I understand how you're trying to base your argument, but let's take a look at Dayton and Michigan St. Both had injuries or missing players. However, both programs adjusted and for the most part overcame to have a decent season.

Now let's look at IU. Same boat with missing players, and even though the first part of the year seemed promising, the wheels have fallen off. Where Michigan St seems to be gaining momentum, IU is fading quickly.

Do the players have to shoulder some of this responsibility? Of course, but the coach has to take the majority of it.

Three programs, similar issues, only one not getting it done. Where's the common denominator? <----- (rhetorical question there)

I didn't want to post this in the Thomas Bryant thread so it wouldn't get more derailed, so I'll put it here.

 

Since a certain poster wanted to bring up Crean's defenses at Marquette, I thought I'd look up where they ranked in adjusted D according to KenPom.  I was able to go back to 2002, which will cover the bulk of his career, and here are the rankings of his defenses; I'm including his IU tenure, and completely ignoring his first 3 years so no one can accuse me of being unfair:

5 of 11 years his defenses ranged from suck to purely horrendous, 5 of 11 is 45% of the time or slightly under half.  In that time frame he's only had a top 50 adjusted D 4 times, and only one of those was top 25.  Another 3 times they ranked top 100, not particularly good.  I would say he's not much of a defensive coach, and the numbers reflect that.  Doesn't look good, Tom.

This is good. I went back and looked at how his teams finished their last 10 games of the season. 1 year here and 1 year at Marq did his teams have a better winning % at the end of the year. I left out the tournament recod otherwise the winning percentage gets even worse.

Crean supporters like to defend him but the numbers over his career just add more doubt.

The thing that bothers me season after season is that his teams never improve. We stay the same or we turn to poo... The past few seasons the team continues to look tired and more tired towards March. Again, we see the same thing this year. Losing 8 out of the last 12.. losing once again on "senior" night... I'm sure Crean will be here next year, but at some point the IU faithful will not be filling those seats and we will have major problems

That's one of 13 scholarship players on the team.  I projected DD to have a solid sophomore campaign but he doesn't fix our defense or rebounding woes.  We lost at AH to a team without their best player who dominates us.  We can make excuses for days but the fact is other programs are getting it done with injuries, creanings, and other incidents out of coaches hands.

during the season IS the time to talk about it IF you don't want a "Hurried Hire". It is anything but a knee jerk reaction, the writing has been all over the walls for a year prior. He was #1 coach on the hot seat in many polls entering this season!

We're fans. We have nothing positive to do with it, but a whole lot of negative influence. We create situations where the entire 'feel' around the team is negative and it grows because illegitimate sports writers and bloggers latch on and propagate it further, then it suddenly becomes real to legitimate local and national Radio, newspaper and tv.

 

It's not a matter of tough skinned coaches, players or anything of the sort. Normal humans are effected by things like that. Even the tough ones.

My opinion about it, wouldn't have any more or less validity than yours.

 

Would I be surprised if Mo, who liked him enough to want to stay (we think he wanted to stay), is now mad because he wasn't allowed to? No. But, it says nothing about how the 'players' feel.

fair point, but don't you think the criticism and fan reaction is warranted? Potentially 2 for 7 to the dance. An average BIG ranking of 6 for the "good years". Glaring coaching issues in regards to substitutions, zone offense and defense, etc.

My point is, it becomes warranted at a certain time. When would it be warranted for u? 10 years of equal results? 15? Ever?

Most people who lose their positions somewhere, aren't fans of the person taking it away.

 

I mean, every example is someone who would be disgruntled. I'm talking about player who are playing.
