Popular Post Walking Boot of Doom Posted October 9, 2017 Popular Post Posted October 9, 2017 I’m of the opinion that Garland is the most important recruit out of all 2018 AND 2019 targets. With Garland, we have a stud PG for 2+ years. I think he guarantees that Romeo can focus on scoring and solidifies his commitment, and ensures 2019 wings and forwards they will have a premiere ballhandler when they join. For those arguing Romeo is a must get, or about who are the must gets in 2019, Garland is a great option to help your opinions become reality. Iugradman, CR3AMnCR1MS0N, VO5 and 5 others 8 Quote
Hurryin' Hoosiers Posted October 9, 2017 Posted October 9, 2017 I was on the fence about whether or not IU should recruit Garland but you just talked me into it. Lets get Garland :) Walking Boot of Doom, Stromboli and ALASKA HOOSIER 3 Quote
Bailey7878 Posted October 9, 2017 Posted October 9, 2017 Would love to have him but I have a gut feeling we get Romeo and he goes to Vandy or UK. It's really hard to get a read on this one and the article doesn't provide any clarity. You got it.Sent from my SM-J700T using Tapatalk ALASKA HOOSIER 1 Quote

But while college football commitments Camron Johnson, Gavin Schoenwald, Jackson Sirmon and the rest of the Eagles are logging reps at Carlton Flatt Field, the school’s most coveted collegiate recruit is nowhere to be found. He isn’t far away, though. When he's not crisscrossing the country for AAU, recruiting visits or other basketball-related business like last weekend’s men’s junior national team minicamp in Colorado Springs, Brentwood Academy’s Darius Garland usually can be found in one of the school’s three gymnasiums. Brentwood Academy senior point guard Darius Garland shoots during practice at Brentwood Academy Middle School Andrew Nelles / The Tennessean The two-time Tennessean Midstate Player of the Year and TSSAA Mr. Basketball recipient is gearing up for what will be his fifth and final season playing for the prominent Williamson County private school — one he’s confident will end in a school-record-tying fourth consecutive Division II-AA state championship. “Four-peat,” Garland said with a smile. “(Brentwood Academy alumnus) Brandan Wright did it, and I just want to follow in his footsteps.” At the same time, however, the 6-foot-2 Garland, who’s widely regarded as one of the nation’s top high school point guards, is winding down a recruitment that has spanned more than three years. ”I never thought I would get this much attention, but it’s been like this since freshman year so I feel used to it now,” Garland said. “It’s been great, building relations with other coaches, seeing new faces and meeting new people. I mean, legendary coaches are calling me and texting me every day.” Garland, the nation’s No. 3 point guard according to 247Sports composite rankings, recently narrowed his list of finalists to four schools — Kentucky, Indiana, UCLA and Vanderbilt. He's not sure when he'll commit, but his dad doesn't expect him to wait until the early signing period starts Nov. 11. It can be a lot at times, Garland admitted, but he has several resources to lean on within what he refers to as his “inner circle,” which consists of dad Winston, mom Felicia, brothers Desmond and Miguel, trainer Jamal Richardson and high school coach Hubie Smith. “They know what page I’m on," Garland said. "They know my achievements, and they know my goals for the next level and hopefully beyond that. We’re all trying to get there.” Winston Garland, an assistant coach at Brentwood Academy who played collegiately at Missouri State, has been through the recruiting process himself. The eight-year NBA veteran (1987-95) never experienced the sort of recruiting hype Darius has, though. “I wish I could (compare our recruitments), but the game has changed so, so much, man,” said Winston, who was courted by Indiana, Kansas State, Missouri State, Oklahoma and UNLV back in the mid-1980s. “I just tell him all the time, ‘We’re going to do our homework; we’re going to include the people that need to be included; and it’s going to be your first big boy decision.’” Smith, who’s coached Garland since his eighth-grade season at Brentwood Academy, also has spent time with the college coaches recruiting his star player — unlike when high school basketball factories Oak Hill Academy in Virginia, Montverde Academy in Florida and Huntington Prep in West Virginia tried to lure him away two summers ago. “I’ve been very involved,” Smith said. “I’ve talked to all the coaches, and I’ve been to basically all the in-home visits. I want to hear what they’re saying to him. Some people tell you what you want to hear, and my job is to make sure that I get some of the fog out of the way and make it clearer to the best of my ability.” As for the prep schools — a route taken by former CPA standouts Braxton Key and Jalen Lindsey? “Well they didn’t call me, of course,” Smith said. “But we had the discussion a couple summers ago, and to be honest, he told me, ‘Coach, I want to graduate with my friends.’” Added Winston, “Not once did we really think about it. It was great to hear from programs like that, but it was never once an option. My wife and I, we’re firm believers, and we know that He has a plan. He has a plan whether you’re here, Montverde or, shucks, Trinidad." Smith said it’s that kind of attitude, and upbringing, that makes his star point guard such a special player. “When we had a conversation recently, I said to him, ‘You know you’ve been so easy to coach from the day that I met you, and it's going to be interesting this year with all the accolades you’ve gotten how you’re going to be,’” Smith said. “’He just smiled and laughed and said, ‘Coach, I’m not changing.’ “And I don’t think he will.” Reach Michael Murphy at mfmurphy@tennessean.com or 615-259-8026 and on Twitter @Murph_TNsports. Uspshoosier Posted October 16, 2017 Posted October 16, 2017 Garland enjoyed “ridiculous’ visit to Big Blue Madness. He was impressed with the practices and here is a shocker had nice things to say about the school he was visiting. They want him to play along Quickley which he has done in Italy so he says it wouldn’t be a problem. Says all teams are equal at this point.
