IU vs. MSU Postgame

Recommended Posts

I was driving back from Texas yesterday. Couldn't get a radio broadcast. Only game cast on ESPN. First time I saw this video. Clearly the 2 zebras were watching the ball at the rim and not the play on the floor. Deplorable non-call. Not that it would've changed the outcome much but, we sure got hosed on that one! Thanks for posting the link.

It could have changed everything about the game.

and Izzo totally should have known Brandon Dawson was going to get a concussion at the end of the season right before a road trip to IU... He seemed to adjust just fine

#excusemachine

Teams often win game 1 after such situation. Also, Brandon Dawson wasn't a player in a position of weakness for MSU.

Most people who lose their positions somewhere, aren't fans of the person taking it away.

I mean, every example is someone who would be disgruntled. I'm talking about player who are playing.
We don't know.

True, but 4 year players under crean are rare, so take that as you will

If you remember the creaming started early. Story and williams, did any of those two play their junior year at IU?

Neither played their sophomore year. I'm not sure they were forced out. The would have definitely accelerated our rebuild, had they stayed.

You think we kept Matt Roth, Tom Pritchard and Verdell Jones, and forced out Malik Story and Nick Williams?

fair point, but don't you think the criticism and fan reaction is warranted? Potentially 2 for 7 to the dance. An average BIG ranking of 6 for the "good years". Glaring coaching issues in regards to substitutions, zone offense and defense, etc.

My point is, it becomes warranted at a certain time. When would it be warranted for u? 10 years of equal results? 15? Ever?

As my original post said. Not during the season.

I didn't want to post this in the Thomas Bryant thread so it wouldn't get more derailed, so I'll put it here.

Since a certain poster wanted to bring up Crean's defenses at Marquette, I thought I'd look up where they ranked in adjusted D according to KenPom.  I was able to go back to 2002, which will cover the bulk of his career, and here are the rankings of his defenses; I'm including his IU tenure, and completely ignoring his first 3 years so no one can accuse me of being unfair:

13
119
189
142
67
36
143
84
28
47
225

5 of 11 years his defenses ranged from suck to purely horrendous, 5 of 11 is 45% of the time or slightly under half.  In that time frame he's only had a top 50 adjusted D 4 times, and only one of those was top 25.  Another 3 times they ranked top 100, not particularly good.  I would say he's not much of a defensive coach, and the numbers reflect that.  Doesn't look good, Tom.

To expand on this a bit, I'll throw out the highest and lowest as they are obvious outliers.  The average of the remaining years?  95.  That's right, his average after throwing out the clear outliers is just barely inside the top 100.  With almost as many years with a defense outside the top 100 as there are within the top 100, 4 outside vs 5 within.  If you're being objective, what does that really say about his ability to coach defense?

If you include the highest and lowest, and to truly be fair if you include one you have to include the other, the average of those 11 years falls to 99.  So I'm doing him a favor by throwing out the outliers.

We couldn't keep them all?

ASHAMED of the effort the first 36 minutes on the floor. Outhustled, outplayed, outgutted. This is a game we would have won by 10 points if we'd just given max. effort.

Troy, where were you?

Stan, where are you going on those drives to nowhere?

Colin, if you weren't ready to play, you shouldn't have.

RoJo, if you're tired -- and your lack of sharpness on your shot says you are -- pass up the shots that aren't uncontested.

Yogi, you must be cursed. If you'd made that free throw and the two late 3's vs. Purdue and Maryland we'd be 12-6 and nowhere near the bubble. I suggest a trip to Brown County to find some a local witch doctor in the woodlands there.

Cant agree there. We got our butts beat in the second half til 3 min. to go.

Makes no sense that you can't agree.

If Yogi goes 2-3 then we're up 36-34 at halftime and have the momentum and the MSU player starts the 2nd half with 1 more foul.

No calls can have dramatic effects on the final outcome, of a close game, depending on the situation at the time. Because that was to end the half, it's clear Indiana would have had a shot at 3 free throws, without MSU having the ability to defend it or effect their scoring, it was so much different than the same call 4 minutes prior.

MSU just tied the game seconds earlier, giving them momentum heading into the half.  Then MSU got their butts beat so bad in the final 3 minutes it almost offset the butt beating they did over 17 minutes...
