TOM CREAN FIRED

Recommended Posts

We definitely could. Not sure if we will. As easy as thebjanuary schedule is, the February schedule is much tougher. Historically Creans teams peak early and falter come the end of January/early February. That's why it's so concerning we are playing so poorly right now. Thomas Bryant hasn't even hit the freshman wall yet.

If this team is peaking now, we are in some major s$&+ come late Feb. early March!

Well the rumors in the spring were that Stevens wouldn't even listen to IU unless there was an opening. So as an AD you have to be willing to fire Crean to even talk with Stevens to see if he is interested.

You can't just keep Crean until his contract expires. College athletics doesn't work that way. If you keep him, you have to extend his contract for recruiting sake. I'm a firm believer in the 4 year rule. Where a coach is under contract for the 4 years of the current recruiting class. That way it lets recruits know that the coach is safe barring the unexpected.

So really it's fire Crean and go for the fences or stay with the devil you know and settle for mediocrity.

I'm just not impressed with anyone in the college ranks. Sean Miller probably won't come here.. I'm sure Archie would love to come here.. but i'm not sure if he's ready for the B1G. it would be a gamble for sure.

Anything is going to be a gamble unless it's Stevens or Coach K lol

I'm sure Stevens would hear IU out once the celtics are eliminated in the first round this up-coming playoff. and Honestly, i'm not impressed by any head coaches besides the Millers that would make me jump the gun. So i guess my short list would be Stevens or one of the millers.. but those are like X.Y options.. STEVENS is every letter before those two letters lol

If stevens isn't interested, Keep crean until his contract is fully over and go from there

No thanks. Keep crean and the crap basketball he plays. Not in a million years.

I know this is the common belief, but high profile schools like IU don't make a change unless they have a pretty good idea of the caliber of coach they will get if the job becomes available.

The only way to get a "pretty good idea" is by reaching out through back channels to the back channels and third parties of the guy(s) they want to hire. This way it gives the desired coach a chance to say "I have not been contacted by Indiana" which is true, but in reality their agents and representatives HAVE been contacted.

So Sampson was the best caliber we could get?  And the same for CTC?   Ouch!

I get that but just like Harbaugh at Michigan. Michigan didn't know or send feelers out to him before they fired Hoke. It was done after bc the AD was also fired. Sometimes a fanbase has had enough and you have to make a coaching change. Which is where IU is now. IU won't know bc the back channels to Stevens was saying he won't talk till an opening happens. That's the rumor anyway from the spring. So IU will have to have their ducks in a row and fire Crean before they can make a move for the #1 guy.

Will Stevens come? I don't know but you don't hold the program hostage bc you don't. You can do the back channel talks to gauge interest in other candidates like Sean Miller and Tony Bennett. The contract must be $5 million plus to get a top coach from a top conference imo.

I'll go back to the Harbaugh/Michigan example again as I followed that closely as a Michigan football fan. The interim AD had his backup plan in place of Harbaugj ended up saying no. Les Miles would have been the guy. It didn't get to that because Michgan was all in with their effort to land Harbaugh. IU, while having a safety net, needs to be all in to land Stevens.

Under no scenario should the safety net be to keep Tom Crean.

What would set IU up with the best chance of getting Stevens? ...Also, has the athletic department 100% committed to firing Crean at the end of this season (barring a FF run)?

I don't know if they are 100% committed to anything to be honest. I'd assume to land Stevens you have to do what Michigan did for Harbaugh, get the family/friends involved. When you make the financial offer to the job it has to be fantastic. If you have to pay Calipari type money ($8 mil), then do it. I know money isn't everything but the Celtics are not going to pay Stevens that type of money. They could just pay McHale $3 mil and be happy to have a solid coach. In my mind you offer what you feel the Celtics won't match and you have his family and friends on board to lure him home. It would be a tough sell and he still may say no. If he does make it public so the fanbase can move on and go spend some serious $$ to get a top college coach.

It doesn't matter if they could've sign all 3 or not that is completely irrelevant. All 3 players took less than a Max contract to play together, therefore they all took a PAY CUT. There's no other explanation for what they did.

But they ended up with more money. If you take the job that gives you more money you didn't take a paycut.

Back channel discussion take place but a lot of programs swing and miss on their first choice nonetheless. BS and Shaka both pulled out of discussions with several bigger programs several times. I imagine the back channel discussions can lead some all the way to the job whereas in other cases it may only lead to a discussion.

Yep valid point.  I wasn't necessarily saying that we'd know exactly who we would hire, but rather we know the kind of coaches who would be willing to talk if the job was open.  It'd effectively go something like this

IU: Would you be willing to talk if we had a coaching vacancy?

Prospective coach's representatives: Yes, but only if there is a vacancy.  (Or no, of course).

The last three wins prove crean will be here along long time. He is on a roll.

Those 3 wins were hardly a gauge of anything except Crean's ability to schedule cupcakes. If THAT's the curve that we are grading CTC on, we might as well pack in it right now.
