We learned they can play against crappy competition ( just like guys like Damezi looked good).

We learned that we can let guys get past us on D but still recover and block their shots.

We learned we can go inside against smaller guys.

ie…I don’t think those games are helpful but…..I’m sure you will disagree :)

It gives guys like Gunn and Banks some confidence that they can actually contribute. When they get back chance to play against the better teams they will be more ready to play

Are we really concerned if Gunn and Banks can play against 108 Indiana State, as an example, as opposed to multiple sub 300 teams?
There are plenty of examples in which having a decent game against terrible competition never translated to playing well against good teams. In any case, I realize others have a different opinion and I’m done trying to defend not playing 3 of the first 12 games against sub 300 teams.

There is a reason that RMK always played 2 holiday tournaments around three holidays.  He knew this time of year is hard for the players to concentrate so they play teams they know they will beat

Wonder if Alabama fans are complaining about playing Jackson State last night.  It seems like our fan base has to find something to complain about.

In my opinion there are three guards/wings that truly get into their man on the defensive end and force turnovers:

  1. Xavier Johnson
  2. Trey Galloway, and
  3. CJ Gunn

Moreover, while Gunn is shooting a low percentage currently, that quick release + form is a jumper is destined to go in a lot.

Defensive intensity, length, distance shooter,  can finish at the rim, and low turnovers - especially for a freshman. And to me he does the one thing that Woody repeatedly says makes it all possible; he plays damn hard and does so consistently.

For me? Bates is a far better player than he was last year, but he doesn't get to the rim and his defensive recognition and intensity really sucks.

Play CJ Gunn.

Or can he? The rim disagrees.

Just kidding. He had some plays where he flew. This just struck me as funny.

Coaches can win when it comes to fans. Everyone wanted us to schedule better teams and we did that with KU and Arizona plus UNC and Xavier. Knowing there was a chance we could lose a couple of them but fans still complain. Others complain about the weak opponents.

Also if we try to schedule teams ranked 100-125 those bteams will probably ask for a return game on their homecourt which we don't want to do.

Jackson St has played Bama, IU, Michigan, TTU, TCU, and Miss St.

After two decades of suckage of course fans are going to complain, and complain about anything and everything. We’re tired.

I just don’t watch the cupcake games. I’m busy and watching uncompetitive games against no name schools just isn’t fun for me.

I’m guessing they would say “wow now our SOS, according to Kenpom, is down to number 12 in the nation” versus IU at 282.

I mean this in a joking way but your “our fan base has to find something to complain about” posts always make me chuckle a bit as they come from a guy that complains about our fan base, lack of motion offense, NIL, “kids today”, players parents texts, discipline, complains about complainers (always funny/ironic), I’m going to stop following college sports because of x,y,z, shot clock, not playing starters enough minutes, kids are softies and impatient, One and Dones, complaining about most things that have changed since 1993 or so, etc etc.

PS: I do enjoy reading your posts

I am fine with the cupcakes! I watched last night and wasn't impressed with iu. However watching them win is still better than watching us get murdered like we did in 3 out of the arguably 5 competitive games we have had so far lol

My only complaint with Tamar is good teams just abuse him on defense. His defense hasn't gotten any better from last year.

No offense but that’s just not true. He’s playing more - and capitalizing with scoring - largely bc his D is better. You think Woodson doesn’t think his D is any better but is playing him more anyway? No way

I could be wrong and I’m taking offense just kidding. But Rutgers, Arizona both went right after him and last night he got pulled by Woodson & got a talking to after giving up a basket
