They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread

I think the roster has good individual talent but when put together as a team the pieces don’t fit. And that roster construction is the reason the team struggles. Woodson is a NBA guy and will play his individual talent. Notice when Reneau was on the bench the floor spacing was better and Ware was stellar. Guys made 3’s as well but our starting SG went 0-4. The game is a blowout with a SG that can shoot better and a PG upgrade.

With or without Woody next year  the roster construction needs fixed. Even if it means playing small ball for 1 season. Not ideal to play small but it would work well on offense and be a tourney team.
PG - Portal (athletic/be able to shoot)

SG - Portal (athletic/be able to shoot)

Wing/SF - McNeeley

Wing/PF - Mgbako

C - Reneau (or get a Portal shot blocker)

It's very possible that if Woodson is kept McNeely might be the only guy that could start. It will be interesting if he is kept if Reneau who wasn't happy after fouling out last night or Mgbako would return.

More than anything it's not going to be if IU wins any more games or not. It will be about if Dolson can get a proven coach locked up. If he does that then it doesn't matter if we win out.

And if he can't and Woody is brought back it will absolutely kill any recruiting.

Good. Well then at least he’s trying to find someone else regardless of the outcome of the rest of the season and not waiting to see how many wins we happen to pull off and basing it off that.

I guess here's the question for the board if you're Scott Dolson.  You've tried to land a whale such as Pearl or Oats.  Came close but both said no.  You're choice is to hire a Dusty May or Chris Collins or bring back Woody.  If you bring back Woody next season is almost guaranteed to resemble Crean's first 3 years and the 2025 recruiting class is gone.  What do you do?

Well didn’t Mgbako just talk to the staff like 2 weeks ago about returning next year? I just think the front court has talent and our guards are lacking and have been for a long time. Any coach we hire is going to struggle until the guard talent is upgraded. It’s a guards game and we are currently playing the inverse and have since Archie.

edit: I also think Malik is a undersized 5 for the modern game. I want to get away from the 2 big lineup badly. So if Reneau wants to leave, bye. Need to get high quality guards and build around that. Not what we’ve been doing since Crean was fired.

For all you “Woody needs to go” guys - this doesn’t change a damn thing. Calm the heck down. You may still get your wish or may not but this doesn’t change it.

The real question you should be asking is why did they play so much harder? Why when so many have said he has “lost the locker room”

If there was a deeper look and understanding of team psychology you might see it. If you have played at a high level, you might. If your extent of bb knowledge is watching and understanding analytics you might not.

Feel free to answer that honestly. I promise you no matter how it may seem as a positive for Woody, your reply won’t be used in court when deciding Woody’s fate.

Where'd you play?

First this my opinion and only an opinion.

I truly hope there is a change at the end of the year and we get a new coach.  If it doesn't happen then I will be here next November rooting on my team and hoping for a great season. For me I couldn't leave the team when it is going bad and then come back when we started winning. I would feel like I don't deserve to say I am a fan if I only follow them in the good times.

I am still in the belief that Woodson will be back next year but it has nothing to do with how we finish the year.  I don't think last night effected the outcome one way or the other.

If Mgbako did then that is news to me. I heard he was fielding offers from other programs like Kansas or going pro. But yes, we need guards and more guards

If Reneau is our 5, we are going to be a horrible defensive team next year.  Malik is a very good low post scorer, but he is not a good defender and not a rim protector.  imo, Reneau needs to be teamed with a stretch 5 and that person needs to be a rim protector.

Ware was a monster last night, he brought and left everything on the floor. We don’t win without that effort, but I do think X being back wad part of it. He’s there engaged and bringing his own energy and some leadership, and Bako’s 14 came with 30 plus minutes and a couple good 3’s on good shooting. It was a team effort, it was a fun game and good to see the team fighting hard again.

X had 5 turnovers in 15 minutes, and was -12.

We're not real good with him as the 4. He's been in foul trouble most of the time. When he has had his best games Ware has been in foul trouble or hurt. When you put Reneau with a 5 it's two bigs out there again clogging things up again.

What I do is no surprise to anyone I hire Dusty and start working the class of 25 and fielding a team for next year from day 1. Implementing a new offense and start working on our shooting.

Yep, me too. Give me Dusty May with IU’s resources at his disposal over what we are seeing out of Woodson. Dusty could get McNeeley to stay on board and get the ‘25 guys who are in wait and see mode to commit already. Sisley doesn’t want to play in Woodson’s system and i don’t wanna see him drop 30 on us at Purdue.

I guess my question would be, would Dolson consider Dusty as one of those “proven coaches” to lock up and move on with?

Hopefully we don't have to find out but we'll see

I think the booster/NIL variable needs to be considered. If I choose to move on from Woody, will they support the new coach substantially to fixed a flawed roster. Adding both high school talent in the 25 class and portal players to keep the roster experienced. If they will then move on to May or Collins. Probably May but he must hire one defensive specialist as an assistant.

Im also hiring a GM. One who overseeing roster construction with the HC and helps coordinate with NIL. You are starting to see this in football at the football powers. Michigan just got a guy from the Bears to do this for them. The players are now getting paid it’s a professional endeavor. Time to have the structure in place to treat your main program as such.

Hot take: we may be better off in the long run without Malik. He really only works playing beside another big because he can’t rim protect or rebound at an efficient rate, but he is truly only effective offensively on the low block. He doesn’t fit in a true 4 or 5 out offense.

Read on another board then. Definitely didn’t make it up. lol if he wants to go then bye. Can’t keep players just to keep them. Have to have the right culture in place.
