B1G IMO. He struggled with quickness of other 3's and switching this year. MM will be exciting to watch next year!

That sounds good as long as MR doesn't put his head down and dribble into double and triple teams.  :)
