(2016) PF T.J. Leaf to UCLA

Recommended Posts

I don't know why any kid would want to play for UCLA. They have the worst fan support of any traditional blue blood (not even close), and they have Steve Alford as coach. Steve Alford has done nothing in his long coaching career to make anyone think he's able to win or develop talent. There have been rumors that he actually bad mouths Crean and the Indiana program to recruits (that both IU and UCLA are both involved with.) The nerve of that guy! I'm not a Crean supporter by any stretch of the imagination but Crean is a FARRRRRRRR more accomplished coach than Alford. He's a joke and his program is a joke. He's riding a short wave. As soon as a few 5* Cali kids come there to play and realize that they were sold a mirage, not another will step foot on that campus.

neither are accomplished coaches but Alford seemingly has done more than Crean. What are the actual wins, conference championships, NCAA success etc look like between the two?

Just did a quick look and I don't thinks it's close. Alford has bee coach of the year in 3 conferences, won several conference and conference tourney championships and taken 3 schools to the sweet16

Not a Crean Fan but:

1 Final Four

2 time Conference USA Coach of the Year

Jim Phelan & ESPN NATIONAL coach of the year

B1G Champion (Alford Never Accomplished)

Alford has a better win % but you can make the argument that D3 Manchester College doesnt count and that Alford has never had to completely rebuild a program like Crean has Marquette and IU. Also, Crean has severly whipped Alford on the recruiting trail.

we will see about that. UCLA recruiting vs IU? UCLA may be pulling ahead by the sounds of it. Crean's last 5 or 6 recruits excluding Bryant leave A LOT to be desired.

.

I think you're jumping the gun on this recruiting class man. You can put us down for at least 1 McD's AA. No reason or evidence to suggest it won't happen. I agree that Priller, April, and Gelon, are reaches but we aren't elite anymore. We don't have enough pull to bring in a loaded 4-5 star class. We are no where as attractive as our fans think we are. With that said, I think we are going to finish the class with Cujo, Maker, and Davis.

alford won two bigten tournaments, Crean 0 championship appearances. Didn't include his championship appearance and undefeated d-3 accolades

There's a lot of baggage with how Alford conducted himself at both Iowa and New Mexico as an individual.  Overall he may be a better basketball coach than CTC but if you look strictly at the character of a man, Alford is nowhere close to CTC.  And I'm not saying that because I'm a CTC supporter because I'm not.

I'm not just referring to Alford's extremely poor decision making at Iowa. He has had as many, if not more, opportunities as Crean to succeed at a high level, and he has consistently underachieved. I would take Crean over Alford, both as a coach and a person, any day of the week.

Did he underachieve at Manchester, UNM or SWMS? Iowa, yes but he did win two BTT titles while underachieving.

UCLA is still too early to tell but he is recruiting very well

UNM. Every year he'd dominate the conference and flake in the tourney.

Also, he's been recruiting very well at UCLA. He's had what many here would call Final Four talent.
