Yogi's Picnic Basket Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 This. His teams often lack something; this year a pg, in the past a true post players, and with his best team at IU he lacked height in the backcourt. He's an above average recruiter that struggles to build a team. He's had more opportunities to have higher ranked classes because of the transfer rate from IU. He hasn't recruited nor developed his bench to overcome injuries. He's recruited some players with questionable character. He's been given way more credit as a recruiter than he deserves. I will say this most teams have flaws and I have noticed when we have something its usually something else were missing. A great coach finds his strengths and builds his team around it to avoid the weak spots from being made vulnerable. Crean can't so that. If we miss a pg than he puts the ball in 8 kids hands and how does that help? It gives no one on our team a true chance to learn to be a point. We miss a post player he throws an athletic kid down there and hopes and prays but it takes away that kids true abilities. Like Troy. He tries way to hard and forgets how to make the game simple. The ones that can well they usually have continued success. Crean looks for his players on the recruiting trail not what the team needs. He has gotten a tad better but it has hurt us plenty of years. He used OG so bad it annoys me. JBJ finally got some screens the other night and he made easier shots than he has all year. He puts Green in too much with other ball handlers and makes him invisible on offense. When he is in he needs the ball to make a difference on the game. TB just does whatever he wants and I don't think Crean can do much about that but he is our our only big beside DD so he kinda has no choice but DD should see more minutes to limit TB being a guard at times. This season is pretty much over so to late to fix it now, but Crean's coaching is affected by luck a lot too and he just hasnt had it this year. I wouldnt be surprised if we won the B1G tourney just cause it seems so Crean to me.Sent from my LGLS676 using BtownBanners mobile app HoosierAloha and Btownclouds 2 Quote

It's been pretty lackluster ever since. Lost his ability to bring in the right guys. http://kentsterling.com/2017/02/18/indiana-basketball-is-tom-crean-a-great-recruiter-a-look-at-every-class-tells-the-tale-iubb/ I appreciate you bringing this which refutes the "great recruiter" tag Crean always gets labeled. Now we're down to his kids graduate, so it's not all against him at this point. Quote
Popular Post Stuhoo Posted February 21, 2017 Popular Post Posted February 21, 2017 The recruiting has been plenty talented, has included numerous five stars and McD AAs, and has included numerous diamonds in the rough. It's the results with those recruits that have been unsatisfactory. I remember it often being said about the prime of the RMK era that he could beat you with his players, and if he had your players and you had his, he would've beat you then too. That's what we are shooting for. Hardwood83, Hoosier_roots, HoosierAloha and 6 others 9 Quote

He makes the game complicated. Crean coaches in the same manner. The point of the game is to stop the other team from scoring while scoring. He's over complicated things so much he's confused his own team. That's not some basketball genius that others can't keep up with that's a bad leader and coach. Yogi's Picnic Basket 1 Quote

Adillac Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 In today's game I think you need significant recruiting to be at the big boy table. If 5 schools are getting the lionshare of the top 20 kids each and every year, then it's always going to be those schools as the 1-3 seeds in the tournament, etc...it is not a coincidence that the same schools with the top 3 seeds are the schools with most of the top 20 kids. I think coaching is very important, but if Crean could have recruited better, he would have had a yogi ferrell for this year's team, and he would have had shooters for the 2013-2014 team. When does UNC, Kansas, UK, Duke, Arizona, have just a staggering weakness on their roster...they usually don't. Quote

Stuhoo Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 I'm beginning to wonder if Glass is even "thinking" about making a change. Is it even on the table?Sent from my SM-G935P using BtownBanners mobile appWhy are you beginning to wonder? What single speck of a thing has Fred Glass done in the past few months, since this season began to go downhill, to make you think that Glass is becoming less likely to dismiss Tom Crean?Yeesh. thebigweave, ThompsonHoosier and Napleshoosier 3 Quote

If he's involved then I think that shows that the team's lack of success is really affecting the money supply. kottke 1 Quote
Hoosier Guy Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 He should've been fired after either the 2013-2014 or 2014-2015 seasons. But the third time will be the charm Quote

Banksyrules Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 I've met McRobbie and he doesn't know much about basketball, but he's a great President. If he's getting involved it does mean the donors will decide to dry up funds. I base this on my experience with another IU department when the donations were decreased.
