Class of '66 Old Fart

IUBB vs Maryland - 2/24/22 @ 7:00 on FS1

Recommended Posts

Well if the rest of the team had his on court IQ, we would be Top 15 in the nation. He moves more, he sees more, he sees more passing angles etc. Sure his defense isnt up to par, but our defense isn't our big problem. The other end of the court is our massive problem.

And when he is in the game our offense looks good? He just started playing because of injuries and suspension and we just went on a losing streak. He didn’t seem to help out a whole lot during that stretch. I get it I like the kid and I’m sure he is an astounding as far as character and everything goes. However, he doesn’t do anything to move the needle of IU basketball.

I agree with Kaulie, I'm not saying Race is better than TJD, but we look better as a team and more players get involved when TJD is on the bench.

I'm not near as high on TJD as I used to be for several reasons but it's hard for me to believe we'll be better without him. I'll agree that the offense has looked better at times this season when he is on the bench. I don't see that as an indicator that we'll be better without him, but more so that when he's in there, our offense just relies far too heavily on him to make something happen. I think about it more as....man, TJD would be much better with good guard play. When we get good to great XJ, that takes so much pressure off of TJD. And when XJ is on, you can see he and TJD have pretty solid chemistry. So looking ahead to next year, I don't know much about Hood-Schifino other than him being ranked high. But I can't help but think maybe TJD could be better next year with a much more consistent, high level PG running the show (assuming Hood-Schifino is that).

The offense actually does look good for the small amount of time he's out there. He doesn't need 15 points and 10 assists. You just have to pay attention while he is out there because it's a lot of small things.

If IU beat those 2 and the first game in B1G tourney they should be a lock in my opinion.  That first win in the tournament would be a neutral court win against a quality team (Q1 or Q2).     Not a lot of bubble teams would be able to say that their losses are all Q2a or better losses.  Most are going to have bad losses.    In that case they wouldn’t have a bad loss( judged by the committee not me).   No bad losses is like having an extra Q1 win basically.  Not many bubble teams would have 2 high end wins like IU would have.   If IU wins these next 2 they will be in better position then most would think unless teams around them don’t lose another game which around this time of year won’t happen

I say they win these last 2, then they are in regardless on what they do in the B10 tournament.

I think we tend as fans to look at small cases and try to extrapolate it.  Remember that when Trayce when out with about 9 1/2 minutes left in the first half, we had 20 points.  We scored 10 points in the approximately 10 minutes.

IMO, we have been better than I thought we would be have been with Trayce on the bench, but we are not better when Trayce is out.  Ball movement might be better, but we still have guys missing the same shots.

Well, he's also not scoring.  As someone else posted, right now his best calling card is that he enters the game and doesn't do stupid things.

He played a lot of the last ten minutes of the first half.  Good ball movement.....but we weren't scoring.  Unfortunately they won't award us points for crisp passes.

This is where I am at. Just because his basketball IQ is high doesn’t mean he is necessarily good. There are a lot of talent smart basketball minds out there that weren’t the most talented of players. This is the category I’m placing Leal in. He doesn’t push the needle for me at all and I don’t see it when he is on the court. Archie and Woodson both have not played him huge minutes so they don’t see it either. The minutes Woodson has given him have come from injuries and boneheaded teammates. I hope IU is not putting a bunch of Leal on the floor because then we really wouldn’t be any good.

Agree with everything you posted here, but that doesn't mean Leal doesn't have a role. True-it's almost impossible to put a winning team on the court without multiple impact players. But also true-the minutes he has earned is as a solution to playing boneheaded teammates, at times. And that's a good piece to have.

They generally don't award Mr. Basketball to players who aren't good....

Leal plays smart, and hard. He passed up couple of shots at 3's last night to make a better pass inside, where we scored. He kept Ayala in check when he was on him, and rarely got beat on defense. (I just watched the game again on the DVR)

Will he be GREAT @ IU? Probably not, but I'll bet you he will be better than PS on both ends of the court before he's done. And PS is getting way more minutes than I would like. PS went 1 for 6 last night from 3, and consistently got beat on defense. Leal was 0 for 3 in the OSU game, and  IIRC  1 for 1 last night. His role is not necessary "go shoot 3's". It's (as some others have said) go calm things down and don't do anything stupid like your team mates are right now. (read: Kopp's behind the back pass into 3 defensive guys)

I really want to see Leal & Galloway together next year on the court. All that energy, and good BBall IQ, could go a long way in making us more consistent as a team.

Truth is if Galloway wasn’t hurt, Leal wouldn’t have likely saw the floor yesterday.  Galloway plays smart as well but makes more plays because he’s a better athlete.

Leal is billed as a shooter but the truth is he hasn’t been a shooter in college. At this point he’s a career 30.8% from 3. He hasn’t taken a lot of them, just 52, and it’s hard to come in cold, but he hasn’t shot well. We can get 30.8% from 3 from other guys on the team who offer more in other areas than he does.

Mr. Baskegball certainly has seen its share of good college players, but if it were a guarantee then Kojak Fuller would have made it.

That was my point and also who I was thinking of. Mr. Basketball is based on the HS career, not how they'll do in college or the NBA. Indiana produces a lot of talent so many years Mr. Basketball will have a great college career and have a good shot at the NBA but that is not guaranteed, as you say.

My remark also wasn't a shot at Leal, I like him on the team and hope he'll develop into a consistent role player or more during his career. But his winning Mr. Basketball has nothing to do with him being a good D1 player.

I just don't get these kinds of statements.  I hope we are better next year, but if we are it's not going to be because TJD is gone.

We won the game we all wanted against Purdue.  We don’t win if TJD doesn’t get in foul trouble and plays big minutes.

The offense looks a lot better with TJD on the bench and it’s not hard to explain.  The CMW offense is predicated on 1 in and 4 out.  That’s just his offensive philosophy.

We can debate on wether that’s a TJD problem or a CMW problem but it’s not a good fit.  This is why I keep saying our record will be better next year without him.  It’s not all on TJD but that’s just how I see it.  I also think some of our current players will continue to develop and we have a stud coming in and I’m sure we will kick around the portal.  If we don’t have a better record next year I will have no problem admitting I’m wrong.
