They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread

I'll agree with that, May is not a sure thing. Almost nobody is.

Pearl got his first major job at Tennessee, at age 45, after 4 years as a small school D-1 head coach. Dusty is 47, and has been a small school D-1 coach for 6 years now. Pearl coached D-II before that, while Dusty was a high major assistant - both are valid ways of working up the ladder.

If IU can nab an established coaching star, great. But we haven't been able to do that the last two times around. I would be happy if we end up with May, certainly happier than continuing on with Woodson.

I grew up near Evansville and attended Pearl's camps as a kid.  Met him at least a handful of times.  You could tell right then and there in the mid 90s the dude just had "it".  Literally everyone around loved the guy.  Lives and breaths basketball and is full of positive energy.  Would absolutely win big here.  Best coach in the B1G on day one.  That's exactly why the BOT will likely block it.  "No one bigger than the program ever again".  The egos on these people is off the charts.

I don’t really follow how they would think that. You don’t talk about the IU basketball program the way Young Brucie has his entire career and also think you’re bigger than the program. Everything he’s said about the program has been in the context of how much he respects and admires the program. Everything about his personality says he can handle that spotlight too. If they see that as being bigger than the program, they’re just way off base.

Assume you're Scott Dolson making the decision on whether Mike Woodson is getting a year 4.  What's the most concerning issue?  Won/loss record this year and underperforming last 2 year based on the talent on the roster? Style of play? Roster construction? Lack of recruiting foundation and no in-state recruiting? Offseason player departures tied to his return?

For me, all that aside, it’s future outlook and recruiting. So I suppose you could file me under roster construction. If we hand landed Boogie, Queen and McNeeley, this entire thread would not exist regardless of the product on the court this year. CMW would 1000% be coming back if we had a top 5 recruiting class with all top-25 recruits. We could overlook the other warts. Instead, we didn’t, and that magnifies them.

He'd be the most popular coach the entire state of Indiana has had since the year 2000.  They don't want that.  I've heard those words I used too many times over the years from people very close to the program.  I'll believe when I see it.  I do think Dolson wants Pearl.  I think the BOT blocks him.  We'll see.

I’m not advocating for Collins but some of you are selling him short. NW is a difficult job.

—In their 120 yr history they’ve been to the tourney 2 times. Both under Collins.

—Carmody was a heckuva coach, never made the tourney, did have them ranked once…

—to that end, NW’s been ranked 9x in 100+ years. Collins has 5 of those teams

He’s a pretty good coach at an impossible job

Collins has been in the Big Ten for 11 years and has finished higher than 10th 3 times. Has 3 NCAA tourneys including this year.

For reference, in 7 years, Tim Miles at Nebraska finished higher than 10th in Big Ten 2 times and made one NCAA….and got fired.

A salesman came into work yesterday and gave me a cigar. Said it’s a Cuban so save it for a special occasion. It’s in my humidor right now. Hopefully it won’t be in there long.

Hello all,
I did not think I would end up in here but wanted to relay information.
1. No decision has been made. Decision will be made next week.
2. As of now I know of 4 votes who want Mike woodson replaced. And 2 votes who want him to stay. I do not know the other votes.
3. There is a lot of respect on BoT and the BoT will not personally attack each other. If news gets out that it does then it is fake.
4. At the end of the day we are all one family and let's support whoever is the coach next year.

Thanks
- IT
So assuming this is all legit wouldn't there only need to be one more vote to replace? I assume QB's vote is only used in stalemate situation, right? If you have 4 then one more seals it at 5-3 if I'm understanding correctly.

How many of the BOT members were around when Knight was fired? Earlier today, I think somebody posted each board member and how long they've been on the board, but that was probably about 40-50 pages ago.

I think the post was the name and when they come off, not when they got on.

My completely uninformed opinion of whatever meeting they have next week and its theme is going to be the administration encouraging Woody to bow out gracefully and to make him understand how incredibly toxic the job will be for him if they are not immediately improved and winning games. Reading all the tea leaves my guess is they try to talk him out of it, but aren’t willing to fire before a 4th year. Hope I’m wrong but who knows.

Definitely plausible...

None.

Buckner was appointed in 2016.

Spears was appointed in 2018.

All of the others were appointed Ted between 2021 and 2023.

If IU decides to keep Woodson, I offer free services for the press release.
Mike Woodson will be the coach at IU next year. He is the right man for the job. We will be making some minor changes.
1) We will hire an assistant who knows the college game to help with game plan, adjustments and player development. Because it’s one area where Mike needs help.
2) We will hire someone to help with high school recruiting. Developing relationships with coaches and players. Again, not one of Mike’s strong suits.
3) We will hire someone to navigate the portal and NIL. It’s an area where Mike needs assistance.
In all other facets of the game, Mike is on point. We are looking forward to a great 2024-2025 season.
The smartest man in the room doesn't want any help. That's part of the issue

The culture is the same.  It's why certain coaches can never be hired despite most other schools having no issues hiring them.  They still don't get it.

Let the handwringing begin.

While that would suck, it doesn’t move the needle for me the way a B1G team does. And WVU is not a school that scares me if he’s good and we want him. Dusty pummeling us at say Ohio Statr or Michigan is my nightmare.

For those more clued in than I....if Dusty is the guy, are there any elite defensive scheme assistants out there with excellent Indiana recruiting connections? Guessing no, but pairing him with a guy like that would increase the odds of success.
