That’s certainly the simplest connect the dots move and given the relationships there it would make a ton of sense. But is that an actual upgrade? Wouldn’t pretend to be able to judge football coaching talent, but it doesn’t really feel like much of one unless they think the issue with Franklin is that he just got stale.

Yea.  He might wait for Florida.  That’s a better fit for him vs moving north.

I think if you asked Lane about taking the PSU job over a couple of beers he’d look you dead in the eye and say “too cold.” Not that Oxford is tropical, but idk if he leaves the south.

My inclination was the same. But the top B1G schools seem to be putting a little distance between themselves and the non Texas (oil money) SEC schools in terms of funding. I literally don’t know enough about it, but I could at least see a scenario where Penn State is an optimal job finance wise in a way that a place is like Ole Miss is not.  If Day went to the NFL I bet Kiffin would jump at Ohio State in a heartbeat, for example.

Some time people just want change for change sake. Very rarely it works. Georgia bouncing Mark Richt for Kirby Smart is the one time I really remember it working. All too often you get a UW situation where they bounced the second best coach they’ve had AND landed the hot young coach they wanted. And you see how that has worked out.

Rhule is a good coach but I am not sure his resume is better than Franklin’s. Franklin just made the playoffs, won a game, and narrowly lost to ND. You’re basically betting on change for change’s sake unless we’re missing some behind the scenes info.

I recall reading that South Carolina was very close to hiring Kirby Smart after Spurrier resigned. When Georgia found out this was coming down the pike, they fired Richt just so they could make sure Smart didn't get away and could bring him back home.

You can tell Nick Saban is retired because if he was still coaching at Alabama Franklin would already be on the staff there as some sort of consultant.

IMO, Matt Campbell would be the home run hire they are looking for. PSU definitely an upgrade in every way over ISU. He was born and raised in Ohio, so knows the area.

As is the case with most things in life, would have to have the wife on board for this to happen.

It’s kind of amazing how often that worked for guys.

It's pretty crazy how many head coach openings there are now and how many are probably coming:

Current:
- PSU
- Va Tech
- UCLA
- Arkansas
- Okie St.
Soon:
- UNC
Chance of a change in next year or two:
- Florida
- Florida St.
- Wisconsin
- Auburn
- Michigan State
- South Carolina

I probably missed a few.  One that could be coming and it's a top-5 or so mega-job is Michigan.  Sherrone is stumbling a bit and his buyout isn't much for UM.  If he has a bad rest of this year, I could see UM losing faith in him.

Anyways, I don't have anything else to say except it's quite the list.

I think a lot of it has to do with schools needing to start doing background on hires earlier so they can get things done as soon as their seasons are over so coaches can hit the ground running when the portal opens.

I think Rhule to Penn State and Campbell to Nebraska is more likely tbh

I think Campbell would be an excellent hire and maybe that’s sort of where they end up. But I don’t imagine they spent almost 50 mil to go get the guy from Iowa St. They’ll be taking some big swings 1st. Side note: how funny is it that a guy who’ll be 65 before he coaches a game in the ‘26 season and has coached 19 games at the high major level would be considered maybe the biggest swing of all? And yet, of course he is. What a time this is.

Freaking knew it. Eli Drinkwitz now coming up in connection with Penn St. His agent is The Man. Got Drink’s name attached to LSU and got him a big extension when there was no chance he was a candidate there. He’s about to do it again. He’s also Marcus Freeman’s agent, so don’t be surprised when you start hearing about how Freeman is “open to Penn St overtures.”

Good work.

On cue, Penn State fans on another board I frequent are already passing along information from a Penn State mod that says they have a "better shot than we thought" at Freeman.

I think the only reason for Domers to start worrying is if Ohio State opens up. I have zero reason to believe that Penn State is a better job than ND right now and from the outside, it appears that Freeman has completely bought in to everything that comes with being the ND football coach.
