TOM CREAN FIRED

Recommended Posts

Gotfried is being paid 2.3 the next 3 years to go away. If NC State can afford that surely we can afford 4.5 million? If we wait till the July 1st mark it willl set recruiting back either that or he will have to come right and and leave for AAU tourneys.

At least we can count on not winning the B1G tourney. That could probably save his job, but we know for a fact we won't win it. It's Indiana they say!

I'm still a little worried Glass will keep him.

If the booster money really is starting to dry up then I think it'll be easy for Glass to cut him loose.

Kent Sterling article talked about the struggles with Indiana high school recruiting.  This is something I have believed for some time now.

Quote

Since 2009, the State of Indiana has produced 20 top 30 recruits, as ranked by ESPN.  Indiana has signed three – Yogi Ferrell, Cody Zeller, and James Blackmon, Jr.  Some, like Mason Plumlee, were earmarked for Duke or another obvious destination, and nothing Crean could do would have stopped that.

The upcoming class is the most troubling though.  Four top 30 players in the 2017 class call Indiana home, and none will play for the glory of ol’ IU.  Instead, Indiana will welcome Justin Smith, who is ranked 80th, Clifton Moore, and Al Durham – who are both unranked.  One or all might be the next Oladipo, but we don’t know that yet.

Recruiting Indiana successfully is integral to winning at Indiana because if you can’t sell an Indiana kid on the notion of playing for IU, what kind of success can be expected in recruiting a kid from the east coast who can’t point to Indiana on a map?

Edit: I apologize. I guess you really aren't talking to anyone on this board. You said Crean supporters. Ok resume the lynching.

Always the first to toot your own horn lol.

Crean was recruiting at a high level and had a recent B1G title and Sweet Sixteen visits. It was premature to call for his firing when this thread started. Waiting turn out to be the best thing anyway, depending on who we land. Billy D was not an option at the time. We've had more time to watch Archie and other young coaches. And now it's blatantly clear to all that Crean isn't the future. I don't regret supporting him while I did.

Waiting absolutely screwed us.  If we would have made the change when we should have, Stevens would be coach here right now and I highly doubt he would have left IU to take the Boston job right after taking the IU job.  I could be wrong on that, but really don't think I am.

Sadly, private conversations with high school and summer basketball coaches in Indiana reveal that Crean has burned bridges with them, and as a result the recruiting well has dried for the Hoosiers in the Hoosier State.

Crean’s philosophy seems to be to recruit the best athletes he can with the longest reach.  The result for the 2016-2017 team has been a hodgepodge of talent ill-equipped to function together as a basketball team.

There is no obvious cultural mold to which Crean adheres in evaluating recruits.

This pisses me off so much. Why poison the well like that?

Meh agree to disagree there. If Stevens never went to the NBA, who knows if he would have jumped later. But if we did it back then, and didn't land Stevens, the other names we heard a lot were Shaka and Marshall... yikes.

I am talking about the Season he left Butler to go to Boston.  Stevens said IU was his dream Job.  If we would have fired Crean and offered Stevens, he would absolutely be our coach.  Actually, I just looked it up and Stevens left a season earlier than I initially thought but even still, Crean should have been fired after the embarrassment that was Syracuse anyway so the timeline still fits.  And I would take Marshall over anyone not named Stevens, Donavon, Wright, Pitino (Rick), that is on our somewhat realistic list.

I agree though, Shaka is terrible!
