Williams has the dreaded "potential."   He is an NBA 3 who needs a ton of work on his perimeter game and his ability to defend in space.   He's not going to be an NBA 4, nor is he going to be a shot blocker, so he needs to really work hard on his game outside the paint.   Going to the NBA now would guarantee him a spot in the NBDL for a while and maybe forever.   He's got the body; he needs the refinement.    Good 6'8" college wings frequently have a huge jump to "good NBA wing."

I know we all love to sit on our couches and play mentor/coach to these players but I can only imagine how it must feel being in their shoes. So much attention on you and so much temptation before you're even 20 years old is a lot to handle. That being said I'm sure Troy will be back next year and make the most out of his time here.

I think it's media extravaganza too.  Mom accidentally posted he is returning.  The camp hushed that because they want the media intrigue.  The meeting and then the announcement to stay boosts awareness.  It's a calculated move but likely to announce he is returning.  Leads to fanfare and media indulgence.
