IU vs Bellarmine Post Game Thread

Recommended Posts

Bryant, Hartman, and Beifeldt played 10, 9, and 11 minutes respectively in the first. 6, 9, and 5 in the second. Seems like Crean played small ball tonight.

#4 (?) was drilling 3s to open the second half with both Bryant and Bielfeldt in the game. Liked seeing RoJo and JBJ get up into their man a few times but JBJ seems to have lost some lateral quickness.

Got out coached. Didn't play hungry or hard enough. Yogi is the bomb. Love Troy. Max is going to have problems with bigger teams. So will Zman. OG needs to catch 500 passes a day. JB needs to get his swag back. TB NEEDS to be healthy. Wish we still had DD and Holt for front court depth. Hartman is athletically very limited. Blackmon has improved his ball handling but not his decision making.

That sums it up. VERY excited for Friday's game!

@akmccarthy: Crean: "If we had a bigger list of positives than we did concerns, we'd be lying to ourselves." #iubb

Crean "likes" my post. Well, except for the first part.

I usually agree with you on most things but nothing that happened tonight makes me think we were out coached. I have actually been very impressed with how well we have run our sets and out of bounds plays this preseason. Only thing I don't like so far is Troy and James bringing the ball up and initiating the offense rather than Yogi

All I think this game proved was what I think everyone already knows.    We're very good when everything goes our way and we're able to play our top end players.  But we're also very vulnerable to poor play and scoring droughts when we have to dig into the bench.   This team has a glass ceiling, I'm afraid.  It's a high ceiling, but lack of depth and experience will be our undoing.    It's hard to count on freshmen to do what we need them to do.   Nice to see Indiana play well for a while...concerning that they didn't play very well for a while.

Were you at the game last night, or watching online?    According to the talking heads at the BTN  this is the deepest team Coach Crean has had.

Talent wise they were coming close to comparing to the Hulls, Zeller, Oladipo teams.  :)

Lack of depth and experience, has been our achilles heel.  I don't see it getting better any time soon.

I would narrow it to lack of depth and experience upfront. Bryant is a freshmen and Bielfelt is a career sub from Michigan even though they lacked a front court presence much of the time as well.

I thought our lineups that will actually play together in the season did a nice job. I guess it's easy to cherry pick on an exhibition game final score. No I don't expect a Zeisloft, RoJo, Burton, Morgan combo with insert any other non scholarship player. Maybe others do... That was the lineup that gave up the 23 point lead. From there it was a matter of getting a run for everyone.

As a coach how can you honestly say during an exhibition game no less we have a glass ceiling a couple of weeks into practice? Is this just previous feelings or did you see something with realistic lineups last night that makes you feel this way? I was very encouraged with our realistic lineups. I honestly don't feel you watched the exhibition game from a non opinionated view to come to this conclusion. I am typically down on this type of a game and came away very encouraged when our defensive intensity showed up with realistic lineups and led to offense. There were times during that stretch in the first half we got lucky but overall that was the best team defense I have seen in 3 years from position to fighting through screens, and even off ball. I just don't really see where you came away from that conclusion outside of previous feelings of this team. The second half was a mix match of different lineups to get a feel for Crean's line shifts. I am not surprised he did that and I would honestly do the same in an exhibition setting. Honestly I usually agree with your assessment but this time I would have to disagree.

Agree. Starting five is very good but with the exception of Rojo we drop off big time  when we go to the bench.

This is what I was trying to find out, but couldn't since I couldn't watch.

I did notice when we played our starters in the second half and Bellarmine started hitting a bunch of threes, we pulled Bryant and went with a 3 guard lineup with RoJo (I think?), and that seemed to help lock down the perimeter.

If we can do things like that with our defense, I'm really liking this squad.

Yea, I can agree with that to an extent. I'm pretty sure I will cringe every time we take TB out against decent competition though.

The truth is he will get gassed, he will face foul trouble, the better prepared we are to handle these in game situations, the better the team will be.

Yeah I don't think this squad is as good as 2012, but I think it's more flexible. We had nobody behind Zeller and if a team was hitting shots we were screwed. I think this team can play both Max and Thomas, or go 3 guard.

I agree. And I have no problem giving up a lead to play guys in exhibition games who need the experience. I just think Max is much more limited vs what some others think.
