General Coach Candidate News

Maybe not day 1 but once they see how he can coach and the NIL that IU can offer I don't think he will have any issue brining in top recruits.  Every coach has done it before.  How do you think Ballo, Rice, and Tucker wound up at IU?  It wasn't because of Woody's coaching.  They went to the highest bidder.

I think in this day to be successful you still have to look at fit and character.  Essentially normal basketball recruiting.  That's a big part to me of what Woodson lacked.  They still need to listen and a work ethic.

I do think a name that we aren't talking about is Alan Huss at High Point.....Now 57-14 at High Point, from Decatur Illinois, he's only 46 years old, played with Doug McDermott at Creighton 1997-2001 then worked under Dana Altman 6 years at Creighton.

Sorry, he played with Kyle Korver......not the younger McDermott.  My bad on that one.

IF IU is truly at the McCollum/Brownell level, I still think Chris Collins would be the better gamble.  Collins learned under Coach K at duke and has risen Northwestern from obscurity to respectable; which is really saying something give it is . . . well, Northwestern basketball.  When looking back at the most successful teams Collins has built there he certainly has not had the benefit of top recruits.  His best teams were exactly that, TEAMS that share the ball and run the offense Chris asks of them.  I think Chris is a very good X and O guy and given the NIL at IU I think he could do very well and perhaps even surprisingly well.
I agree I'd take collins over either if them.

You don’t need 5 stars to win ball games.

Painter has proven that.

And there have been countless people over the years who have shown that the schools with the top recruiting classes don't necessarily win the national championship. There is a middle ground between getting a few elite recruits and finding guys who are glue guys in your system.

Most of the coaches who have been under coach K hasn't done that well as a HC

Ben McCollum would take his 3 stars and beat your 5 stars.

More fun stuff from Mike Wiemuth-

While IU fans wait for news, I thought it would be useful to review when other incumbent coaches were hired at their current schools. Remember that the “valid” leaks on the eventual hire typically drop about 24-72 hours before the press conference, so more waiting ahead.

The good news is that we’re inching closer to that “Ides of March” zone where hire activity starts to churn in the market. And “when” you hire is often dependent on the candidate, as “heavies” tend to go later in the market while the up-and-comers lean a bit earlier.

  • Chris Holtmann (DePaul) - March 14th
  • TJ Otzelberger (ISU) - March 18th
  • Todd Golden (Florida) - March 18th
  • Brad Underwood (Illinois)- March 18th
  • Bruce Pearl (Auburn) - March 18th
  • Chris Jans (Miss St) - March 20th
  • Jamie Dixon (TCU) - March 21st
  • Jerome Tang (K-State) - March 21st
  • Kevin Willard (Maryland) - March 21st
  • Dennis Gates (Mizzou) - March 22nd
  • Dan Hurley (UConn) - March 22nd
  • Dusty May (Michigan) - March 23rd
  • Micha Shrewsberry (ND) - March 23rd
  • Mark Byington (Vandy) - March 25th
  • Shaka Smart (Marquette) - March 26th
  • Jeff Capel (Pitt) - March 27th
  • Pat Kelsey (Louisville) - March 28th
  • Nate Oats (Alabama) - March 28th
  • Rick Barnes (Tennessee) - March 31st
  • Grant McCasland (Texas Tech) - March 31st

Rabby just posted this…

So, since it keeps being discussed, I walked it up several ladders once again, the Brad Stevens stuff, and I was given a very hard wave off, on multiple fronts. I was told this by one person: “Rabby, you’re embarrassing yourself by asking around.”

I’m not saying one way or another…but I’m pretty sure rabjohns would be THE LAST person they would tell if Stevens is coming….plus if the goal is they want to keep it quiet. I mean, the guy owns his own website based on rumors.

Sorry, wasn't for me.  Background on these 6.  Didn't go into pros and cons.

  1. Jerrod Calhoun
  2. Alan Huss
  3. Ben McCollum
  4. Bucky McMillan
  5. Niko Medved
  6. Ryan Odom

Huss was an assistant under Dana Altman and played with Kyle Korver at Creighton from 1997-2001.  At High Point he went 27-9 last year and won their conference and then did it again this year going 29-5.

He's young at 46 years old, born in Decatur, Illinois.......we could do a lot worse if we are looking past our Top 7-8 potential coaches.

Purdue has made exactly 1 final four in 40+ years using this strategy. Yes, there is a rotating list of schools to make final fours without 5 star type talent, but the ones who consistently make it consistently get 5 star talent whether that's from high school or the portal.

Weird, it opened for me no problem.

Summary of the usual mid-major suspects: Calhoun, Huss, McCollum, McMillan, Medved and Odom. Nothing terribly enlightening but a nice primer for those who don’t live and breathe this stuff. Based purely on the inflection of it, Zach seems to like Medved a bit.

They used to offer a limited number of free "reads" each month... maybe that's the issue...

update: was able to open with a different browser in private mode... that must have been the issue.

Medium-High Confidence (85%) in 1 of these 4 getting the job

3 of the 4 aren't realistic options so I guess you're saying it's going to be McCollum.

Stevens

May

Alford

Schertz:  had successive wins in NITin middle of the pack major conference teams vs SMU, Minnesota, and Utah…then blew lead by in championship game vs Seton Hall. (Compare it to McCollum level of competition)

Turned around an Indiana State program (more than just team) in 3 years…not easy!

Now, in process of turning around St. Louis.

after turning around the Railsplitters.

Hire one of these guys and go.

I agree, but it's all about putting the team in the best position to compete in March. Talent matters, work ethic matters, drive and focus matter. A lot of things have to fall into place for any kind of run in March, but having high-level talent makes it easier to get there.
