Unexpectedflash Posted April 29, 2025 Posted April 29, 2025 Looks like we’ll switch everything on defense and I assume have a lot of on ball pressure. Obviously you’d like a rim protector but not having one isn’t the end all be all if the perimeter defenders hold their own. A post up is the least efficient play in basketball. On the plus side I would be shocked if we don’t have a top 20 offense. We may force teams to play smaller to matchup with us CSP, jonz44, Juwan Moye and 1 other 4 Quote

But then again, I haven’t paid as much attention to the portal as some of you guys. Fast-paced, guard-centric offense with an emphasis on shooting the ball. Defensively still unsure. He plays a version of the pack line but I’ve not dug into that too much. thebigweave 1 Quote

HoosierInParadise Posted April 29, 2025 Posted April 29, 2025 Saw that, can’t convince me we don’t get another big somehow I don't disagree....however, even if everyone on the team next year was 6 foot or shorter, we'd still watch better coached basketball than the last 8 years... Was not much if any switching. They play a classic Packline. Extended more. They play gaps off the ball. Tag and trail on the guards/wings. They do go under screens at the key some depending on scouting(imho). They hard hedge some. I could be wrong but I’m going to bet they won’t switch much. str8baller, J34 and Juwan Moye 3 Quote

Juwan Moye Posted April 29, 2025 Posted April 29, 2025 You can get the DVD to learn the pack line from DeVries, sounds like a fun weekend: https://www.championshipproductions.com/cgi-bin/champ/p/Basketball/Open-Practice-Building-the-Pack-Line-Defense-from-the-Ground-Up_BD-05617A.html Victor 1 Quote

He plays a version of the pack line but I’ve not dug into that too much. If I only looked at the offensive personnel I might think that too. Two problems with this idea of a fast paced, gunning team a la Alabama or UK last year: 1) To play the style of defense he seems to want to play, a super fast pace isn’t ideal. To play packline and protect the rim by stopping dribble penetration, you’ll generally want to get back and get set up and then let the shot clock be your friend. Last year at WVU they were super slow at 331 in tempo, which brings me to point #2… 2) Just looking at his teams historically they’ve been pretty middle of the pack in pace. I’d almost call them pace nuetral. Last year they were really slow and his first year at Drake they were just inside the top 100 in pace. None of this is meant to be critical of CDD. I’m just saying, I’m curious what he does. If he does what he did last year, it’ll be the polar opposite of what everyone here expects. And if he does what everyone here is saying they expect it’ll be a pre big departure from what he’s generally done. Juwan Moye 1 Quote

I’ve seen some switching on some of his teams a while back, we’ll see how much roster construction plays into the defensive schemes Quote

In my opinion it doesn't make sense to build a team with a bunch of big wings that would be good at switching and then do no switching but who knows Im not the coach Quote

IMO, Banks (and to a much lesser degree, Gunn) hardly had a fair chance here. Banks was on a very short leash and was raw, but showed plenty of flashes. Tulane got a lot out of him this year. He just needed the opportunity to play long enough to get into a good flow for the game IMO. Like if Crean only ever played OG for 5 mins a game. Gunn played more and was frustrating at times but also had untapped potential, as evidenced by his season at DePaul. Curious to see how Banks does in the Big East. They’ve clearly bonded over their negative experiences with Woody lol. Banksyrules 1 Quote

Gonna start a pg and then Tucker and Bailey at the 4/5. If Coneroy is the pg, he seems pretty switchable, but you can’t let Bailey and Tucker get switched onto bad matchups on the perimeter and killed in space. Remember when teams started doing that to Goode last year? With that said, it looks like if CDD were so inclined he could have a few subs come in and have a lineup that switches everything. thebigweave and Home Jersey 2 Quote
