NCAA MBB Transfer Portal

Lol. I had a great night with my Boys. Soccer dub and baseball dub both on homefields. Awesome evening.

As far as the transfer portal, our staffs recruiting, and the general message board vibe right now. I’ll just say——devolved. This staffs roster management is really something. They can’t get their foot in the door on worthy recruits right now with the world to offer. It’s crazy town. You’d think we have looming sanctions hanging over us like the plague based on the cold shoulders we get in recruiting.

Anyway, each day I HOPE we back channel some star player somewhere that wants all we can offer. Until then I’ll enjoy the crickets of our recruiting efforts. BUT I prefer crickets over Grant Gelon, Tim Priller, and the like, so maybe silence and 15th fiddle will work out for us.

I don't know....we did land 247's second rated transfer recruit.  I certainly prefer landing Ware to Ledlum.  The issue seems (from the outside) of putting too many eggs in just a few baskets.  I don't think the Ledlum signing at Tennessee would have stung as much if we had more irons in the fire.

Agreed. I was always Battle>Ledlum for IU anyway so this Ledlum recruitment has been odd to me from jump. Knecht would be perfect, can’t get in the door. Love might have been ok. Shut down there. TimberLake, couldn’t get in door. Girard who’s whatever shut us out. I liked a lot of earlier guys we didn’t even try on. Still hoping the staff knows and is waiting. It’s about the only sane explanation to our approach. So, I’m counting on it.

I believe you didn't like the idea of pursuing Simas Lukosius of Butler early on....thoughts now?  Just my two cents, I always considered Jamison Battle a subpar defender -- certainly no a fleet defender -- and think Lukosius can add as much shooting as Battle would.  Also like Lukosius' vision in terms of seeing the floor.  Good passer.  IU would have to get on him quick though as he is setting up official visits.

I like Knecht as well, but I still have this nagging feeling...if he's a top ten transfer recruit, how could Northern Colorado finish 8th in a low major conference like the Big Sky?  It just seems to me that a guy who is supposed to be that talented would win more than 12 games just based on him alone against poor competition.  And it wasn't like they lost a lot of players from the previous year when they were 22-16.....they returned their top two scorers -- one who averaged over 21 ppg in 2021-22 -- but with Knecht have such a bigger role in the offense in 2022-23, they won 10 fewer games.  Obviously there are a lot of moving parts that go into it, but it is a head scratcher.  Makes me wonder if ultimately Knecht isn't just a guy who puts up big numbers but doesn't help his team win.

I’d be ok with a guy like Simas as our third spot. I think assuming we get X back we have a serviceable 3 starters with high ceilings but significant question marks. I wanted an upgrade at the 2 and 3. I think Galloway is a solid borderline starter too. The Miami guards ate him alive and he’s going to struggle in some matchups.

Simas is not the level of player I’m interested in but as our 10-11th guy, id find that fitting for what Id be trying to build.

Are there any jucos available or perhaps high performance D2 kids?  Not saying we have to go that route but it seems I see kids from those ranks be a big contributor for teams

it’s helpful when people make crazy assertions that he is going to be a key contributor next season

Gunn does not have all measurables we want. He didn’t play because he isn’t a good defender. When he did see the court he was a chucker and one of the worst percentages I can recall

I wouldn't say he will be a key contributor next year unless he steps it up big . Way too soon to tell, but taking a cheap shot at him is wrong just because someone made a crazy assertion about him.

Gunn is not a good defender, I agree. I don't think he plays many meaningful mins this year.

But, Gunn has EVERY measureable we want.

Have you watched Butler much?

I don't think there is a team in the country he's only the 10/11 dude on.  We should have made room for him last year.

Tyson and Reynolds don't look like they'd be bad options from the little bit I saw of them.  We have to get more from the portal than just the 2 bigs.

Seems like they were really counting on Ledlum and couldn't seal the deal, that's a bit concerning since he was clearly a priority.

Serious question - what does IU have to offer that is more than UNC, Kansas, Tenn.? They want these guys just as bad. UNC finally got their first today. Kansas just got their first.

I truly don’t understand how people are coming to this conclusion that we should be able to just get anyone we want to talk to us when they have options like that and even those schools are by all accounts “struggling” worse than we are in the portal.

UNC and Kansas?  Yeah, they are tough, all things equal the beat us and we are a domino effect.

but the answer to that question is holes and PT. Kansas and UNC are the domino effect teams.  When They have a hole, they can target and usually get one of their top options within the internal domino effect of the blue bloods.

we got Ware in a big spot of need.  Makes sense someone would want that TJD opportunity.  But we have 2 more spots of heavy NIL options. You’d think that would talk.

Yes.  He was a top 2 player on a terrible Butler team. He was solid but unspectacular.  I do think in the right system he can start and provide good impact.  The 10-11 is probably exaggerated but I find it hard seeing him a starter in on a top tier team.  But then again, that can be said for Purdue’s guards too.  Put him on a team like that he might go wild.

Catch and shoot, spot up, and PnR #s were all very good last year. Outside of the first game of the season he shot 39% from 3.

He isn't an elite athlete, but he's Miller Kopp with legit guard skills.

I'm not sure he isn't better/a better fit than a couple of the wings we've "missed" on.

Two players. Both played the 2/3 on a Power 5 team last year. Both young and similar size. Similar defensive ability. Who do y'all like?

Player A:

GP    MIN    FG%    3P%    FT%    REB    AST    BLK    STL    PF    TO        PTS
32    33.3    42.6    37.8    80.0    4.0      2.9      0.1      1.0     1.5    2.0       11.6

Player B:

GP    MIN    FG%    3P%    FT%    REB    AST    BLK    STL    PF    TO    PTS
35    28.9    36.7     32.6    79.4    1.7     2.4      0.1      0.6    1.4    1.2    11.0

Kinda interesting.

There have been 1,499 players enter the portal since the season tipped off on November 7th.  52 of those have withdrawn from the portal while 404 others have made a commitment - leaving 1,043 players still available in the portal.

It doesn't appear IU can land anyone better for the 3 position.
