(2015) C Thomas Bryant to IU

Recommended Posts

At this point, I think Yogi and Troy return, we add Thomas Bryant, and Crean stays put.

If that happens, I want Crean to stop forcing players to fit his style, and make his style fit his players by starting:

Yogi
Blackmon
Troy
Hanner
Bryant

Enough of this "small ball" crap that won't win.

After a full summer of workouts I would hope we could replace Hanner with Holt and then use Hanner a bare minimum of minutes to spell Bryant.

To be a 4 in this system he'd need more than a mid-range, he'd have to be a threat from deep because Crean wants his 4 to stretch the floor.  Without that Holt is a 5 here, the same as Hanner.

Would you consider Troy a threat from deep?

TB could add a lot to this lineup and give a coach options on lineups to exploit opponents weaknesses.

You're saying there's no hope he will adjust his system?

Seems like he would have by now if he was going to.  Last season would've been a good time to, with a good 1 and 5 he could've crafted a decent half court offense but nope he insisted on forcing a system that requires shooters when he had no shooters.

I don't think he's going to suddenly change how he's done things, no.  Frankly, I'm not sure he's even capable of adjusting his system to fit his personnel.  He's seemed very one dimensional.

More than Holt, but not a threat.  Thing is though he's not taking Troy out of the starting lineup, and with the lineup he was running this year the 4 is the about the only place he could've put Troy.

We've seen for 7 years Crean has what he wants to do and he doesn't deviate from it.  He'll force a square peg in a round hole if he has to, he might take sand paper and turn the square peg into a round peg, but he won't change his approach.

I really don't expect CTC to change based on what I have observed for the past 7 years and that may lead to his undoing. My question was rhetorical and I'm not sure if he will ever play three "bigs" together, for example. It appears that he prefers a three guard approach.

Additionally, I do believe Bryant would help, but everyone on the team has to play better team defense, otherwise Bryant would possibly be in foul trouble too often which would be a problem.

There's lots of things to gripe about in terms of X's and O's, etc., but this is my high level, overarching gripe of Crean. I prefer coaches that alter their system to the talent on their roster, not force their talent to conform to their system. Like you, my opinion is Crean is that latter.

Look at WVU this year. Huggins said after a couple of workouts last summer he decided he needed to full-court press with this group. While it took him deep into his career, Bo Ryan has changed his style the last two seasons and it's paid off big time. Coach K has won national titles playing several different ways. The 2010 team was not a typical Duke team.

It won't be popular in these parts, but I've seen Bill Belicek change his teams style from game-to-game and even half-to-half based on what is best for his talent to attack the opponents weaknesses.

I just prefer a coach that's willing and able to adjust his style/system.

Already addressed that too, won't happen.  Holt will have to adjust to Crean's system, it's been that way for 7 years it won't change now.

You can want in one hand can crap in the other and see which one fills up faster. The highlighted won't happen, period, that would require adjusting something Crean is either resistant to or incapable of.

And Hanner has no business playing the 4, at all.

What do you make of the reports that Crean studied teams like Uconn all offseason to have his team adapt to the personnel he had? I am not really an X and Os guy so I do notice subtle changes. Now going to a full court press I would notice or going to a motion from the dribble drive I think I would notice.

Were the halftime changes by Belicek related to psi? Yeah I know, weak. I agree, reluctantly, that BB is a master at coaching based on what he has and/or what will beat you.

Have you seen a difference in the offense at all over the past 6/7 years? We still weave, we still try to drive and kick it, if that doesn't work we repeat it. The effectiveness of it is completely dependent upon roster composition.

I think I literally saw 2 picks set off the ball to get a shooter free this season. Didn't happen last year and it wasn't happening when Hulls was here and needed the help to get open looks.

Defensively........ugh.

I think we did run some new offensive sets this season, so I'm sure some of that was watching UConn tape and I think he mentioned Villanova too. We also went to that man/switch to zone defense. So there were some, I guess I'd call them tweaks to his system.

My post was more in reference to larger philosophical changes. For example, not trying to force the 2013-14 team to run, which only magnified the turnover issues. Bo Ryan allowing his last two teams to be more offensive minded and run more, etc. Maybe IU pressing with this years team.

Agree on screening off the ball. While JBJ had a good freshmen season, he could be a monster if we actually did things to get him open looks, same with Hulls before him.

1987 final four IU vs UNLV. Everyone says IU has to keep it in the 60's to win. The General says nah. IU wins 97-93. Its what makes the great ones great.

Too bad I was born in '90 :(.......wasn't around to have seen moments like these and too young to appreciate Calbert and Co. work the B1G in the early 90s
