I unfortunately stayed up and watched every miserable minute, and it totally was not worth it!

I couldn't, I had to be at the office at 6:30 this morning and I wasn't in the mood for punishment.

Should we expect a visit from Cathy today telling us to trust the process?

Nothing is officially starting for 4.5 more weeks!  There will be no kneejerking amongst the stakeholders after one bad result, or two, or three, or losing six of the last seven…

It's more than drinking, but if he has a drinking problem a fishbowl like job like IU is probably not a good idea.

Yep. He’s a small-timey backwoods yokel just like Sampson. Put them both at Bobo’s clown college in the middle of nowhere and they’ll have those boys playing ball as well as anyone. And given the lack of media, expectations, and basketball alumni functions at places like Lubbock nobody really will bat an eye at your overtly abrasive personality or if you get fall down drunk and miss a practice on a Tuesday.

Put them at IU—or Texas, apparently—and the pressures of the job increase exponentially. Beard would probably crack as fast as Sampson. But even if he did manage to scratch out a conf title or FF before it went down in flames, it’s all gonna end the same way. IU would have to put so many safeguards on the hire, it might even affect his coaching ability meaning the whole thing fails to launch from the start.

I really hope last night sparked some type of retirement announcement before Saturday, or an early dismissal. Cant stand this guy. I got to the point of laughing out loud last night when we got down 26-4, and my oldest daughter came out of her room to ask me what was so funny. I pointed at the tv, and she said “oh..yikes.” I wanted Wisconsin to just keep pouring it on, and that’s so freakin sad.

Feinstein may have touched on it now that I think about it.  I first learned about it second hand from a friend of Knight who got a call informing him that he was responsible for raising $100,000 for the Landon Turner Trust Fund.  That was a tidy sum in 1981 – about half the amount Coach Knight was paid by Indiana University in salary that year.

Talk about inflation!  Forty-five years ago $200,000 could get you an NCAA championship.  These days just an invitation to the NIT will run you more than 20 times that much (if you can get boosters to kick in for the NIL).  I suppose coaching in the NIT would cost you extra.

That was Knight’s salary from the university for coaching.  Keep in mind, though, back then all of his “outside income” from his media appearances, coach’s shows (TV and radio), and even the shoe contract, went directly to him instead of being funneled through the university in his contract.  So, he made a lot more than that.  And to his credit, he was pretty generous with it in helping and doing things for others.

Leaving in starters and watching them press and play defense against Wisconsin walk-ons to try and close the gap tells you everything about the sorry state of our program. We’ve made jokes about garbage time Leal, but I think last night was the first time I’ve noticed a clear, concerted effort to try and limit the negative optics in that fashion. I rewatched it and Gard emptied his bench at 1:17. Five of his players logged 1 minute played. It was clear in the huddle they looked around and said to each other “we have to close this gap and not lose by 15 again.”

This was not “playing to the final whistle”  this was different. This was desperation.

We scored 6 points in the last 70 seconds. And 5 of those in the last :22. We’ve had a lot of embarrassing moments over the Mike Woodson experience, but watching that was rock bottom for me as a fan.

Anyways, sorry for the rant, that just really irked me.

TL;DR: We suck. Fire Mike Woodson.

"I did my job, we just ran out of time". Probably.

The players are very obviously in their own heads and feeling the pressure of a frustrated fanbase and clueless coaching staff. I get no player wants to have their coach fired mid-season, embarrassing for them, probably would feel like they’re responsible for it … but that’s really what would be best for everyone at this point, probably. I’ll never understand for the life of me why we decided to bring him back for this year. This was inevitable the moment they retained him.

Agree. The only legitimate reason I’ve seen for not firing him now is putting pressure on coaches we would be looking at. But that’s just part of being a sought after coach. The downside to keeping him is much higher. If the game gets ugly Saturday and the fans start to chant Dusty’s name, it’s not the fan’s fault. It’s 100% on IU.

I think you mentioned it in the game thread, but this was another one where I really felt so bad for the players. Clear from the jump we didn’t formulate a gameplan to limit what Wisco does well, and you could see in their faces and they knew it. This game was over before it started.
