A small Kenny Johnson story: I lived in Louisville for med school while he was getting fired by Pitino and caught in the scandal. I was behind him in line at an BBQ place and introduced myself, thanked him for his time at IU. He asked me to come with him to his car as he took his food out to go and had a trunk full of boxes as he was literally cleaning out his office. Handed me three different autographed pictures of Victor Oladipo and shook my hand. Gave one to my Grandpa and have two downstairs hanging in my man cave. Love this hire. He’s a great dude.

I’m very excited for this hire. I think he has a chance to be really good. He lives, breaths and sleeps basketball. Plays an exciting style and will be able to recruit elite players. He seems like a dude. I think he’ll be known as D square to me. Go Hoosiers.

Good evening to all, I assume most of you have been anxiously anticipating my reaction to the hiring of our new coach; Darian DeVries. As you may know, my relationship with Coach Woodson was very strong. He's a great friend of mine. With that being said, I do believe that over the last four years, we witnessed the worst basketball coach in the history of the game.. I love Mike, he's a great man, and his wife makes a frighteningly tasty pot pie; but I can not lie to you all, and that is not what I will do. As for our new coach, DeVries was not my first choice. Archie Miller was, and is the answer. I liked a few candidates.. Andrew Toole from Robert Morris University, Darris Nichols from La Salle University, Brette Tanner from Abilene Christian University, and Doug Gottlieb from the University of Green Bay Phoenix were absolutely scorching at the top of my hot board. The night before the hire was announced, Jeff Rabjohns snuck down the chimney of my Bloomington log cabin home, sh*t in my bed, and I was awoken to his cold hands moisturizing my torso with sugar-free honey. He whispered into the darkness of my bedroom; "Archie's coming home, Ricky.." So to say this hire surprised me, is an unbelievable understatement. Bring back Jordan Geronimo, and my negativity will flee. Regardless of whether you wanted anyone else or not it’s time to get behind an actual college basketball coach leading the program you are invested in. No need to call out anyone on stuff that didn’t end up happening or playing the I told you so card. IU program has moved on and so should this message board. This has been the wildest coaching search i've seen. a lot of misinformation all around and too many twists to keep up with. If it ends up being DeVries, we are getting ourself a hell of a coach. WVU this year was 20th in overall defense, and 9th in the country in defending the 3P, he also really emphasizes 3s over 2s (WVU attempted 849 3s compared to IU's 632). His brand of basketball is modern, and very different than Archie/Woody ball we are accustomed to. He'd also bring his son, and most likely Stone, Amani, and Powell with him. He knows how to work the portal. Not sure why people are questioning whether or not he'd be a good hire - i'm guessing because everyone wanted the grand slam hire, myself included. But he'd be the best hire since Sampson

Some really interesting comments made by the 247sports WVU staff in their reaction podcast: They confirmed that DeVries had been in talks with Indiana in some form or another for over a month. They believe (but can't confirm) there was contact between Dolson and DeVries in the Bahamas (one of them even insinuated that DeVries may have known IU was going to open up and he'd be candidate, and that's why he elected to shut down Tucker DeVries for the season to preserve eligibility after just 8 games -- zero proof to this, but interesting he'd even suggest it). DeVries had given Indiana a hard yes last week, and was waiting for tournament results to finalize and sign. Once IU and WVU got snubbed, things were set in motion rapidly Sunday evening, and by Monday Dolson and DeVries met to finalize the contract. This wasn't the expected timeline, but it worked out perfectly for Indiana -- and better for WVU in the long run, since they can get going on their coaching search before the tournament begins. Iowa was never really in the picture; they wanted DeVries, but not only were they way too late to the party, they lacked the firepower to contend with IU. It was also noted that Iowa lacks the NIL support that WVU has, so it would've been a pretty tough sell for Iowa to pry him away regardless; Iowa being "home" for DeVries was likely their main selling point. Once it became clear DeVries wasn't even entertaining an offer from Iowa, they knew he was gone. They felt they could compete with Iowa to keep him, but not Indiana. They also anticipate nearly the entire roster to follow the head coach and/or assistants (wherever they end up). That about sums up the portions relevant to Indiana. They rambled on a bit about what coaches they'll target, the new landscape of college basketball, the future of non-B1G/SEC power conference programs, etc. I'll add this: the tone of the podcast was pure dejection. They had felt like they had their guy for the long haul in Morgantown, and had been extremely excited for the future with DeVries. They sounded incredibly bummed to lose him. I almost felt bad for them lol. I suppose that's how we'd feel if Cignetti packed up and headed out of town to take the Texas job or something after one year.

The fantastic son I am, I took my mom to Mother Bears on the west side for her 76th birthday last night. Around 7:30 in the evening, I looked up and Coach DDV, Rod Clark, and DDV daughter all walked in. After our dinner, we walked over to say welcome to Bloomington and told coach it was my mom's birthday and that she had spent 42 years working at the University. Super nice people, were so gracious, felt like we could have talked for an hour. My brother, who wasn't sold on the hire, has now met him, plus heard a couple of other stories has changed his tune.

Word this morning is IU has the largest NIL offer out to Wilkerson by a SUBSTANTIAL amount and those that truly have inside connections still have every reason to believe IU is still likely the destination for him. IU also has the largest NIL offer out to Conerway. We are in a really good spot to land 2 of the best guards available in the portal. IMO would be top 3 backcourt in the conference.

Hello everyone new to the panel but a DD fan. Just a little info on DD his first group of players 3 of them are in Drake's records book. One of his assistant coaches Garret Sturtz a former walk on is the all time rebound leader. Another one of his players a Indiana guy D.J. Wilkins Merrivile all time 3pt's made. And another Indiana guy Roman Penn Bishop Knoll/ Bosco Institute all time asst leader. He also had 6 Region guys in his group. All those guys graduated and a few with there masters. He's had 4 assistant coaches leave to P5 jobs. And one is a head coach. Three of his former players are assistant coaches on D1 staffs and 5 of his players are playing overseas. That's just a little about what he's done while at Drake.

Just my opinion, but ready to move past the Stevens talk. Let’s talk about our new coach! I’m excited and ready to watch some good basketball again. Really curious to see how he does at IU with top level talent (if he gets them). Seems like he recruits well, so ready to give him time and watch how things shake out. Lets ride!

We hired a guy who flipped Drake, flipped WVU, who had a top three transfer class in his first year, who has a top 25 high school class for next year, and continued having a decent year after losing his best player and from a P5 school. and people are pissed. Anyone who thinks it’s not a solid hire is living in fantasy land

I'm actually with Rabby on this one. There's a chance we could hear something today. If not today, tomorrow. If not tomorrow, the next day. If not the next day, the day after that. If not the day after that, then the day after that. But I do think before the calendar changes to April, we will have a coach.

Was told we have Wilkerson, hoping to lock down the Sun Belt kid on Sunday and the 25 PG who decommitted from UK will visit. That’s all I got so far.

New poster here, looking forward to seeing what our new coach can get done in B-town. I kind of look at this hire as a bit similar to Kelsey at Louisville. Maybe not the first choice, maybe not the big name, but might just be what the program needs right now. Happy to turn the page from the Mike Woodson era and more than willing to get on board with our new coach. Looking forward to hanging out here more!

if it's DeVries, I implore you all to give him a chance before jumping to conclusions. let's see his product on the floor and what he can do in year 1, i think he will surprise the doubters but that's just my opinion. i will be celebrating with some very old, very expensive bourbon. i feel like for the first time in years, we have a legit coach who understands the current landscape of CBB

Rabby reporting his sources say Wilkerson is now leaning IU but things are fluid and could change.

This is the reason why I have stopped posting over the years. Some of you all are insufferable! We could land a top 5 recruiting class and it still wouldn’t be good enough. I think it’s funny that things have been tight lipped with our coaching staff, but yet people seem to know we are missing on almost everyone. Have a surprise, only ONE team gets that recruit. IU is not as exciting as it once was for recruits. Yes, they may know that we have history, but a quick google search shows how bad we have been for the last 10 years. It’s okay to be critical, I get it, but some of you probably would complain because he breathes air. If a recent top school goes after the same recruit, guess what, they are gonna have a better chance than us. Coach Devries needs to build a culture from the ground up, and I want him to do it the right way. I would rather him get the foundation set now to set us up for consistent success, not scramble every year. Coach Cig turned us around in one year through toughness, grit, and a culture reset. Why can’t we give Coach Devries the same chance to do so? Some of you are ridiculous with the constant negativity and coach bashing.

So he is following 50% of our team for next year. Good sign!

Make no mistake about it, DeVries wanted Conwell and wants Dix (pause). Conwell was a miss, but the kid has never liked IU. Grew up in a Purdue household and even being an Indy kid, putting 'INDIANA' across his chest has never meant a thing to him. Dix wants to come to IU, but has some family things that are far more important and could win out in the end. It's all about the system and who fits. Grabbing the top names mean nothing if they don't fit the new system, and what I love about DeVries is he isn't willing to waver or make exceptions to that. 'The process is the process.' Let is play out. We should be announcing our new assistants this week, and a couple talented players will be following them soon after. We will have a roster that fits by late-April

Before the announcement Christian Watford had posted some tweets lobbying for Will Wade. But since the announcement he's posted several tweets supporting the DeVries hire.

I'm cautiously optimistic. I was hoping Dolson had a bigger fish, and I had become partial to McCollum. But at the end of the day I had said consistently that I wanted IU to hire a real, legit college basketball coach that is a grinder, is a winner, and has a history of building culture and identity. I think we've got that with Devries. I'm not 100% sure, but I think we do. I also remember watching Drake in their conferences championship game last year and thinking, "i wish IU played like that and i wish we had players like that (Tucker Devries and a couple of their guards)"

If you are melting down on DeVries, I don't know what to say. SOLID coach.

Some of you complain about the Big Ten not being able to compete in the tournament due to antiquated style of play. But as soon as you have a coach that is attempting to run a more modern style of play with a modern roster you begin to complain about the lack of big men. It doesn't make sense. Let Coach worry about who is playing what position. If we see issues next year, we can voice our complaints in the "Fire Coach Devries" thread. :)

Getting a sitting young Power 5 coach would be a good look for IU. DeVries would be a solid choice and I believe he was on my original list of coaches I wanted IU to seriously look at. If it’s him then IU will have an actual college basketball coach running their program again. Get this wrapped up Scott I got some First 4 to focus on tonight
