First hire in this new era of portal AND NIL.  DD seems to be organized and have a vision for how he wants his teams to play on both ends of the court.  The next month will be interesting to see how he builds a roster.  This isn't going to be like Woody was in the portal and just go grab the highest ranked players.  There will be a strategic plan with specific skills and traits targeted.

Indiana High School coaches will be drawn to DD and look for in state recruiting over the coming years to improve.  Trent Sisley fits perfectly in DD's system which helps in that area too.

I do think DD is a similar hire to what Kentucky and Louisville pulled in last year and do expect that DD can have a first year at IU like what Pope and Kelsey had this year.

not convinced on that at all

Success is going to be determined by wisely implementing NIL money program to put together a chemical dependent team chemistry that represents all things Indiana mens basketball eliteness and coach it….On and off court.

high school age and transfer portal blend recruitment.

positive university, community involvement and service representation.

Culture and Image….identifiable that is IU men’s basketball in a championship way.

Bring some constructive discipline to the 3 ball game.

I like the hire but I'm not blown away. I think it's a solid hire with lots of upside. Right now I'd probably give it a B. His record at Drake and his one year at WVU give reasons for optimism. His WVU record wasn't that great but he did deal with big injuries and won 10 more games than they won the previous year.

I think there is still growth and learning on his part before he becomes a great coach. He seems to have the defense down based on last year but needs to be able to do that constantly. Offensive efficiency needs to improve. Maybe the resources at IU will help him get the recruits he needs for that to happen. Maybe he needs to bring in an assistant to help. Maybe it's just a learning process.

He's looks better than Woodson and Miller. How much better remains to be seen but I'm optimistic.

I feel like the general indifference about this hire is a good thing.  Mike Davis was polarizing.  People were generally excited about Crean.  Despite what some would say now, there was mostly excitement about Archie.  Woodson was polarizing.  It seems the general sentiment here is meh, lets see how he does.  If he has the grinder work ethic as suggested, then he should be able to have a lot of success at IU.

Love the hire, think it’s just what IU needs. I think we’re in a day in college BB where the big names don’t necessarily carry the weight and swagger they once did in all cases. We’re seeing a turning over of the ranks to a younger generation of coaches, all of whom will make their own big names in front of our eyes.

Surprised and generally unimpressed. Jury is out with a Lot to prove. Like the youth and intensity and will always have hope but it lacks swagger.

Gonna be a prove it year for him. Let’s see what he’s got.

day 2 update.  Similar but much more optimistic.  I wanted the shoe-in to wins.  We didn't get that.  We will need to work for it which is the culture we need cultivate anyway.

My son loves the hire btw and says i'm way too critical.  lol

We just need to work, work, work, work, work just like Rihanna suggested years ago.

Concerned about only winning a share of one regular season MVC and the nature he lost his first round of the tournament games. He made the same mistake each time late in the games. I think if healthy he was potentially 4th in the Big 12 this year. If he's not Pope, Kelsey, Dusty year one or Will Wade good, I'll be a di(k about it.

The negativity here surprises me.  If for no other reason, Scott Dolson has earned a "trust me" and it sounds like this "search" began a long time ago.   He has hit the ground running getting to know Indiana high school coaches; he has ringing endorsements from several coaches we've heard of; he focuses on defense, efficiency, spacing, movement, and shot selection (I'm pretty sure that formula worked here at one time); and he understands he has to recruit to his system.

With resources and support, unless the guy's a fraud and Dolson whiffed it (with his career on the line if he did....which I don't believe for one second), I think he'll be really good at IU.  He wasn't the sexy hire and won't ever win the press conference, but I don't understand the high level of skepticism and doubt.

Yeah.  Bunch of Debbie Downers.  Best hire we have had since Sampson.  College basketball lifer who is a normal guy by all accounts.  Track record of success.  Wants to be here.

With Izzo likely retiring soon, Big10 is going to be dominated by IU/Devries, Michigan/May and Purdue/Painter.   McCullom/Iowa will still be Iowa.   The rest will be the rest.

I understand the skepticism and doubt.

It's Indiana.

Wishing and projecting and hoping and drawing on the walls like we have beautiful minds do not give a clear understanding of what the results will be of this hire.  People are saying that WVa really knows how to hire coaches.  Yeah, they hired Dan Doc Itch for a week...remember?

On the other hand...can DeVries coach?  At Indiana?  Dunno.  Pundits say that he knows his X's and O's.  Pundits say he supports shooting 3's.  Pundits say that he will change the culture.  Projection?

He most likely will not win the Artfully Articulate Award.

Nor will he win the Captivating or Charismatic Comedian Conferral.

He did ok in the Virgin Islands where he did not get kicked out.  He has not been hoisted on a pikestaff by the court of fools for having a non-secure cell phone glued to his ear at the wrong time.  He can coach but will not sit on the playing floor on a stool musing that he does not understand the wins.  He does not swill an unknown liquid endlessly during games and his pants fit.  He does know the difference between a win and a loss and that it matters.  He flattens humps immediately.  And he seems to not lead with his face like a routine melomaniac.  And his assistants do not sleep during games.

He has turned university basketball programs around.  He is a winner.  He is nobody's fool.

Seems to be a fighter and a thinker and a builder...  Seems to be willing to work on the necessary preparations to be a winner.  Others have given awards to him for his performances as a basketball coach.  I have not followed closely his coaching both on and off of the court.

Seems that he will land somewhere between Archie2/Woodson2 and RMK's first 20 years at IU.

Going out on a limb:  Since IU administration and monied alums will support him and in these times of the NIL where $$$$ rules...in 3 years, he will be having IU competing at the top levels in the B1G.  IU will be poised to make deep runs in the NCAAT.  He will find those PG's that are gifted and smart and help the team.  Shooters will be efficient in part because they can hit shots and the team helps. He will surround himself with gifted athletes that also are basketball players, or they will not see the floor.  Defense will be important and set up the offense. Blocking out and rebounding and valuing the ball will come back into vogue.  And he will both hug the Indiana HS coaches and the semi-pro academy pipeline. *

Banner up!

* Wishing and hoping and projection...

I really like this hire. I liked the day it was announced and I like it more now. I believe he will do a great job and take us where we want to go. Maybe not year 1 but we will be back to being Indiana again over time.

This is actually the first hire since Knight was fired that I’ve been excited about. Sampson is a good coach but didn’t want him due to violations. Obviously Davis was over his head. Crean I was skeptical. I didn’t get the Archie love a lot of people had in that search. I was arguing for other candidates throughout the cycle. Woodson nobody wanted. I gave them all a chance but they all proved to not be the guy.

I’m all in.  I actually favored McCollum over him but knew nothing much about either before the search.  The more I’ve looked and heard of DeVries the better.
I just hope he’s at state finals today.   That’s not too much to hope for, right?   Some of the sorriness we saw from the last guy was inexcusable.
