IU Candidate: Billy Donovan (OKC Thunder)

Recommended Posts

The program is actually in no need of "work". It's primed and ready to roll. I think people are failing to realize that the program is teed up for a great coach.

If Fred will actual pulls the trigger on crean I think we will pay big bucks. This won't be a rebuild and landing a player like Romeo has us right back in contention. I could see Donovan getting five stars right away.

Brad Stevens: 166-49 (.772)

Sean Miller: 334-112 (.749)

Billy Donovan: 502-206 (.709)

Archie Miller: 138-60 (.697)

Dane Fife: 82-97 (.458)

No offense but which one of these is not like the others?

No offense taken. I am not saying that Fife is necessarily the right choice, or in any way is the first choice. I am quite sure though, that he is not leaving his MSU Associate Head Coach job to be an assistant anywhere else.

What I AM saying is that there are reasons he will likely get consideration if the IUBB job opens:

  • Young
  • IU
  • Defensive POY in college
  • Lead recruiter and Associate Head Coach at MSU
  • Took over a first year in D1 small school and improved them every year til they were +.500
  • Mentored by two HOFers

These elements are ONLY relevant if Fife has the "it" factor. I'm not sure if he does!

FWIW, prior to their first hire at a big time job, here are the won/lost records of some pretty good coaches:

  • Krzyzewski  73-59
  • Donovan  35-20
  • Roy Williams  0-0
  • Izzo  0-0
  • Boeheim 0-0
  • Stevens 0-0 (not that Butler was a "big-time" job before he took it, but it was pretty established and was Stevens's first go).
  • Pitino 93-55
  • Dean Smith 0-0
  • Popovich 76-129

Once again, I am not comparing Fife to these guys; I'm just saying that if he is special, now is the time to move on him.

I saw that last night and had the same reaction.  Wasn't there some Sesame Street song about "One of these things is not like the others, one of these things doesn't belong"?

Personally, the level of disappointment I'd feel if they hired Fife would be as intense as the elation I'd feel if it were Billy D. (or even the other four coaches on that list).

IU has to at least CONSIDER an "IU guy" so that it doesn't disrespect the former players.

That's an interesting take and one I wouldn't have thought of.  Right now there aren't really many ex-IU guys out there (at least not currently head coaches), so I suppose Fife would be the most prominent of the group.

Im just hoping for one of Stevens, Donovan, Bennett, or one of the Millers. After that I'm kind of uneasy but under no circumstances do I want Fife or Marshall.

I don't want Marshall either. Yes he is obviously a good coach but I'm not sold on him at a power conference school. Stevens, Donovan and Archie Miller. Those three are on the list so at least the administration has a clue

Just glanced at 247 and 0708 posted a couple new items after "speaking" with sources. "Yes still saying the same. Donovan is willing to listen. Also Marshal not on the short list." and his short list of potential coaches "Stevens, Donovan, Sean Miller, Archie Miller, and Dane Fife."

Hope this is accurate. This is a very strong short list. I'd be happy with any of them, even Fife, although that hire would make me incredibly nervous. Actually, that list is in order of confidence in their ability to come in a bring IU back to a modern day blue blood, with Archie and Fife being 50% and 20% confidence, respectively.

Fife is way down my list but if by some chance we did hire him then maybe we could actually recruit the northern part of the state.

Just to stir the pot Fife seems like the kind of hire Glass would make. Not a proven guy who costs $$ but someone with potential who may grow into the job.

My gut tells me that's what's going to happen unfortunately.
