Where were you when Bob Knight was...sigh...fired 15 years ago today?

I was in New Hampshire at Dartmouth College.  Those eggheads knew I loved IU basketball and they gave me headaches all day.  I told them I hoped their beloved Old Man of the Mountain would collapse so they'd know how I felt.  They laughed and said that would never happen.

Then it did about 3 years later....

Where were you when you heard the news?

Of course being young I don't really remember much about let alone hearing or reading about it and my dad and I never talked about it. On the political campaign that I worked for my freshman year there was a guy who was on campus the day the news came out and he talked about how people went and messed up Myles Brand's house and rightfully so.

My dad was taking a nap on the couch while I watched TV in our living room. At the bottom of the screen, the local news station started scrolling the message across the TV that Knight had been fired. I read the words out loud, old enough to understand what they meant but still too young to fully grasp what was happening. When I read that Knight had been fired, my dad jumped off the couch and stared at the screen in disbelief, probably thinking he was having a bad dream.

I was also on campus during this historic event. Crazy times.

In all honesty I felt it was time for him to go. Just wish we had some plans in store and de emphasizing basketball by the university was a silly decision.

The university makes good money from ball but if we were a national powerhouse that money would skyrocket. There is a reason Duke and UK can pay their coaches nearly 10 million a year.

I too felt that it was time for a change and had felt that way for probably the last 5 years of his tenure.  What just always pi$$ed me off was the cheapness of the reason used by Myles Brand for his termination.  There had already been far more serious incidents that would have cost lesser coaches their jobs and had one of those incidents resulted in his firing I don't think the furor would have been nearly as great.  Additionally, Bobby being Bobby, he probably would have done something far more serious in the not all to distant future that would have made his dismissal more palatable.  But ever since that time, I always have to chuckle to myself whenever I hear someone use the phrase "zero tolerance" because I immediately think of this specific event.

I like this post solely for the fact that you cursed a mountain, and then 3 years later your curse came to fruition. Are you wizard?

I don't agree with this! This change has brought us this.

Knight was bringing mediocre at best basketball for a good 5-7 yrs before his firing.  The last 5 or so years he didn't get out of the the 2nd round.  I stand by my statement.  It was time for IU and Knight to part ways.

Edit...and if it had been done properly, the routine coaching search procedures would have occurred which would have avoided the Davis debacle and the entire future events would have changed.

I agree with Natty, and if we would have allowed him to stay longer, I am afraid Pat could have been pushed upon for his replacement. We would have been no better off.

Of course you do. Kill a legend. This is what you get when you are stupid. Reall?? you are the most critical here?? You disagree with everything That I say!
