Hoosierfan2017 Posted March 2, 2022 Posted March 2, 2022 Maryland’s reportedly going after Rick Pitino. They aren’t afraid of the perception, they’re just going after a great coach despite his warts. I wish IU was the same. Instead, we went the direction that we did. I don’t think we’ll ever be the program we want to be unless we drop the holier than thou attitude. IU Scott 1 Quote

One that has put the time in as an assistant and has had success as a power 5 coach. If the young ones didn’t work and the former player doesn’t work what does IU have to lose hiring a grinder. Most Fans will hate it but whatever get a guy that can make something out of nothing. Steve Pikiell Ed Cooley or even Steve Forbes greg McDermott I love Ed Cooley, I'm fine with trying whatever. Because of his age and his improprieties I wouldn't have wanted IU to hire him if we were in the same position (no, not the 69 position Stu references lol), he wouldn't be the right coach for IU, but man he's a great coach. The dude will have them winning and winning soon if he's hired. It's a splash hire, can't last that long, but he's a great bball mind (just as Sampson is, fwiw). Chris007 1 Quote

Goodman is the biggest tool in the toolbox, that we can agree on. And some of the points in the podcast might be old news, but I'd argue that what's more annoying that rehashing old news/beliefs is continuing to watch this program languish in mediocrity when it shouldn't be. And until it's not, asking what's wrong, how do we fix it, and are the right people in place to do it is far less a narrative than it is a continued harsh reality. Quote

There were two answers that could come out of that....1.) "Nope, I'd take the Texas job." or 2.) "I'll take the Indiana job over the Texas job." in which case you'd simply know he's a liar b/c everyone already knew the answer was #1. had Beard said yes then left for Texas, IU is embarrassed, yes, but what would have happened next? we would have ended up with Woodson…. This is true. But we had already kicked the tires on Stevens, and rightfully so. Though we ended up with some egg on our face, any logical person could look at that situation and say, well they had to try at least. It's a swing we had to take. We just missed. So we went and hired Woodson and could market that as tying the fanbase together and all that stuff. Now imagine if we would have missed on Stevens, made a run at Beard and he accepted then about-faced to Texas a week later and THEN we hired Woodson. Sure we ended up in the same spot but a timeline that looks like this: Swing and miss at Stevens, had to do it. Made a run at Beard, big time home run hire that can return the program to glory. Oops, nevermind, he'd rather be at Texas. And then it looks FAAAAARRR more like we had to tuck our tails and just settle for Woodson. Talk about looking like damaged goods as a program. i’m just confused at to why IU wouldn’t touch Beard. I don't think it was that they didn't want to touch him. I'm sure there was an urge to do some heavy petting there. They just knew it wasn't worth it. which asks the question. Do the people internal to IUBB know what needs to be done to be a top program? This is still the million dollar question. Chris007 1 Quote

The title run helped recruiting during those years. It elevated the national perception of the program. And it really took some egregious stuff for the NCAA to punish them. The NCAA punishes teams so infrequently that I think it’s definitely worth the risk. The number of punishments is vastly outweighed by the amount of cheating. I’m not even saying that I wanted Pitino in particular. I think you could get similar results from other top tier coaches who don’t (publicly) have his stench. They wouldn’t attract the NCAA’s attention like he probably will. But it’s frustrating to me to see a conference rival going for it while we are only concerned with looking squeaky clean. I want IU to be a top 5 program in the country like it was when my parents were kids, but I don’t think I’m ever going to see it. We (the IU administration ) won’t do or allow the things that top 5 programs do. JerryYeagley23 1 Quote

Blow up Assembly Hall & Cook and start over with a state-of-the-art arena. Then bring in a top-notch coach. Someone on a different level than Chris Beard. Not sure it is all possible I guess I’m old. But this basketball facilities thing cropped up not long after I graduated some two decades ago. It rings true in football (lots of time spent in film rooms, weight rooms, indoor practice facilities, etc…) and the guys I knew talked about it quite a bit. In basketball I almost never heard a facility discussion and I played with or were friends with or were acquaintances with guys who went everywhere from Div 3 to the B1G and Pac 10. I just can’t see how facilities matter that much when programs like Duke play in shitty band boxes or ancient stadiums like Kansas, Kentucky and UCLA. Beyond that we just got a renovation and Cook Hall. It really reeks of excuse masking on the IU administrations part to say we can’t compete because of facilities. Imo, if Brad Stevens showed up as coach very few would believe we couldn’t compete at the top because of Assembly Hall. Josh 1 Quote

As fans we don’t have much insight into the inner workings of the athletic department, but we leverage what we do have as an proxy for how the department is run. facilities are not a problem in a vacuum, but the fact that our practice facility isn’t anything special, combined with the thousand other micro aggressions (like uniforms/scheduling etc) it paints a picture that that the admin doesn’t know what they are doing or doesn’t care. Is there a specific person to blame? There’s probably a couple.. my question, have things been fixed, are they getting fixed? If no, who needs to be fired to turn it around? asking an insider Quote

More importantly, though, how many times has the NCAA levied a punishment like that? Once? UNC pays its players and sends them to fake classes. What’d the NCAA do? Nothing. Bring great is hard. It’s a year in year out commitment. It’s much easier to be mediocre. Our administration would rather pat itself on the back for “doing things the right way.” It lets them feel good and morally superior. Nothing from our administration signals to me that it wants IU to be an elite program. They fired Archie and then hired a 63 year old with no college experience because he played at IU 40 years ago. They’re not serious about winning big. The program is making plenty of money, so no reason for concern. People hate Goodman because he trolls IU, but IU is an easy target. southernindianahoosier2 1 Quote

On one hand I understand what you are saying, but on the other it's difficult to deny what the kids are saying about their recruitment these days. Duke plays in a small gym, but it's a nice place. Also, there are a lot of bells and whistles around it that make a kid's eyes pop, same with UNC, UK, and KU. They have great swag (on a pod cast earlier this season an IU assistant coached talked about how the swag is a big deal to these kids). We know IU upgraded some facilities in the past 10 - 15 years, but I know some visitors who have said these upgrades took IU out of the 1980s, but they don't compare to what kids experience at other high-level basketball schools. Facilities aren't the end all be all. Those elite schools have great coaches and they win a lot, two of the most important missing elements for IU. That said, IU will continue to lose the wow-factor for some elite talent because IU doesn't bring the same glitz. Chris007 1 Quote

Even so, we recruited guys like Gordon and the ‘12 team that was easily championship caliber. Romeo and TJD and others. Even the worst coaches at IU have recruited well enough. Team building is another matter, though. Tear down AH tomorrow and build a pro stadium and we still won’t Kentucky or UNC. Why the hell would we want to be? Quote
