Class of '66 Old Fart

(2018) PF Jake Forrester to IU

Recommended Posts

Dude is a necessary element of any successful team. May not get much time his first year but I expect at least a solid contributor for 3 years

Agreed- just hope our fickle fan base will give him that long

I want to see a roster that can play multiple ways. Jake is a different type of player than we have on the roster.

This. I have no idea how much he’ll play next year, but he does bring something this roster doesn’t have. He’s a long, athletic, bouncy fromtcourt player. He brings something nobody else currently on the roster does. That doesn’t mean he’ll be ready next year, but assuming he develops and has skill to go along with it, it’s good to have a guy with those attributes.

Jake is the the type player who I see on other teams and wonder where did he come from and why can't we get guys like that. We have foundational guys coming in next year and they have been recruited to fit CAM's system. This is a new path to success for our program and will not come to fruition overnight.

It was an nit team because of coaching. A decent coach would of had those guys in the ncaa easily.

That’s the problem. These guys got poor coaching for years. Now when the best talent is gone, the top of the roster is a collection of poorly coached role players. Archie didn’t inherit some stellar roster. He is trying to make lemonade out of lemons.

I think JF will bring some excitement off the bench  because of his athleticism. It might not be his freshmen year, but he will be a nice addition to a quality team.

Sounds a lot like juwan Morgan... would take another 3 of him

WAY longer, and three inches taller than Juwan.
Not as skilled as Juwan.
Like others have said, JF fits a profile we haven’t seen. Perea was supposed to be this, but was a disaster.

So maybe 15 minutes a game next year?

I don’t see it. He doesn’t seem to be an instant impact player. Depending on how he improves over the summer and bulks up he could be a situational player as a freshman. Worst case scenario he practices daily against Juwan Morgan as a senior and improved that way. Personally I hope that’s what happens.

Sorry I hate to be negative because I do trust Archie and his vision, but those are the types of guys we've gotten for years here yet we haven't been past the Sweet 16 in 16 years.

I'm just getting tired of that being the best thing people can say about a recruit we get, how "we need guys like this to compete for championships".  Yeah but we also need 5 stars, and we keep whiffing on them.

It's too early to tell what type of coach CAM will be here. But everything he says leads me to believe the program will be built on three and four year players. He is obviously pursuing some five star guys but I don't think the program will be organized around them. Honestly, lack of five star guys hasn't kept us from success recently. Maybe they haven't been the right ones but we have had a few with little to nothing show for it. At this point, and I could be completely wrong, I don't think Coach Miller is the Coach K or Cal type of coach in terms of recruiting. My main worry is that the kind of kids you are talking about won't want to play for a coach who demands conformity to a system. Style of play may become a factor.

Very true.  I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'll only get excited about players like Forrester if we were also landing 5 stars.

The top-20 players more often than not will make everyone around them better.  There's a reason why the senior version of Will Sheehey wasn't nearly the one we were used to when Cody was around.  I know Vonleh was here too but there were a ton of things wrong with that particular team.

Will just didn’t care his senior year with nobody else caring. He was done with Crean, didn’t get along with others on that team, and they just weren’t good anymore. Having 5* will have as much bearing on Forrester’s game as Vonleh had on Will’s. Forrester needs to control what he can and continually improve. If he can do that there will be place on this team for players with his skills.

I also think it’s hard to get excited for the players that fill out a team in the instant gratification era, but players like him IF they develop are players that are just as important as those 5* even if they don’t get you as excited when they commit.
