New Basketball Staff Thread

It's nowhere near the point to panic but I think people have a more reasonable case to be a little concerned that only two assistants have been hired over the two portal misses. Again, I'm not there yet. But would hope these get finalized rather soon. More assistants opens more doors for recruiting.

Yeah, I'm hearing Preston Murphy might be a no go now. We'll see

I inferred this might be the case from announcing Norton last night without a secondary title (e.g. asst coach and director of player development). That’s what WVU did under DDV for the Cheaney/Hulls types who couldn’t recruit off campus.

Obviously they could always change later but to me that says the three traditional assistants will be Adams, Achoki Moikobu, and Norton

after Bama just landed a kid from FSU.   Doubt he is going anywhere

I’d heard Murphy was the delay but I don’t know the details. Contract stuff and dollar amount. This kinda stuff doesn’t give me the fuzzies. Had heard it was all done though, so……

There are 5 assistant positions who can both coach and recruit, according to Rabby.

Still limited to the number of coaches that can be recruiting off campus at one time.

Hulls recruited off campus last year.   You just have to be certified by the ncaa.  He recruited when Woody wasn’t able to make it

Sure, I may have been sloppy with my phrasing. Your HC and 3 ACs can recruit off campus; if someone is unable to a la Woody while he rehabbed a surgery, you can assign that to someone else.

What I was trying to say: Moikobu and Adams seem likely to be two of the three full/normal ACs. They’re not leaving AC roles elsewhere to be in lesser roles.

Norton is going to be in some role. If they get, say, Murphy (or an equivalent if that dream is over), then Norton’s role is not going to be one of the three bench/off-campus recruiting ACs. Surely he can sub until the 3rd assistant is hired, or someone’s health prevents them, etc. If those options above Norton don’t materialize, he’ll be in a full assistant role (and not “player development” or whatever).

I'm sure he has his new staff working the phones currently. New staff members being announced comes down to quotes, backgrounds being written by the SID, etc., I'd hope they are a bit too busy to gather a quote for a press release.

It would be incredibly normal for anyone they’re hiring to have their own bio already. For a press release any comms person would probably just draft something generic on their behalf for approval - take them all of 5 mins to read and approve. I don’t doubt some members of the staff have been hired and are working because we’ve seen Norton and Adams on the trail. To my knowledge we haven’t seen other coaches with them. Adams will probably be announced soon, his timing was different coming from Cincinnati. I am sure announcing these guys is not a burning priority departmentally / especially for the coaches themselves, but there’s little reason to delay announcing them once they’re officially hired.

So Rabby’s now wrong on the number of coaches too? Man he’s slipping

100%. I get wanting Woody gone, that was so transparently obviously the right move in year 3. Same with Archie.

But this angst over the "slow start," when we've already signed two guys out of the portal, is nuts. I don't know how many times people can point out that Louisville. UK, and Michigan all had roughly the same number of players, or less, at this point last year. But yet people refuse to hear it.

It'll all work out.
