And how many NCAA Championships do they have in the last 30 years...1.

It's ridiculous how fan bases view themselves.  However, to act like Indiana is not an elite program is borderline foolish.

Yeah I live in Southern Indiana work in Louisville, and some U of L fans are annoying saying we're not elite because we haven't won a championship in 30 years and I reply with so you guys weren't elite since you went 27 years between championships and how many banners do you have hanging. Usually that is the end of the conversation.

If they hire the wrong assistant after K goes, then they can quickly become irrelevant. No one is immune to a bad coaching hire.

In the next 5 or so years the landscape of college bball will change drastically.  Coach K, Roy, Pitino, Jim Boehiem will probably be retired.  If they don't make home run hires they will feel our pain.

I was just listening to idiots on the Radio in Louisville.  Said IU fans were the most delusional fan base in the area and we are not close to an elite program.
I would argue that what makes you elite is a combination of a elite fan base (check), elite facilities (check), elite money (check), and elite coach (TBD). All we need is a coach. The talent and winning will return.
They make it sound as if it is impossible to improve our situation and that it is a zero sum game.  Only KY, UofL, Duke, NC, etc. can be elite and how dare we even try.
Pisses me off!!!!

All this nonsense from rival media is due to fear of inadequacy. Deep down they know that we are a hibernating power. They realize that with the right hire we are going to match or possibly surpass them in success. Therefore they have to double down on the things that have helped convince them they are better than us. Expect a lot of this until we announce Donovan.

Yup, it's time to end our "ebbs" and "flow" again in the college basketball world...

Something that hasn't been brought up regarding a new coach. I want to play Indiana schools in the noncon. I want a three year rotation with other Indiana schools. I wouldn't mind seeing the Crossroads Classic end and setting up a home/home with ND or Butler.

Schedule:
Year 1: @Eville, FW, Butler
Year 2: Eville, @FW, (neutral) Butler
Year 3: @ISU, FW, Butler
Year 4: Eville, ISU, @ND
Year 5: ISU, @Valpo, (neutral) ND
Year 6: Valpo, @BSU, ND

I want IU to play at least one away game in the state of Indiana every year. We talk about wanting to recruit the state and keep the best home. I think there are several ways to do this besides the coach. Playing around the state in venues that are more accessible to IU and cbb fans would help this.

I want the classic to expand to us playing both Butler and Notre Dame.

I have co-workers who are Purdue, OSU, and Michigan fans. They will all be crying, scared, and envious if we end up getting a coach like Donovan...a mix of emotions I can't wait to witness, ha. There is also a guy who is a diehard Kentucky fan. He out of all of them is the most respectable basketball fan I've come across as far as being rivals to IU. When IU does something really well, he always has positive comments to say to me, and when we screw something up, he doesn't say a word and gives me zero crap. He has also said to me many times that he believes IU is an elite program and needs to get back to that level. It's quite refreshing to hear considering all the immature Purdue/Michigan a-holes I deal with daily. I mentioned to the Kentucky fan co-worker that there's a chance we may get Donovan and he said "oh wow, that would be huge. That would strike fear into the rest of the Big Ten, if not the nation. That'd be awesome for you guys." The Purdue fans just laugh in my face and say "you wish" or "we'll see". I'm sure the first step in putting that fear into the hearts of the Purdue fans at my work was Crean being gone. Makes them start to wonder..

I used to work with  UK fan who was very similar. He is very realistic. Not every year is a championship year to him.

He called our performance against UNC last year perfectly.

I don't still talk to him. Would be interesting to see his take

I could go for a two day event in Indy with IU playing both Butler and Norte Dame. I'd like to see IU play pu in the years they don't play twice in conference. Make it a huge event with 4 other DI instate programs playing before the prime time games. Could help the whole state.

I looked around the internet yesterday and I saw a lot of respect for IU from competing basketball fans.   Many people were saying Illinois, NC State and others were screwed now that the Indiana job was available.   People were saying that Crean did less with more than any coach around.  That word "elite" gets thrown around so often, it's  ridiculous.  Kentucky fans arguing with Duke fans about who is more elite?  They do that, as do other school fans.  Too many people worry about being crowned the best of the best.  It's such a dumb argument IMO.

This +1. Upgrading facilities is expensive and time-consuming. Upgrading a fan base? Very difficult. Hiring a great coach and bringing in difference making players? Relatively easy. For example Duke is "elite" for exactly ONE reason, actually one person and they will likely find out what UCLA did after the Wooden era. That guy is tough to replace.

The Rupp Rafters board had a comment that Bob Knight made IU and no one else can win here.

Uh, we had two titles before the General walked in the door.

Thank you!  I get tired of the "You were only good when Knight was there".

Sensible conversation to clarify your stance without name calling, on the internet? What is this world coming to?!
Like to see people take this route.

Honestly I have always thought the majority of people on this site are great at that. 90% of the time it is what you quoted. We all get sucked into a bitchy argument here and there we regret, but that isn't the norm. Refreshing

Just because we are not currently elite doesn't mean we can't be again soon. The right coach makes the difference. We already have the money, the facilities, the high school recruits in our backyard. The five national championship banners hanging in the rafters.

To me, the real mistake was keeping Davis more than 2 seasons, hiring Kelvin Sampson when we had money to do much better. We wouldn't even know who Tom Crean was if we wouldn't have settled after Knight was fired.

Agreed, I pointed it out for the larger context of our current society. It's nice to see both sides clarify their statements rather than devolve into name calling and getting pissed off.
