An outstanding Hoosier Hysterics podcast with Coach Ya is now online. Of course, he cannot talk about specific portal recruits. However...

Some interesting first best quotes takeaways from Ya:

  1. On IU portal recruiting: "This portal has been a lot. But, we got something to smile about today, and hopefully in the next couple of days and in about a week or so we'll have some more to smile about."
  2. On choosing who to recruit from the portal with NIL: "There are guys in the portal that are just looking for money. They're just straight looking for money. They don't care about winning...That can't be the primary reason you're coming to Indiana. At the end of the day, like everybody else here you're trying to hang a banner. You've gotta have the right type of people here to hang a banner."
  3. On the current portal structure: "Again, it's a necessary evil. You can either complain about it and lose, or hey; it is what it is and try to go get you some players and figure out how to construct your roster."
  4. On the coaching fraternity's internal discussions: "Most coaches are walking on eggshells because they have no idea what is going to happen to their roster. None of them. And the mid-major coaches especially. They're just, they're terrified."
  5. On Malik Reneau: "Obviously, Malik, he told us early; coming back."

He definitely says all the right things. I continue to be pretty impressed with the professionalism of Woody and his staff.

Don't know why but that last quote put a smile on my face. Humility and loyalty from MR. I mean obviously it helps when you see yourself being a major contributor on next year's team but still.

I’ve liked MR quite a bit early on. Not much else than a gut feeling. He strikes me as a pretty smart player and I think he figures it. Hopefully as soon as next year.

Cleveland is intriguing but I'd rather have Knecht.  Cleveland averaged around 14 and 7 and is 6-6, only averaged 2 3PA a game so his 35% is a small sample size granted a big jump from his first year.  3 years left, I wouldn't want to tie up too many scholarships for the 2025 class though.

I think you take talent when you can get it and worry about that later. There’s going to be attrition. If we surprise and make deep runs we may have multiple kids leave early.

It might not be an either-or thing, though.

I would think Cleveland could make a "jump" and go to the NBA next year. I don't think you could tell him no.

Are we connected to Cleveland, does anyone know? Or should we just assume somehow/some way Ya can get us in that door, too?

What a dumbass tweet by Katz.

Penn State: 9th. With a total of three players on their roster.

10th and 11th, IU and Illinois. Per Katz, because we don't know enough about their rosters. I'M PRETTY SURE WE KNOW MORE ABOUT IU's TEN PLAYERS THAN PENN STATE'S THREE!

Yeesh.

I'm all for having fun in the offseason but it is way way way too early for him to be doing that. Yes, it appears Sparty is going to be really good and Purdue top 25 good if Edey returns. Outside of that? It is a huge question mark. In a month making lists like this will have more substance.

I like Cleveland and would be all for reaching out. FSU was such a mess and that kid played hard all year. Doubt he’d be looked at as an alternative to Knecht, who has ball and facilitation skills that Cleveland doesn’t. He’s more of a pure wing guy and if he was in an either/or situation it would more likely be with Ledlum, though I doubt that would be the case.

There are a couple other guards that Adam Howard is at least staying in contact with on social. there are so many guys out there.

when was that Ya podcast recorded? Do we know for sure?

if it was yesterday then that means they got word on something that wasn’t Ware and should be announced soon. They also are expecting something else in “a couple days”

I think the podcast was after Ware committed.. I didn't listen though, admittedly.

I mean... do you have info? Or can you just admit you're guessing?

What do you mean, "it ain't happening y'all" what isn't? But no, I don't see Kanon being any sort of a contributor Day 1, if he were to reclass.

A gut feeling. Not a thing that seems to happen often in basketball. It's happened to us before though with Trey Lyles.
