In this day and age with phones and social media, you've got to be an idiot to partake in this stuff or let it happen. Naked stuff has always been apart of it because it's considered the most humiliating, it's also the dumbest to do these days because people will literally be charged with sexual assault. Even when this stuff was considered "ok" it was dumb. Doing it now is really just idiotic, like a death wish.

Haha, true.  I'm so glad there weren't cameras everywhere in the 90's

Agree 100%! I can't imagine growing up with this stuff everywhere. But I guess you just wouldn't do have the crazy dumb stuff we did. So glad I was able to.

Pat Fitzgerald apparently has about $40M left on his contract. Northwestern says, "You'll get nothing and like it."

I like how it says Fitz's lawyer is "evaluating possible litigation."

Oh -- there will will be litigation.

The NW-Fitz thing is unfortunate. I never played at the college level so I'm completely oblivious with the ins and outs and what have you but I played the sport for 10 years and I recall being hazed with the teams I played on only once. I was a sophomore starting DB on the varsity and was 'hazed' by my fellow defensive LBs (all upperclassmen). And I wouldn't really consider it hazing. They picked me up in the locker room and carried me over to the toilet and began to attempt a swirly (Is that what they call these days?) only to pull me up before it ever happened. And this happened after a couple weeks into the season to where I was able to prove to hold my on own on the field for the team. It was all in good fun and all parties involved, including myself, never really felt threatened or came off as serious. Basically, a lot of smiles and zero issues. It felt more like an initiation and welcome to band of brothers more than anything.

Were there incidents (questionable wtf moments) in the locker room where a one off player confrontation occurred? Yes. Were those confrontations personal? Yes. Were they ever a team building thing? No. Can I count on one hand how many times it occurred? Yes, once. Were the two players involved reprimanded by the coaching staff? Abso-effin'-lutely!

So my question to anyone that has played at the next level. Is this a thing (the hazing part, not the accusations of abuse etc. etc.) that occurs at the college level often?

It’s really amazing how stupid people can be.

I think just like you, most what is considered "hazing" these days is just dudes messing with each other.  It's all in good fun and no harm intended.

Now I just don't buy the "stories" that have come out with NW football.  I believe they may have messed with dudes that made mistakes, dumb plays, or whatever.  But the nakedness and "humping" allegations see far out there.  These guys are football players -- if something went "too far," somebody's @$$ would get kicked.  They usually don't take a lot of crap.

Hell back several years ago at our high school, one kid was getting harassed by the "chosen star" of the team.  The victim took maters into his own hands and pissed on the star's gear.  Sure he got in trouble, but the crap stopped.  He went on to be a state placed wrestler and in college was part of a championship team.  :)

Rick Telander article on the Fitzgerald firing.  Telander is a Northwestern alumni and is as respected as any Illinois sportswriter -- has been award Illinois Sportswriter of the year eight times.

Yeah, just the virtue signaling trying to outdo the virtue signaling. There are even calls to stop the plans to renovate their stadium.  We pretty much now know why NW football generally sucks.

The ‘stories’ of nakedness and dry humping (“running”) at NW have been investigated snd documented.  There really isn’t any doubt to their truth.

If I was the Ryan family, I'd be questioning my $480 million stadium donation right now. I don't think that's out of line at all.

Why?  You either rebuild the program and facility to compete in the Big10.  Or you join the MAC or something, where they belong.

We’d be very different billionaires. I’m not giving a dime to that rudderless dumpster fire.

Most kids aren't going to kick another teammates @$$ because they are being hazed. Guys want to fit in, they want to show they can handle it, that it doesn't bother them. True hardcore hazing serves no purpose and doesn't bring guys together, it's just a way to humiliate, tolerate bullies or carry on some old school tradition ("I was hazed so you're going to get hazed"). Messing with teammates and making them do stupid stuff, chores, etc. isn't the same as "hazing" that has been described, true or not, which we'll never know. But nudity has been apart of sports and fraternity hazing since hazing has been a thing, so I don't find it that hard to believe. I played sports my whole life and was in a fraternity. What's being described is pretty common if indeed that type of hazing was occurring.

Another thought is that the firing of Fitzgerald could have something to do with the contribution....i.e., with the situation about to come very public, maybe the donation doesn't stay without changes.

Northwestern released a summary of the investigation document.  Quote:

The hazing included "forced participation, nudity and sexualized acts of a degrading nature" in violation of university policies.

No problem.  I'll just leave it at this gem from John Henry Wigmore:

"Cross examination is beyond any doubt the greatest legal engine ever invented for the discovery of truth."

Yeah, I get it, but it also doesn't make sense that a university would open itself up to the ramifications (legal or otherwise) that come with a statement like that if they weren't damn sure.
