I really question the NIL numbers sometimes.  There is a reason for those to be publically inflated on both sides.

It’s funny to watch college fans freak out about all the fake numbers agents float. Been a thing in the pros forever but you eventually learn the real numbers. In college you don’t do so people just go on believing whatever rumor agents float to the media. Most of the media are happy to do it to because that’s how they get “breaking news.”

I do think DeVries needs to make a splash somehow someway.  Land a player that is pure boxoffice like a Zeller, Gordon, Romeo, TJD, etc.  The fans didn't like this hire and year 1 was pretty bad.  Will be hard to get fan buy in without a guy like that.  He could just win but that may be difficult with fan apathy and a half empty AH.

And that's part of a bigger problem. Who else were the fans expecting to get?

Yeah, to be clear, I am not frustrated money wise.  I am just saying that no matter what, you have a set supply of NIL funds for any given year that you have to parse out.  Indiana was going huge on basketball with Woodson, it didn't pay off.  Cignetti comes along and wins a National Title. He is going to command more NIL at a traditional basketball school than you will see at those other institutions (like Kentucky, Duke, and Kansas) and that will mean that Indiana dumping supposedly $20 million into a basketball roster is not going to happen.  The money will chase success right now.

Oh, I agree with you.  My post was piggybacking off the point you made -- I think we're doing a pretty good job with MBB NIL given what's going on with FB and MBB's struggles.

I didn't make it clear.  My bad.

Of the realistic hires...Beard, McCollum, and Schertz.  Those were the 3 names most people would've been okay with and I scour all the message boards and Twitter.  Obviously Stevens, Otz, Lloyd, etc would've all been grand slams but obviously were never happening.  That's been the problem for 26 years.  The administration refuses to give the fans what they want.  And we are what matters.

Just an inkling, no inside info whatsoever, just based off of online chatter, but I feel like we’re going to get the two ND players and Fru. Wouldn’t be a terrible start.

In terms of upgrading the talent no not a terrible start, but need athleticism and shooters at 3-4 more spots with a good chunk of your NIL spent.

For different reasons, I'm not convinced any of these 3 were realistic candidates. And I don't think fans "didn't like" the DeVries hire. I think most people didn't know anything about him yet but were pretty satisfied with pulling a P5 coach.

That would be three of what will end being top 100 players in the portal. Too much gloom for me to say I'd be surprised if we do that well on P4 players?

Beard was a zero take. McCollum wasn't interested. I could have gotten on board with Schertz although DeVries has owned Schertz head to head. And I don't really recall that many people pining for Schertz after going 19-15 the year prior.

Would be a great start.  Would need to add a couple knockdown shooters around them for sure.  But would immediately be a big talent upgrade.

Some will be immediately disappointed with the roster we assemble.

Some will wait to see how that roster performs.

Yes, sure.  But it’s not a yes or no.  It’s a scale. And it’s somewhat measurable via analytics.

Everyone will wait and see how it performs.

But the rest of the college basketball world and the fans will analyze the roster put together and project how good or bad it is.

That would be an incredible start if the coaching and fit is right. Round out with a stretch 4 and combo guard and you have a tourney team knocking on the s16

No. He needs to make a splash by winning lots of basketball games, including high-profile games. Woody made a splash with box office recruits and portal gets, and the fan base didn't give a **** because it didn't enable winning.

Get a bunch of no-names and curb stomp Kentucky on national tv this fall and all will be well in a big hurry.

You really think DeVries is capable of that based on what you’ve seen from him?  He needs talent, just like most coaches. Doesn’t have to be blockbuster names but generally the best players generate names for themselves.

That’d be quite the haul. Would be shocked to get all three

I’m sure that’s a consistent worry of most. Fingers crossed

I think DeVries can coach. I also think it's extremely hard to win consistently in the B10 without adequate size or talent. Both things can be true. Let's see what next years team is capable of before closing the roof on DeVries ceiling after a single year.
