Indiana vs Iowa Post Game Thread

Recommended Posts

Time outs are better (like you said, only took 7 years)
Substitutions not as puzzling or frenetic
Defense better
Less TO's. Granted, as recently as Wiscy we had 20 but early in the year we had that many against really bad teams.
Won without stars dominating
Would have liked to have seen Troy roam/cut to the baseline more but at least he did not go "one on three" except for one drive that went too deep.
Crean does not seem to freak out as much when the games get close. In the past when the games got tight he looked like he had been driving for 5 hours and was desperate to find a bathroom.

Some positive changes have been made even with losing James for the season. Pretty impressive job from our boys and coaching staff for not falling flat on our faces.

We have MSU and a few more tough games. It's important that we hold our ground vs Nebraska and Illinois. We love to play down to others levels, can't let that happen if we want a good seed in the dance.

Get a win vs MSU on the road and at home vs either Purdue and Maryland, I think we could get up to a 5 seed.

I don't want to think about the big ten tourney, that never goes our way.

When we win sometimes, like tonight, our fundamentals aren't exactly stellar. We are not a good fundamental team, and we don't win because we out-execute people. When we win, it's with great transition offense, good shooting, and lately, solid defense and rebounding on the offensive glass. Indiana is a bit of a conundrum for me because I don't like the style much, but love their toughness, speed, and the way they run when they're able to do it.

Teams that can slow Indiana down like Wisconsin all the time or Penn State last week generally beat Indiana. When we're allowed to play up tempo, it doesn't always look great, but the floor's spaced so well, opportunities - and points - come in bunches.

Great points , I agree. When teams slow us down, that's when Troy loves to drive it into the lane with 3 guys in his way haha.

Turn our defense into offense and rebounding will be crucial come dance time.

Can you believe that we actually won?

In the predictions thread I had us blowing them out a couple weeks. Posted this morning that I'm feeling an L.

Glad we got the W. No reason we can't compete in MSU. That's all I ask.

Call me crazy but I actually think we can compete with the @Iowa.  Max's "travel every time he moves with the ball" not getting called was offset by Iowa traveling a handful of times.  If TB is allowed to breath he should have a monster game and could get Woodbury in foul trouble.  If Jok gets called for half his push offs and moving screens he'll be in foul trouble too.  I actually think we can compete with them.

I always see opposing teams talking about getting no calls while IU gets all the calls at The Hall, but I don't see it. Yogi doesn't do the best job of going after contact and drawing fouls, but I feel like he still should get more calls then he does. Thomas Bryant's 4th foul seemed like an absolute crap call to me as well. It's seems like players that are strong and can fight through contact instead of flop around like James Harden get punished in today's rules. Yogi should be able to get to the line at will but he doesn't always look to go after contact and draw fouls but even when he does he doesn't get calls he should, home or away, imho. What do you guys think?

The wins nice but I can't get over the fact we should be 11-1 and in the drivers seat of the big ten.

You know what they say? "If my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle" lol. We're going to see how tough they are down the stretch. Go Hoosiers!

Great team win! Our bench play was the difference in the end. I love our freshman's defensive skill/intensity. I was also very proud of the way Thomas handled those two awful calls against him. Troy as usual had me swearing, but he hit a gigantic bucket when we most needed it. Can someone please tell me why Z is shooting lights out and gets pulled? Why take him out when he's red hot? Juwan and Harrison with big contributions in limited minutes, hats off to them for being prepared. Max continues to be a gift that keeps on giving. Finally, seeing Yogi leading his team in that timeout was awesome. I would love for him to be more of a vocal leader. On to MSU. Go Hoosiers!

Watching the game again and still have no idea how Iowa wasn't called for 5+ more fouls each half.  I know Iowa runs a motion offense on most possessions but about half of their "screens" they were moving.  IU players continually got caught in the thigh or hip by an Iowa player moving into them.  Also Jok, Baer, Uthoff, and Clemmons took turns putting a forearm into Yogi's shoulders/neck.  Jok completely pulling Yogi down on the baseline end bounds pass after a made basket.  "Breathing" fouls called on Thomas Bryant.  They missed a ton of traveling calls on Iowa and on Max.  The "kicked" ball call when Gesell passed it into Max's crotch.

This was a terribly officiated game.  My final thought on all this is Iowa's poor free throw shooting was karma for poor officiating.

Edit:  Missed the clothesline by Woodbury on Max

Was Yogi's inefficient night on offense due to his tough defense against Jok? I still have no idea how Jok wasn't called for one of his double digit push-offs or moving screens. Loved Yogi fighting on defense though.

Kind of what I thought. The kid played hard on defense. Except those couple possessions we were in zone. Then it looked like Yogi was only one not in the zone? Lol

They also traveled at least 5 or 6 times with a ref looking right at them. It's like last night's crew was out to prove they weren't being homers.

Yeah I didn't think the fouls were egregious but the non travel calls were awful. Like you said they had 5 or 6 easy. Hell we had two off the top of my head that were questionable at best. One was Troy at the top of the key after he picked up his dribble. He pivoted. Then switched his pivot foot after a pivot right in front of the ref. I honestly have no idea what the refs were looking at last night.

Loved this game! Great team win. The only thing bothering me, (keeping me up nights really) is Troy Williams. He is killing this team with his bone headed plays. Yes, he made some big shots down the stretch but, would those have been as important if he had not blown our lead nearly on his own? Don't even mention the fact that many of his (big shots) are pure, out of control, unadulterated luck. I know many will disagree due to him lucking out now and again but, I just feel he is hurting this team badly. I love his potential but I often wish he played for someone else.
