Listen, he may have a point in that if things don’t change people will leave the profession. So be it - and, if that occurs, market forces will either change the situation or eliminate it.

For the money they're getting, there will always be people who know basketball and are willing to put in the work. Good luck to him or other coaches on finding similar income. Especially with less work. 

I don't know what Wes Miller's background is like, but I'm going to guess his family was pretty well off.

They are not just talking about the HC's but the assistants. Also talking about mid to low major coaches as well. Miller said his job was what caused his divorce. To me coaches need to stop thinking about jey have to put all these long hours in to he successful.  There should be a couple of weeks in the summer where everything is a dead period and let everyone go home or go on vacation to relax

I call bullshirt.

Not about whether the profession is a year-round job. It is. That's what most jobs are; at least ones that pay a full salary.

But 'normal' working people; those that don't make $100-$300k per year (as college basketball assistant coaches routinely do), get about three weeks a year off. And I am more than convinced that these 'year-round' college basketball assistant coaches get at least 10-15 vacation days a year. If I take "a few weeks off" all at once in the summer? That means I have a total of about three vacation days left for the other 50 weeks of the year.

No, there will not be any D1 college basketball coaches or assistant basketball coaches who will leave the profession. Because then they would be high school teachers and coaches who work for $60k per year and have to side-hustle side night and weekend jobs to make ends meet. And have to teach daytime high school history classes as a condition of employment. And be 'just another guy''; not someone whose ego gets stroked as a daily occurrence.

So...bullshirt.

Did any other f you actually have ake time to watch the podcast. Most of it is just stating that they need to shorten the time of the portal. They want to have it start after the National Championship game and end in the.middle if May.  This is for all transfers including grad transfers. They said that the night before the championship game that the UCONN coaches were on zoom calls with transfers. I feel that is not right do I agree they need to change the dates of the portal.

I watched it. And I've seen this nonsense before.

When Wes Miller says he hasn't had time to clean his own house yet this summer?!!? That's a tell that he's full of sh!t. 

1. He makes about $3 million a year. If he had unlimited time he'd still be hiring a cleaning service.
2. Stop going out to fancy restaurants all the time Wes. You'll have time to spend 45 minutes a week cleaning.

And then, he says it ruins the family lives of his assistants; it's not about him ... that's who he's worried about and cares about.

1. You're the boss Wes; you have three or four assistants - give them each enough days off so that you always have work coverage.

I've seen this in my own professional life; people with unlimited travel, job transfer and promotion opportunities. Some people, recognizing that this can be a strain take their families with them as much as humanly possible and turn down as many fancy-pants dinners and golf outings as possible, so that when work has travel demands (including the required social events), they are not over-extended away from their families already.

Finally, I would have LOVED to have seen Mike and Terri Woodson on that podcast. I strongly suspect they would have provided some much needed perspective and some mentoring.

That's a different discussion and not what I criticized. Wes Miller advocates for a shorter portal season to get to know his own players? Sure ... why not.

But the stuff from that three minute clip is absolute nonsense, and Wes reveals himself as willing to justify bad decisions when necessary during that clip.

Because you know what truly resonates with high-quality recruits and their parents? A text stating "I'm not gonna be at your AAU tournament games this weekend because it's my anniversary/child's 5th birthday party, and me and the head coach decided I should be home for that. We'll be sending a different assistant this time."

And yet IU got a pretty darn good set of recruits during the portal time — two burger boys, a double digit scorer from the MAC and a rotational player from a final four team.  IU did better in the portal period than they did in the nine months of recruiting leading up to it.

Yep.  I was concerned that he would miss out on players because of his surgery, but the bottom line is schools with attractive opportunities and NIL are going to sell themselves.  It’s not a surprise that it’s going to be tougher to bring in a top quality class at Cincinnati….
