(2018) SG Romeo Langford - INDIANA HOOSIERS

Recommended Posts

Honestly I'm kind of tired of the "morals" thing. Cheating pays off, not-cheating doesn't pay off. Knowing we do things the "right way" doesn't do much for me when I'm watching teams cheat like crazy and hang banners because of it.

Yep! I wish the landscape was different but I strongly believe that you have to cheat to win big. Not saying you can't have a good program and MAYBE win a championship but to win in recruiting and on the court every year, year after year you have to get your hands dirty.

I hated calipari for so long and thought he was one of only a few, but now I am convinced all the big programs do it, some just do it better and those are the ones that dominate the top 10 every year.

It would not upset me at all if IU followed suit and that is a big pivot from where I used to be.

Re: Romeo wants to play for a contender

Just a personal opinion...Unless he goes to Kansas, I don't see it. Would love for the kid to play for a contender, but also think we won't be there by next year regardless of if he joins up or not. Maybe he would send us in the right direction but my pessimism is getting the best of me. Would hate for him to regret his decision if he did come here.

To me, these coaches like Calipari and Coach K, don't feel like they are doing anything wrong. These coaches believe these players deserve money. The money finds a way (agents, etc) to get to the player. The NCAA doesn't care. So who is really cheating at the end of the day? As long as the players are coachable and respectable people, the players should get market value for their ranking, whatever that is.

Since that’s the case I sure hope we stop wasting time and resources. I also hope Archie is smart enough to realize that is what is happening and he moves on to realistic recruits we don’t have to pay. I sure would have thought the current fear in the landscape from the FBI would deter that from the majority, but I choose moral high ground over the fear of persecution.

Well, this is the debate always. I thought with Coach Schilling we might play ball. I have to wonder if Sean's staff getting caught has Archie being extra careful.

That's what I care about too. I don't want Archie bringing in questionable guys like some of the recruits Kansas gets. If they're respectable guys, go to class, stay out of trouble, etc., then I'm cool with us playing in the gray area to get them. If we don't then someone else will and we only hurt ourselves.

The only problem is with this theory is it highly illegal. It isn’t just a moral issue it is a legal issue when you bribe a kid to go to a college. Look, if we have a coach that is willing to play the game and we don’t get caught then whatever. Personally I don’t think the risk is worth the reward to pay players. How many cheaters have won a title in the last 10 years? How many people are cheating? Whose to say we aren’t? The NCAA does care, but can do nothing to stop it. The FBI can.

I think we should just concentrate of high level four stars and avoid the 5 stars pay to play deal. The fbi will bring down a few assistants but it's certainly not going to change the face of dirty recruiting. The ncaa doesn't want it to change because it's all about money to them. We could still challenge I believe under a veteran team of four stars under archie. I think that's the best route forward imo.

So we lose out on one top 10 recruit and are in the running to get another top five recruit. Somehow this means we should give up on the top five recruit, panic about the future of our program, not recruit five star recruits, and pay kids to come here as long as we don’t get caught. Got it.

People on here want to cheat to win? Lets wait and see what we can do with a actual coach and what recruits we can land legally. We haven't had a good coach in a while obviously cause some of you have lost your minds. Romeo could still come to iu so quit assuming he isnt when nobody knows anything for certain imo

No recruit high quality four stars avoid the arizona type recruits that want money. Wisconsin has done quite well recruiting three and four stars and not cheating. We have a coach now so we can be successful doing that model.

Well if you didn’t sense my sarcasm from my post I apologize. I think it’s ludicrous after one kid we are in til the end and a handful of games to come to the conclusion we need to pay players. I would assume if anyone feels that way now they felt it before Garland. I disagree very strongly with it then and now. I am shocked one recruit can create this level of anxiety 8 months after CAM was hired. Give the man time. I think we should let this play out before we go nuts. Most of the people going crazy over this months ago agreed a top 20 class was fantastic with Romeo being unlikely. I personally don’t get the anxiety or the sky is falling posts on recruiting but everyone deals with things differently.

I think it has more to do with who we are losing the kids to than the fact we are losing them.

I honestly don’t think it matters. The argument would shift if it’s Kansas for Romeo. We have only lost one kid. Pretty good rate of return for who he has followed hardcore. People want 5* every year. We are 8 months in. We are still deep for one that is a 2018. He hasn’t popped. Nothing has changed with him. Only peoples perception based on Garland and Shittu. It will play out after the calendar turns. Not in November.

CAM’s first meeting with him was in April (7 months ago) and he probably saw Garland for the first time at a live event the same time I did 7 months ago. I’m right there with you I don’t get it either

Hmm, you are assuming that sentiment is a result of garland vs the college basketball climate that was mentioned in connection to said statements and also assumes cheating equals paying players so a lot of assumptions here. I also don't see a lot of sky is falling posts here either, in fact a lot of people saying how fortunate we are to have the 4 star guys we have coming in like Phinisee.

Anyway, I will stand behind my new belief that to get to the top and stay there, Archie cannot be a saint. Look at the top programs and if you believe they got there and stayed there by following the rules to a T then that is fine, I don't believe that for a second, especially after what has come to light on the small sample probe by the FBI

This whole discussion was started from the premise of need to pay players (others words not mine). That was directly what I was referring to. I never said we have to follow rules to a T, but to openly say we need to pay players after missing out on a player (let’s be real if we get Garland this isn’t a discussion) I will disagree with all day.

This is Indiana. If you want to cheat to win, maybe this isn't the university you should support.
Coach Knight could win without 8 5 stars on the roster, a good coach can at Indiana.

This. I want the 5 stars too—but not if it means cheating to get them. A good coach can win with a solid base of 4 star players—with a few 3 Stars and 5 stars sprinkled in along the way. And Archie is a good coach— so we may not contend next year but let him build it and we will contend in 2-3 years. Go Hoosiers!
