New Basketball Staff Thread

If a coaches or players skin tone is a determining factor for anything we do we are doing it wrong

It’s definitely becoming a joke on Twitter. Trilly Donovan gets in on it. Most of our Burners get in on it. I don’t care one way or another but I’d rather Indiana basketball not become a meme.

I also don’t think an all white team will win at the level our fanbase wants. DeVries is getting a bunch of crap from WV fans about it. It’s not ideal.

I also think this “joke” will end soon when we sign a few more players.

Their two best players last year were not white lol

Tonje was so good this year. Dang. Watched him the first few weeks of the season and I was like who the hell is this? Kid never missed free throws. Seemed to just get more clutch as time went along. I just want one guard like this. I’ve been begging for it for decades. I hope we can find one.

We tried that approach the last 4 years, with zero results. Arguably, over the last half of the season, our 3 best players were white. Probably over 90% of players could care less what color their coaches are.

I would hope so.  Key is whether they can coach and make the player better.

Anyone making memes about coaches and players skin color is racist. In what world is that acceptable?

Because fit matters.

Tonje was incredible at Wisconsin. But he was only “kinda good” at two other stops. Gard did a great job evaluating and finding a perfect kid for his system and Tonje responded by crushing it. Gard did it with Storr too. Storr looked like a world beater at Wisky. But he didn’t fit in Self’s system and failed miserably.

I think there is way too much hand wringing over things we know nothing about .  It is April 9th.  There is nothing objective in any of the negative observations right now.  It is being negative for the sake of being negative.  Many seem to be wired that way. The man has been on the job for a few days.  He is assembling a staff and recruiting players.  When things play out there will be plenty of time to be negative and critical of things.  In the meantime go for a walk or read a good book.

Objectively false.  Having a staff in place > not, & to say otherwise is foolish.  It may turn out ok, but it may just as well impact our ability to sign the players we want.  I guess you can either sit out ANY discussion or conjecture until the entire staff & team is assembled, or continue to use hyperbole to mischaracterize what people are posting to try & shout them down.

LOL so I am mischaracterizing and using hyperbole?  Thats great.  I simply said we do not have enough information to claim things are going good or going bad.  Everything about this hire and transition has been done in silence.  Gotta let things play out and see how it goes.  If things go bad there will be plenty of time to criticize how they have done things.

Random thoughts:
I wonder if Luke Goode felt misunderstood, playing for Mike Woodson?
I wonder if Victor Oladipo felt misunderstood playing for Tom Crean?
I wonder what's more important; the five best black players, the five best white players or the five best players?
Does the culture one comes from matter more or less than the culture that must be developed in the locker room between kids from all backgrounds?
I wonder if we added Cooper Flagg and Liam McNeely to next year's team, if we'd still be having this conversation?
I wonder when this world is going to finally get past the color of someone's skin?
Amen

Only since you asked, I’ll respond.  Yes, “hand wringing” was hyperbole & “being negative for the sake of being negative” was a mischaracterization of my post, which you directly responded to.  Not to mention the  “go take a walk or read a good book” remark.    Most of the board does well to avoid this type of posting, I hope you got what you needed from your commentary.

I think there are relatively few that are negative for the sake of being negative, although those few do really stand out.

Unfortunately, there are more that are simply desperate for attention and have found that being outraged and throwing tantrums is a reliable way to get it.

Still others use negativity as a defense mechanism.

Sustained winning will eventually cure a lot of the problems. Until then, no news is bad news, good news is not good enough news, and bad news will be the end of the world.

This is how I feel.  As an fan with limited info, I feel confident judging wins/losses (vs. program resources) and catching major red flags (e.g., losing at home to Indiana State by 21, an obviously not very talented roster, hiring Mike Woodson).

When it comes to the sausage making process of hiring staff and recruiting... I just don't know much, nor do I exactly know what's good or bad.  I've never met these assistants or recruits nor do I know all the dynamics and back and forth at play with landing them.  So at this stage, I personally give the coach a lot of leeway before declaring something is a red flag worth being concerned about.

Now, I admit I do get nervous and my IUBB PTSD kicks in all the time.  But if I remind myself it's very early, not much is known, nothing is seriously wrong right now, and CDD isn't dumb/incompetent.

LOL.  Ok man. Have a good day.  I am going to a tennis tournament and enjoying a nice day.  Maybe we will have a staff and several commitment’s when the day is over

Some, including me, are frustrated with the state of the program over the past 25-30 years, and the ineptitude of the administration to appear to even give a crap about the legacy of Indiana basketball. Hiring Mike Woodson was a mistake of epic proportions. Keeping him for FOUR YEARS, was borderline criminal. The frustration continues to build, based on past decisions, and fear or concern that the administration doesn’t care enough to even try to right the ship.

The new hire (Darien DeVries) gives us a glimmer of hope once again… but there’s a part of me that feels like Charlie Brown, running up to kick the football, knowing that Lucy is sitting there waiting to pull the ball away one more time.

Sometimes negativity is the only way to react to this mess. And while hope springs eternal, the doom and gloom is always there in the back of my mind.

The silence is both frightening and encouraging. Is it silent because it’s ready to fail again? Or is this time really going to be different? Unfortunately, we cannot and will not know until we know.
