They would presumably all be looking for starter minutes. I seriously doubt the pitch to all of them is commit and compete for one spot. With Rice already committed, some combination of Conwell/Hickman/Carlisle are going to be jockeying for the other spots. Respectfully, would you rather have Hickman starting over Conwell? I am not sure I would rather have him start over Kanaan. I say that more on the assumption we land Ballo. If that happens we aren't starting 3 guards. Unless the money is so good they can't turn it down, all these guys are looking to transfer and start somewhere. I am just conjecturing on if Woody hits a grand slam with the guards and how the minutes would play out. I want Hickman, but not at the expense of landing Conwell. Now if we only land one of them, the entire discussion is moot. I am just spitballing here. I think 100% the bold is true. I have no idea who I prefer to start/whatever else, I would need to see how they all function together, first. OKHOOSIER 1 Quote
Stuhoo Posted April 15, 2024 Posted April 15, 2024 I'm guessing that IU feels like it has three very good guard choices and very much wants any two to pop. Slow playing is not for these three guys. For me? If Hickman pops first, I'd prefer Carlyle as the other guard addition; better defender and better ball-handler than Conwell. Both are outstanding additions. Also, I'm still not convinced that one year of Ballo is a better proposition than two years of Payne. Again, both are great gets. Watched a lot of Minnesota basketball this year and Payne's improvement and motor are so, so good. NVFalcons1990, Blackmon_for_3, IUc2016 and 3 others 6 Quote

He'd also be a good rim protector that will not need post feeds on offense. I've admittedly not watched a lot of Ballo however. NVFalcons1990 1 Quote

With his injury history, I doubt he's a big factor, but I think he's part of the equation. IUc2016 1 Quote
68Hoosier Posted April 15, 2024 Posted April 15, 2024 For our 4 /5 position we currently only have 1 player (unless you consider MM). MR Ballo ? Payne ? Humrichous ? I think we need at least two of the three. I would take any combination so I don't see any issues with getting Ballo and Payne. Quote

Because Grand Canyon is largely an on-line school; over 100,000 attendees with only 550 full-time faculty and a really high acceptance rate (and only 61% freshman to sophomore retention). In other words, it's a university that is driven by a profit model. That model doesn't necessarily equate to big-time donors that can fund NIL - it's the university that has the big profits. But still, one would think they will find a way. I would say that is exactly why they would they would have so much NIL money. It is a cash cow for some pretty wealthy investors and having a nice NIL fund and good basketball team is cheap advertising. Don't think of alumni or donors so much with them but rather investors. Stuhoo Posted April 15, 2024 Posted April 15, 2024 There is naturally going to be a bias toward the players that are geographically easier to watch. All of these are really good options, but Conwell at ISU and Payne via the B1G Network are far more accessible to be seen. I'm curious what @Uspshoosier thinks about the Carlyle/Hickman/Conwell best fit and the Ballo/Payne option. He's the one above all others that has a handle on every corner of the sport. Quote

Some systems would justify 7 guards. What Woody’s doing with Mgbako on the wing and Tucker getting wing minutes doesn’t. The numbers really don’t work at all unless you push Cupps all the way out of the rotation with Galloway as the backup PG and other perimeter and you commit to staggering Ballo and Reneau and going small about half the time. Then you could probably guarantee a 2nd guy 20min and a big payday. That’s really stretching it, though. It also means you have 0 min to offer to a backup big. Quote
