These clauses almost never become an issue because college coaches are not the kind of people to sit around and do nothing but collect a check. Archie in particular is a young man and will want to go out and try to rehabilitate his reputation as quickly as possible. Like Tom Crean, he may try his hand as an analyst to give him time to reflect on what went wrong. But he isn't going to deliberately violate the terms of his deal with IU because that would raise questions about his character. Hoosierfan2017 1
lillurk Posted March 8, 2021 Posted March 8, 2021 The Allen # sounds big but per Osterman it’s a raise of less than $1M for next year. So this should in no way impact hoops negatively, and in fact might have a slight benefit of indicating IU is serious and will pay for success. Bobman1, MemphisHoosier, Chris007 and 1 other 4

There’s no way we cheap out on a basketball coach when we’re paying our football coach $5 million a year, imo. Tom Allen has done a helluva job and deserves every penny, but basketball will always be king at IU. Scott Dolson knows that as well as anyone. You aren’t going to be paying the basketball coach $3 million a year when the football coach is getting way more. I expect our new basketball coach to be getting as much advanced Allen at the minimum. This news today tells me that Dolson isn’t screwing around and is more than willing to put up money to get what he wants. taco corp, lillurk, Bobman1 and 3 others 6

Agreed, and definitely makes the thought of who Dolson will be trying to go after pretty exciting, knowing this is showing signs of him willing to pay the big bucks. Like you said, no way the basketball coach will make less than Allen. Dolson is a basketball guy and he’s going to want to make this hire with his name on it a good one. thebigweave and Hoosierfan2017 2
HoosierFan1994 Posted March 8, 2021 Posted March 8, 2021 I take it as really good news that Indiana gave Tom Allen a well deserved raise. I think that squashes the narrative that IU needs to be cheap on this new hire for basketball. lillurk 1

Makes me a lot more excited about the hunt too. Can’t load up with water guns when you’re going big game hunting. I know IU isn’t the hottest spot in the world right now, but paying north of $5 million a year can help satisfy a lot of the concerns coaches might have.

I might be remembering this incorrectly, but didn’t we bump CTA’s salary above Archie’s after we had already hired Archie? I looked and I think we paid him $1.7 million/year when we first hired him. Archie might’ve gotten bumped up if the results had been better, but alas. I just can’t see us bringing in someone new at a salary lower than Allen’s.

HoosierFan1994 Posted March 8, 2021 Posted March 8, 2021 Just looked..of the top 25 paid college college basketball coaches only 11 schools pay their basketball coach more than their football coach. Kentucky and Duke are outliers. Average salary wise, others pay their basketball coach either $500,000 to $1.5 million more. I'm guessing Indiana could get someone around $5.5-6.5 million a year. Would be #3 behind Kentucky and Duke. @Chris007 Is this realistic thinking? Not saying this to overpay someone (like UCLA did with Mick Cronin). But if the right guy is there...
