Both can be true. The staff can not be getting it done and have crappy fans. It's not exclusive to one or the other. But I understand most don't like self reflection and for good reason

This is the tough part of living in the south and being raised in NY.  The reality is the fans aren't to blame at all with IU. The Duke and UNC crowd is a whole lot worse.  I won't mention what but let's just we have have bodyguards near the coaches homes and someone to evaluate the mail for a reason.

As a New Yorker we demand and push for better. Problem in NY is that a lot teams are run by old money so naturally they're incompetent. Even then, turn over is required because even owners feel the heat from time to time.

This is one of those rare instances that IU hires people within a certain circle and shocker they fail time and time again. There's no accountability compared to other regions. No avenue for new ideas.  I think Coach Cig might break the mold though because if he implements the Saban (Parcells tree line) style of running a club, then things might get done.

The fact the fans still show up and largely pack Assembly Hall despite the product on its court over the past 25 years directly contradicts the “crappy fans” angle. As for random ‘fans’ tweeting mean things, Duke or Kentucky fans would have burned down their arenas at this point. IU fans are tame in comparison.

Lol

Fan support is one of the few things this program has consistently had.

Fan support and history are about the only things IU has going for it at this point. Some will say NIL, but that still hasn’t led to elite recruiting. We’ve made 6 NCAA tournaments in the past 15 years. People like to mock Calipari when he loses, but UK has made 7 elite eights during that same span. Our results are closer to the team that blew us out last night than they are to the likes of Duke/UK. Without the fan support. this program would be nothing, honestly. It’s running on fumes as it is with it.

I was wondering how long it'd take for the blame the fans fallback to show up. Staff isn't getting it done? Crappy fans. Staff didn't assemble a good roster? Fans didn't know who to get.

Our fanbase isn't the reason for our failures, but it certainly hasn't helped. I honestly think some recruits get a bit creeped out by the obsession some of our fans display with the basketball program and how they behave on social media.

The problem is the administration keeps hiring guys the fan base never wanted.  I have a long list of family and friends that attended IU and are huge basketball fans.  The only hire after Bobby that any really supported was Sampson.  Most of the fans are already rooting for loses to speed up the firing process before the coach has even coached his first game.  Bring in Beard, Pearl, or Marshall and the fans would all rally behind them.  You're probably right about Drew but he was very doable when we fired Archie imo.  Dusty May be a grand slam.  We just don't know with him.

Whenever Woody is canned the administration needs to do what it hasn't done before...give the fans what they want.

Sampson was not supported by the fans.  He came in being on probation and had a poor history of player grades.

Did my absolute best to not go to bed angry last night and was pretty pleased with myself. Woke up this morning to find one of my cats died during the night. I hate it that our basketball program sucks and I hate it even more when life does stuff like this to me.

I told everyone at the time that Woody would be just as bad as Archie possibly worse.  Trayce saved his @$$ for 2 years.  Now you're starting to see the real Mike Woodson.
Yep even though the writing is on the wall like with archie we get stuck with these guys for four years minimum. Once the hiring mistake is made you are screwed. Tjd totally saved but even with tjd were not that great.

They hired him because they went all in on Stevens, were convinced they had him, and were caught holding their you-know-what when he took a raise at Boston instead.

Woody will be fine as a bridge the gap guy (I know some don’t like when I call him that), and the season isn’t lost yet.

The depressing thing is that we don’t our coach of the future yet. Any teal chance at titles is realistically 3-5 years away minimum. It’s gets annoying sitting around waiting for a future that never comes. And quite frankly, none of that is Woodys fault, imo.
A donor paid big bucks to get rid of archie only to hie woodson. May a well of just waited another year honestly and could have done a real coaching search.

Everyone considered him to be a very good coach.  I knew plenty that had ethical issues with his hiring but everyone thought he was a great coach.  That's really what I was getting at.

He is the only legit coach we hired since knight. Woodson was hired based on one thing only and that certainly was not his coaching record. I see zero culture being built by Woodson the guy we are told is Mr IU.

I think fans like the Hysterics and the paparazzi dude are wise for the program than the pessimistic fans.

Hey, it ain't easy being my age and being an Indiana fan. We didn't get to witness the glory days.

Well, it's no easier for us old guys...  I graduated in 1977... but that doesn't change the view at this point. Having seen "the glory days" make what we've been spoon-fed since the late '90s an embarrassing and disgusting product. Sure, we get a team here or a run there, but over all, Indiana basketball has died a slow, painful death over the past 25 years... and the future is darker than ever unless something changes in a big way.
