Lotta talent on the floor too. That gives me hope he has gotten more agressive. IMO that was his main weakness. I think up to this post, he has done EVERYTHING good to great at times, but just never seemed to take that next step. I get why some scouts have him as a sleeper for the NBA after this year, but it will take him taking that extra dribble, shooting more and going to the rim more. He is good once he gets in the lane.

Preface this by stating that I am a huge Juwan Morgan fan;
Juwan's defensive effort and recognition at times last year was completely subpar. Juwan Morgan and Curtis Jones really really needed a different coach, maybe more than anyone else on the roster.

I agree. I was just saying there have been plenty of signs of being able to do everything asked of him in his role, but consistency and lack of agression took him out of games too much. Archie will make a huge difference for both and I know practice wise CuJo has already improved leaps and bounds. I think Freddie McSwain will improve the most from a new coach. Crean only used his athletic abilty. Archie will use his toughness and strength as major positives for him as well as his athletic ability. I am very high on him as well.

Guys I hate to be contrarian, but I have a different view of Juwan. As IU got to the point last year where it was clearly a lost season (at some point we're all going to go back and reflect on just how dark it got), Juwan seemed like the only guy on the floor trying. Seriously he behaved like he wanted to win when no one else did.

Me too. Newkirk really made up for his start to the season and started to wear on me. Hope he makes a bigger impact this year and cuts back on the turnovers.

He needs to be consistently solid. He doesn't have to be great, but as long as he's doing his job I think we have enough talent to be a tourney team.

We cant have anymore of those absent minded turnovers in adundance like last year. PG's are a huge part of a team's success these days and Newkirk needs to improve for us to get where we need to be. Let's hope Archie can put him in spots where he excels.

I may have made this point elsewhere, but part of Newkirk's problem early was finishing. He shot 50.5% on 2s in conference play and only 43% in non-conference. At one point he was actually under 40%, which is awful. He looked a lot better once he quit missing bunnies.

in limited minutes as a frosh, Juwan was hyper-efficient on offense and really good on defense. Some decrease in effectiveness is typical in extended minutes...that, plus the injury and maybe a bit of defensive malaise as the season unwound didn't help.

He's a prototypical 4 for Archie's offense, watch Archie explain the transition short roll off a drag screen in this video. Arch wants a 4 who can catch, turn, and make a play. Ideally Juwan brings enough shooting, ball-handling, and decision-making to either make the defense pay for leaving him, or the defense respects it so much they won't leave him, opening the floor for the guard. He's a heady team defender.

In thinking about 2017-18 IU's best case/worst case scenarios, the case for optimism is something like: offense remains stellar and improves slightly by decreasing turnovers, and an improved defense (focus and scheme) leads a veteran-led team to surprise. That's not a high ceiling, but I also don't think it's far-fetched if these two guys play like they can.

Would love to see that implemented more, even on an alternate road jersey or something?

Co-sign. I've always thought it would look sharp on our jerseys. Missed opportunity so far.

Agreed, I really think they could do a lot with that script Indiana. Too much could be a bad thing but we don't use it enough. I'd like to see a script Indiana alternate jersey used during the Crossroads Classic

I'm with you guys. It could be "that" jersey that makes the occasional and sometimes unexpected appearance for big games and the like.

Even if not using the script, it would be cool to see them make something like that. Something the guys really like that gets them amped up a little more when they find out they're wearing it for a particular game.

Same. Adidas has done pretty well with the alternates; recall the stars on the shorts started with an alternate. But script Indiana would be a great touch — certainly an upgrade on the Kansas/Maryland game once from last year (which were fine but not outstanding).

Heads up for those who park in this lot, but the new wrestling/volleyball arena construction fencing is now up next to Cook Hall. Won't eliminate that many spots, just something to keep in mind if you park there. Will be blocked off until September 2018.
