Thad Matta, you're the next man up and I think that would be a good hire if he's healthy

The board knows my stance on Matta. Extremely risky, too much to risk. We're looking for a new coach in 2025 in my opinion.

Didn't TTU finish behind UT this year? The optics of paying $20 million in buyouts in that scenario isn't great. I get it was only one year, but that would still be a very aggressive move.

Just look at Shaka's NCAA success at Texas vs Beard at Texas Tech and tell me why Texas isn't at least contemplating it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't this based essentially on his lack of recruiting from his past 4 years sitting out for his health? I know you would have been ok with Stevens, he hasn't recruited in 8 seasons now. I'd rather we go after Beard and have him say no first, but Matta as a 5th option or whatever it would be, wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

Why 2025...he's only 53?  Look at his Wikipedia and tell me he isn't a winner.  His winning percentage is .740 and that includes his last 2 years where he could barely stand or walk.

Rumor is he is healthy now after his last back surgery. I will take a coach with Indiana ties with a .740 winning % all day long!

Depends on his health. Which is supposedly better than it was made to be when OSU parted ways. He would possibly be the coach longer than 5 years because he is only 53 but there is risk.

His lack of recruiting and coaching in general. Stevens has been out the game for eight years in college, but lets be honest. All he has to say is "I coached Tatum, Brown, Irving, Hayward, Horford, etc".

His lack of recruiting is very concerning. Yes he can always hire people but has he kept up with his coaching networking? A lack of coaching is even more concerning. The game continues to change in styles. The B1G is different when he last coached. Lastly, his O$U teams were on a downwards trend in his last couple years.

Not for nothing, but Anthony Leal would be a freaking superstar playing for Porter Moser.

Imagine Jordan Geronimo unleashed on both ends in Moses’s system

I know Texas has boatloads of athletic department revenue etc but they just fired Tom Herman who they now owe $15 million and his staff another $9million. That doesn’t include the money for the Sark deal either so I have a hard time believing they’re going to pay 20 something million just to buyout Beard on top of the contract they’d have to offer.

This is Indiana. We fired Crean because he couldn't get us a to a final four or banner. We fired Archie because he couldn't win. Matta hasn't coached a big time game since I was a freshman in college.

We're looking for a coach in 2025 because he won't lead us to a final four or banner. If we're going to hire a coach to just win and get us to a first round each year then.. wow. The media is indeed right. Indiana is not Indiana.

I know you have your reservations about Matta but I fully expect whoever we pick to be a worse hire than Matta would’ve been.

To me you go all out on our dream coaches then go down a tier:

Tier 1: Brad Stevens, Billy Donovan, Jay Wright, Tony Bennett, Mark Few, Bill Self

Tier 2: Chris Beard, Nate Oates, Scott Drew, Eric Musselman, Mike White, Andy Enfield, Mick Cronin, Mike Boynton, Porter Moser, Chris Mack

Tier 3: Thad Matta, John Beilein, Rick Pitino, Steve Alford, Steve Lavin, Mark Pope, Dane Fife, Calbert Cheaney, Scott Skikes, Mike Woodson

My proposal is that if you can’t get anything from Tier 2, we have a year where we have an interim manager. This is a hire that we should be comfortable with.

Steve Lavin, I was shocked over some of his success.....

226-133 (.630), 4 sweet 16's and an Elite 8, also thought he was older, but only 56.

Give it up Treesh.

Do you really think waiting one year, five years, or 25 years will all of the sudden make Brad Stevens or Billy Donovan want to coach at IU? If you do, tell me what will be different next March.

We need a coach...now.

Ask me a year from now when Tatum is not on the Celtics!
