General Coach Candidate News

Recommended Posts

So I went looking for the UNC hot board all I could find was for football .I did end up in a Redditt  page which was sort of like this page and they were debating on if HB  was gonna get another year because IU had to give MW another year ,then they were saying who they wanted ,most of them want Oates  and every once in awhile a poster would say  would you take a gently used Mike Woodson ,and then they would go back and forth on lots of different coaches and how top brass act like boy scouts and could not hire insert multiple names ,so they kind of sound like us .

The real question is how much are they willing to pony up compared to how much indiana is willing to pony up.

If ius contract is bigger not only in contract but also NIL, assistants, etc then nobody would blame him if he left Michigan after 1 year. Even if they did who cares? They don't pay his bills

Yea.  I’m worried they love what he’s doing and will want to keep him.

Their athletic dept revenue is about $250M vs our $150M (I’m adjusting out our loan), so they could pay him a lot and give him more program budget.  They have great football NIL, get the attention of a few donors and they could ramp up bball NIL.

It’s true the support for bball hasn’t always been there at UM, but if they want to, it could be.

Scott has switched from thumbing through the white pages for a Brad to hire to putting in Google images the name "Brad" and calling each face that pops up. He'll get us a Brad one way or another!

Brad pit come on down.

Your the next contestant on the IU coaching game

Brad Stevens is the guy... signed, sealed and delivered.

Nope, BS is not a candidate

Massive meltdown because the "insiders" lied or at best know nothing

100 pages of bickering over who's the best coach

Beard lovers just won't quit

‘Insiders don’t exist’.  Some people have certain access and share what they hear.  You guys better not be beating up on @Chris007.

Beard?  Really?  I had hoped everyone moved on from that.  I have a better chance at being named HC.  Beard is never happening.

I don't think our pitch to Dusty May is primarily about money. It's about returning home.

He will have lots of money and resources at either school. If he still dreams about coaching his alma mater, only IU can offer that. If he doesn't, then why leave a place where he's already having success?

I don't think Michigan will ever invest in basketball to the same level as IU.

1. SD has been courting BS for over a year

2. SD and BS recently travelled to New Mexico together to visit the set of a tv show

3. They are closer than most recognize

4. 10 days ago talk began to heat up as we announced CMW’s imminent departure

5. Insiders claim SD has his man lined up

6. Throughout the week more and more chatter builds to the point that even skeptics, naysayers, and casual fans start to take note

7. More insiders arrive with corroborating information that continues to confirm that there is smoke coming from BS direction

8. the consensus is no announcement will be made before early to mid-March; the end of our season.

9. A few poster hint that it could be post All Star break at the earliest

10. things reach a fever pitch yesterday.

11. Negotiations go back and forth with IU agreeing to meet BS stipulations

12. Every insider chimes in, indicating we have our man. BS to IU is imminent

13. Our insiders run in different circles and hear from different sources— some from the Athletic Dept, some from boosters, some from board members

14. BUT early afternoon BS is no longer a candidate???

If BS wasn’t interested, why meet?

If BS wasn’t interested why negotiate?

If BS had two weeks why yesterday?

If BS was a ‘no’ couldn’t he have been more definitive in his denial?

I said yesterday that if BS signed, they have to announce quickly to protect the narrative. The only alternative is KAYFABE— to make things appear different than they actually are. WHY? We have a coach. It could be a humiliating distraction for him and the team. ALSO, BS and the All Star break is happening now. Would he want to make the weekend about him? Not likely.

in my view the evidence is clear. Until we hire someone else; or BS says ‘I will not coach at IU last year,’ I will choose to BELIEVE he’s still in play.

This is a really good summary of the last two weeks.

Schertz is McCollum…

+ a year at a tougher conference + three more years at D1 + modern offense.

So remind me again why Schertz isn’t the darling of the board instead of McCollum, besides that McCollum dresses better?

And remind me why a guy like Calhoun, Byington, or Gates isn’t markedly more qualified?

I generally want a younger guy so I prefer McCollum to Brownell, but McCollum is a Ray Harper style lotto ticket guy.

Because he's won 4 D2 championships Stu. That's why people are infatuated, lol. Kiss the rings baby

A subset of people aren't weighting the P4 experience or advanced metrics as heavily and think he could be the best "buy low, high ROI" candidate for 20+ years. Not at the top of my list but he's on the short list for me because I like what I see from him... not arguing that he has a better resume than those guys you listed. Maybe I don't have a smart rationale but my cave man brain sees Drake play and hears him talk and says "oooh Home Jersey like, me want to watch more"

I think a guy who clearly knows how to lead and do the X's and O's, with the resources IU has, could be a serious weapon. Two things to snuff out in an interview with him IMO:

1) Personality profile - can he stand the bright lights without melting down/doing all the other things you need him to as the face of the program (this is hard to gauge from interviews in some respect and why he's not further up my list)

2) Willingness to adapt. From what I've read and heard in podcasts/interviews, I think he is capable of that. But I also like his core philosophy and don't mind him sticking to it with appropriate modifications to land high level talent.

For those Buzz Williams fans -- not sure how many there are -- I think he'd be one of those "will he want to leave Texas?" cases.

I live in Virginia and though Tech is not exactly a hoops hotbed, he seemed to like Blacksburg. He only left because the A&M job came open and the word was he wanted to get back to Texas.

He was running to A&M, not from Tech. Plus, he had been an assistant in College Station previously.

I like Buzz. Don't think he'd be my No. 1 choice, but I'd be OK with him. He beat Purdue this season -- that makes him OK in my book!
