I'll never understand why PSU let him go to be honest. What he was able to do at PSU runs deeper than just wins and losses. That program was in shambles (for good reason) when he arrived. 

And PSU played ND incredibly tight right up until his “all world” QB made a risky throw and the ND DB jumped it. 
 

I agree that if he gets decent resources, he’ll be very competitive at VT. I actually really like that fit for him.

And Franklin's super-skill, which he has continued this year is to get resources, both for funds and with recruiting successes.

He was always terrible coaching down the stretch in big games. It’s obviously tough to win against top 10 teams, but Penn State would almost throw their big games away with 4Q clock management and playcalling decisions. James Franklin was essentially Tom Crean for Penn State football, if every year was the 2013 NCAAT.
