IU isn’t in a position where we can take a chance and hope that an unproven guy or a mid major guy can make it happen at IU. We haven’t beaten Purdue in over five years. We haven’t played in a tournament game since 2016. This spring will be the second consecutive graduating IU class that both didn’t see IU beat Purdue and didn’t watch IU play in the tournament during their 4 years. We’ve made four tournaments in the past 13 years, and 10 tournaments in the past 20 years. We’ve made it past the sweet 16 once in my 26 years on this earth. We make another bad hire and that could very well be the final nail in our blue blood coffin.

Yeah, I’ve been around a minute. I’m aware of the history. Lived a decent chunk of it. When you’re hiring someone you either believe in the criterion you’ve set and your process or you don’t. You either follow it where it takes you or you rationalize something else. If Dolson’s process is to snag the most accomplished guy money can buy, that’s ok with me. If he defines his end product differently and reaches a different result, that’s fine too. You either believe in your process or you don’t. We then judge the results.

Ok. I disagree, but oh well. I hope we don’t have to consider Moser or any other mid major.

Glass didn’t really open up the checkbook for Archie. We gave him pretty much the same salary that we were giving Tom Crean. $3.35 million to Crean’s $3.2 million. I’m talking a $6-7 million contract for this coach. That’d be a substantial increase for pretty much all our targets.

I understand about the $6-7 Mil, but it's still the case that, at the time, Archie's starting salary at IU was 8th highest in the country.

And while bumping it up to $6-7 mil would in theory get IU closer to an elite coach, such a bump won't matter if no "elite" coach is interested. Most of the names I've seen associated with the opening, frankly, aren't ones I'd regard as either elite or worth $6-7 Mil.

I know one thing, Porter Moser would get IU to play hard for 40 minutes. Most enjoyable game I've seen all year, they are so well coached.

To me, that is Indiana basketball!

Moser kinda sorta somewhat reminds me of Shaka Smart.  Smart became the hottest "thing" his last couple of years at VCU.  Hired by Texas but until this season really hasn't done anything spectacular.   He had a .744 winning % at VCU in 6 seasons and is .559 in 6 seasons at Texas.

The only thing I will say to argue this is...Shaka had a gimmick defense at VCU and Moser plays the most solid, fundamental basketball I have seen in a long time.  Both sides of the floor!

I gotta say, I don't understand how Moser hasn't made more tournaments.   The team i saw today was incredibly well coached and executed their gameplan to perfection. A team doesn't just fall into playing that well. I mean,  it really could be that post Rick Majerus Moser is just a different beast.   Watching Arkansas and Texas tech right now, I'm quite unimpressed with the play on the court

The conferences, Horizon and Missouri Valley don’t generally get at large bids.  So he’s subject to the crapshoot of a conference tournament.

Moser is from the  Rick Majerus coaching tree.  It shows

Imagine that. Learned at the feet of an excellent coach and became one himself.

Kinda like Darian Devries.

YOU DONT HAVE TO BE A HEADLINE NAME TO BE REALLY GOOD.

Wait,  Majerus only went to 1 final four. How good could he have really been?

True, everyone gets their start somewhere.

However, the odds of success at the highest level are best when candidates have already had success at that level.

The mid major candidate du jour doesn’t even know what obstacles lie in front of them.

Maybe we get a winner from mid major du jour, but why gamble if we are willing to pay for a proven winner.

A segment on a crappy ESPN show is about all this is worth. 5 days ago and 99% of IU fans couldn’t have picked this guy out of a cocktail party in their own living room.

I would be disappointed in Dolson if he goes for the flavor of the month.

most IU fans will remember Moser from his last tournament run, which has some parallels to Archie's Elite Eight run (FWIW)

oh well...maybe it's a smokescreen, maybe all the "bigger" names turned Dolson down--I can''t imagine Scott would need much help from donors to overcome Moser's buyout (if he even has one)

if it is Moser, I hope to God he hires at least one REALLY good recruiter, since they'd be going after a different level of recruits than at Loyola.

He’s proven he can adapt and change to become a strong coach, unlike what we’ve experienced with Crean and Archie. True he might be the flavor of the week with another strong run in the tournament but I’d prefer him over many of the IU guys with no college head coaching experience.
